“A double milk chocolate cake, a large frappuccino and a cookie, please. “
Miley smiles widely at the waiter, who is still watching her stunned because of the amount of sweet stuff my best friend has just ordered only for herself. After the exam we decided to go grab a coffee in the closest cafeteria and it looks like Miley is trying to feed herself, her wolf and an animal she has devoured and is living inside her.
“Just a black coffee for me.”
I say as the waiter glances at me to take my order.
“Thanks, Jake. “
I smile at him and he disappears todards the bar. I know his name because everyone knows everyone here. There are no new people coming to live here and I feel like there are no people leaving the place.
We’re frozen in time, that’s what’s happening here. I glance out of the window to see the leaves have begun turning yellow-ish.
Autumn is here, but the exams start earlier if you want to apply where me and Miley are applying.
“I can’t believe it’s almost over,” I say, still looking out.
It’s the early afternoon and the streets are almost empty. The air smells like chill and pinecones, and you can feel that winter will soon be here.
In the mountains, that’s earlier than elsewhere.
It’s almost everyone’s favorite time of the year.
I’ve always hated autumn.
“And I can't believe we graduate. “
I say, realizing I am frowning at something invisible even to me. “And the exam wasn’t that difficult, right?”
Actually, it was a shitty one, and I’ve most likely failed, but I am trying my best to sound positive.
“Mhm.”
Miley mutters and I glance in her direction to see she's scrolling blindly on her social media.
I can tell she is still nervous about the exam, so I guess I need to try to distract her harder. We’re getting the results in months, anyway. There’s no point for her to be sulking about something if it's too late to change it.
“How’s Kyle?”
I ask, realizing she’s probably waiting for this guy she likes to call.
“Kyle?”
She asks distractedly and looks up from the screen.
“Yeah, “ I shrug, “Like, how are things going with him?”
Miley snorts and the waiter brings our drinks.
“Enjoy it, girls, “ he smiles as he places the glasses and once he’s done serving and disappears, Miley takes a large bite of her cake and says between chews.
“We don’t hang out anymore. “
“No, why?”
“You know, he’s just…”
“What?”
I lean forward, serious as she doesn’t finish her sentence.
“Has he done something?” I almost growl, “I swear if he’s done something to you I’ll find him and rip him to pieces. I’ll turn him into meat bites to feed the stray dogs, and even his own skinny beta- ass wolf won’t be able to…”
“No, no…” Miley protests, “He hasn’t done anything.”
I exhale slowly, still planning to rip him to pieces in my head.
“Then?”
Milay shrugs.
“He’s just…one of the guys here. “
“And?”
I ask, realizing I’ve leaned even further above the table and part of my hair is probably sinking in my coffee cup.
I ignore the suspicion and ask again.
“So?”
“So..he’s just someone I have known for years, and he…he is like my brother, not my boyfriend. “
“Oh…That. Right.”
I say, realizing what she says and lean back.
“Yeah. Well, the thing is here, with this shitty small town it’s always like this. “ I take a sip of my coffee. It sucks, but it’s better than the one I can make, so it works. “We have all basically grown up together. “
“My mom and dad too, but they are each other’s mates and have always been together. “
Miley offers.
“Yeah, well, your parents are a super exception. “
I mean, people don’t really leave the town, but few are happier than Miley’s parents.
“Why can’t guys be like…” My friend still has her phone in her hand and her eyes land on something. “Like those guys here, for example. “
She shows me the display and there’s a picture- it's probably some kind of an advertisement of the Lunar Crest Academy and I frown, looking at what looks like the face of the chart, called “the top ten guys to avoid in college” .
“Yeah, what about it?” I lift an eyebrow.
“Well. look at them. They are all so…so perfect.”
She sounds dreamy and I can’t help but smile. She’s always wanted to study there, ever since we were small pups.
“The students there?”
I laugh, “ Yeah, no kidding. Of course they are. I mean, come on. “
“What?”
She looks puzzled, still not getting my point.
“Well, if my dad was filthy rich, and we studied in this fancy school we’d look this cool too.”
Miley laughs.
“It’s not just that, they are just…more than anyone else.”
I roll my eyes and she shows me another picture of them.
“Just look at them.”
The picture shows their latest tournament and below it, there’s an interview with the captain of one of their teams.
“His name’s Asher, “ Miley explains once she notices I am on the verge of groaning.
Then I realize she’s not showing me pictures of brochures, advertising the school- not that they need to advertise it, but my best friend actually has pictures of this… whoever those are on her phone. As in, downloaded.
“Are you stalking him?”
I ask, realization hitting me, and Miley blushes.
