“Fairies!” Red shouts.
“I’m not risking my life chasing a half breed with fairies around!” he shouts over his shoulder at his mate that made it out with him.
Lucille’s POV
In the distance there is a scream, then a gunshot! Could that be because of Thomas or the rogues?
“Boys! Faster!” We run and find the hollowed-out tree and scents going to the river.
“Thomas is smart. He used this on Xavier. He would have crossed the river.” Brian says and I nod.
They swim and I jump. I don’t want to get wet. I have been keeping to the shade to keep out of direct sunlight and found that I can move that way during the day.
Picking up all the different scents again we follow them.
Thomas’ POV
Who was that? Why did they shoot? You are a dumb i***t! They saw a wolf jumping one of their own!!
No wonder they tried shooting you. But I was just trying to protect her from the rogues, but they wouldn’t know that. She took a hard knock; I really hope she’s okay. She is definitely not human!
Did you see that pair of wings on that girl! Do they know? Are they fairies? The town looked pretty normal, humany… Did she change in time before they saw her wings?!
I turn back on my tracks to make sure nobody is following me. Those rogues were intent on finding me or maybe even attacking the town. I can’t live with myself if that is their plan. Okay, I don’t have a gun…
Pacing up and down I debate whether I should go back or not when a growl and red eyes behind me tells me to run. Damn rogues! I made a rookie mistake and didn’t check the damn wind direction! Now they found me and I am heading back in the direction of the town with them hot on my heels.
Charlie’s POV
I wake up in a hospital bed with a drip in my arm, bandages around my head, my ribs, machines beeping, and some smaller scrapes. Pulling the drip out of my arm, I feel around the bandage on my head making sure there is no hair missing and no bleeding.
The doctors here can be so melodramatic! Sitting up straight I want to cry out in pain but bite the bullet. Okay so my ribs are broken, that one they got right. Looking around for my clothes, I find the remnants of material in the biohazard bin…
Like I said… Melodramatic…
I grab the bandage around my head, turn the hospital gown around and fashion it into a type of dress, using the bandage. I’m not staying here. They will find something to fix and I will have to stay for the next month and end up with an astronomical bill that I will have to pay for the next thirty years.
I find a piece of paper, grab the pen from the patient file, write an “I.owe.U” note and make my way out of the hospital back to my flat as quickly as possible. Once there I get dressed. Not with ease, I must say
“Don’t even think about it!” I look at my skates.
If I want the pain in my ribs to completely kill me… I would go out skating to work now. I know I own a pair of shoes and that they are somewhere in here, somewhere. I look around me at the mess of a flat that I live in. I honestly can’t remember when last I saw that pair of shoes.
They should stand out. They are boots… which ended getting me hooked on skates.
“Do you think they could have disappeared underneath layers of clothing,” I ask myself and then look towards my cupboard.
“There you are boots!!!” I start to walk fast and my ribs remind me I’m injured.
How am I going to keep up with the pace at work? I need to go and show them I’m fine or they are going to take me back to the hospital! I have to! Putting on the boots I take a deep breath and face the stairs.
Lucille’s POV
Hot on the scent of the rogues we reach a fork in the scents. This must have been where all the noise came from, smelling the gun powder.
“Check for Thomas’ scent!” I hope they didn’t shoot him!
We find a pool of blood but the smell is that of a rogue and pick up on Thomas’ scent. The rogues going in a different direction and the magic scent in another. He got away safely. Thank the goddess. Now we just have to find him. We pick up our speed again following his scent. We are getting closer.
Thomas’ POV
The bigger rogue is nipping at my back paws and I try to pick up more speed but I am pushing it to my best. I should have trained better! Selena’s blood is also working out of my system which means that I am growing weaker than a normal werewolf would be.
With each step, I grow weaker and start breathing harder. The town comes into view and the rogue slows down for a second or two, then comes right back to chasing me. Seems he decided I am worth the chase.
Running into an alleyway when I reach the town, I shift quickly putting on the clothes I took before. Hearing him howl, I don’t move. Trying to calm my breathing. I sneak through the dark passages and alleys until I see her. She is hurt by the way she is walking and the blood I can smell. How can they let her walk around like this?
I hear a howl of a wolf then silence. The humans must have caught the rogues. Watching her walk into a bar. How can she be walking into a bar this time of the day? How can she be walking into a bar at all? She is way too young for such things!
My attention still on the smells in the town, I find nothing and decide it can only be human. I don’t smell anything else. Taking the chance, I walk around the corner and into the bar. Keeping to the darker parts at first, I watch the people talking and laughing. She is working behind the bar, trying her best to hide her pain, but failing miserably.
Lucille’s POV
We find Thomas’ scent, but it is mixed with the rogues again. This time going in the same direction, back to where they were before. None of this makes any sense.
“Brian? David? You guys trained with him.”
“There has to be a reason for him to be running around like this Lucille, he wouldn’t be doing this without it.”
I nod and we once again follow the scents when not far from the original mix of the lot, we run into the rogues. We have run in a circle without explanation and found the rogues at the end of it. No Thomas, a town of magic and rogues!
The guys growling, I’m hissing and the two rogues red eyes are burning with hatred. We circle each other looking for weaknesses, when I jump the red-furred bigger wolf, grabbing him at the back of his neck and slamming him on the ground.
He howls making the birds fly in every direction. Brian and David not wanting me to make them look like sissies, follow suit and soon the two wolves are dead. But the fight could have drawn unwanted attention.
We remove the bodies and as much evidence as possible.
Charlie’s POV
Sneaking through the back entrance, past Billy who is busy talking to the cook and safely behind the bar, I start taking orders. Billy pops his head around the door.
“Where the hell did you come from?”
“Nowhere. I’ve been here the entire time.” I reply as if he has gone mad.
“You are supposed to be in hospital…”
“No, I’m not! Why would I be there?” I hand the order over to the customer, flinching when I make the p*****t, trying to hide my face from Billy.
“Because of that.” He points his finger at me.
“What? I have no idea what you are talking about the old man.”
There is a howl not far from town in the forest making all the men jump and run.
“You little miss, stay here this time!!” Billy says.
I hear the door locking at the back. Looking around for my keys I remember I left them at home before going on my excursion, afraid I might lose them… Great. Well, I wasn’t planning on going anywhere in any case.
Not even to save the lone wolf. Yes, he saved my life, but damn, I was having a hard time breathing thanks to him. Walking over to the front door to lock it I find a man standing in the dark corner.
He frightens the s**t out of me and I scream… to no avail… every single man has left to hunt the lone wolf! Well every man except for this stranger, wait… stranger.
“Are you the lone wolf?” Asking him holding out my arm slightly.
“No, my name is Thomas.”
“Oh, what are you doing here while the men are all out hunting wolves?”
“I don’t believe in killing wolves.” The man… I mean Thomas says.
“Are you a serial killer?” I whisper wide-eyed.
“Why would you ask me that?” he replies sounding offended.
“Dark corner? Alone…”
“Oh, okay well it does make sense. No, I’m not, but I guess any killer would say such a thing. May I know your name then? They say if you personalize yourself a killer won’t see you as a target anymore…” he says.
I did read that somewhere.
“I’m Charlie, nice to meet you, Thomas. Can I interest you in a drink?” Looking at him, he clearly hasn’t got any money on him, wearing Rufus’ shirt and signature black jeans.
“On the house.”
Thomas’ POV
She is kind and kind of cute, and it seems not suspecting a thing, except for calling me the lone wolf… that was a bit suspect.
“A drink will be much appreciated.”
“Where are you from?” I didn’t think about that! i***t! Of course, people would be asking such questions!
“A small town west of here. My parents both passed away and now I’m doing the wanderer thing.” I smile at her hoping it is enough to answer her question.
There is no time when the front door is unlocked and a bunch of men walk in talking loudly about wolves invading their territory and fighting as if they were on their own. A lady walks into the bar and everyone goes silent. She is dressed in a powder pink pants suit. Her blond hair pulled into a tight bun at the back of her head. A string of pearls decorating her neck and one on each ear. A pair of pink pumps on her small feet.
“Donella” the girl whispers, looking over at me. The woman walks our way looking straight at me. Her walk is confident as her hips sway from one side to the other. Coming to a standstill right next to me, she turns around while more people push into the bar and it fills up completely.
Donella’s POV
“Early this morning it came to my attention that there is a wolf in my territory. The hunters went out along with me and we found not one but four. Miss Charlie here behind the bar thought she was tough enough to take them on herself by using dust. You all know dust is not allowed unless you have the right paperwork and permission from the council. She will be receiving her punishment summons soon.
But that is beside the point. She was injured when one of the wolves attacked her. Billy shot one of them but three got away. Later this afternoon we found remnants that two more were killed by it seems two more running with a vampire… Charlie, give me some water, please. This is a lot to go through.”
Taking a sip of water, I continue.
“The most interesting part of this entire situation? This thing sitting here next to me is the last wolf we were hunting.”
