CHAPTER 7: MOVE

2701 Words
Here she was, standing at the door of the man who has saved her, ready to knock on his door, if he was going to allow her in. Amber felt as if she had been knocking for what seemed like an entire life time rather than just a few minuets that she had been standing there. She was here now and determined not to give up; even if it meant that she’ll have to beg Nick to let her stay. She swallowed the lump in throat and gathered the strength and all the will power in her body. Amber heard the footsteps walking to door and a click of the door opening sounded. The door was opened and she looked right into the hazel eyes of the man that saved her and she burst out crying, she placed her hand over her mouth to control her uncontrollable sobbing. Her legs gave in and just as she was about to collapse Nick caught her in his arms. “Amber what is wrong? You know what never mind, come in?” Nick asked her. He helped her into his home and just as he looked over his shoulder, he saw her suitcase. What is Amber doing here with her suitcase? Could Tate have thrown her out? No. A million thoughts went through his mind at that moment, but he chose to focus on Amber before everything else. He sat Amber down on his couch, in the living room and he rushed to get her suitcases and bring them in. Nick could not explain it but something in his guts had told him that something was seriously wrong with this entire situation. Nick walked into the living area, quite making sure that he did not disturb Amber, but she looked up from her palms. Her eyes were puffy and red, something wrong had happened to break such a strong woman like herself. He walked around his coffee table and sat on it, he looked deep into her eyes, something he regretted doing, because he felt like she was staring deep into his soul. Nick felt heavy and ready to attack anyone that had hurt Amber, the blood in his veins felt like it was boiling, and Nick was ready to attack anyone that had broken her heart. “Amber who did this to you, please tell me?” Nick asked Amber, trying his best to keep his cool but his tone failing him. “Y—You did” Amber whispered at him, that was enough to make Nick almost fall off the table. He did not understand how it was that he had upset her.  Thousand thoughts swarmed his head, could it be because he had spilled her lemonade on her dress? “What had I done?” he asked her, determined to get the truth out of her. He had to find out why she was mad at him. “Why didn’t you tell me Nick? Why did you hide the truth from me?” Nick was now confused about what Amber was talking about but somewhere deep I his mind he knew that there had to be something. “Amber I don’t—“ “Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you tell me that you donated your kidney to save me?” She yelled out at Nick, who was now in shock. His mind travelled and it landed on Tate, it had to be Tate that had told her about his act of kindness. He was now speechless, looking into the eyes of the woman who was now carrying a piece of himself in her. He eyes began to water even more and he was afraid that his explanation was not going to be enough to satisfy her. Nick tried to open his mouth to talk but his words failed him, all only thing he could do was move his hands, hoping that she could understand that gesture. “Nick, answer me!” Amber yelled at him. “Were you trying to get money out of my family, did you think that they would give you some big reward for saving my life?” Nick’s eyes widened at the thought that Amber could think such a thing about him, but then it hit him that she always thought him to be bad. “I did not do it because I wanted to get anything out of your family, if did that then I would have asked for my reward a long time ago” Nick ended at that. He walked up to his window and looked out and he saw that the cloud was darkening and it began to drizzle and even worse the cold was starting to set in. “Then why did you save me?” Amber again yelled at him but he ignored her, the more she screamed the more he paid no attention to her. Nick focused his attention on starting the fire in his fire place instead. The fire was started. Nick heard Amber yell out insults at him, but he understood why she was acting like that, this was a big deal for her, she could have died but he saved her. It was done; the fires was lit, and from the look of the weather forecast it was going to rain heavily and the two of them were stuck in his home. He was not mad at Amber but rather at Tate for telling her the truth even when he promised not to tell her the truth. Nick got up from the fire place and he was now facing Amber whose anger had clearly not set, instead it was getting worse. “I’ll tell you but please sit down” he begged Amber who hesitated a bit but she obeyed him and sat down and Nick did the same. “Who told you that it was me who donated my kidney to you?” Nick asked her patiently, a deep part of him already knew the answer. She looked away from Nick and then back at him. “It was Tate. I mean he did not tell me, I overheard him and my sister talking about it. Can you believe it that the two of them wanted to keep it a secret from me?” That revelation from Amber shocked Nick, he believed the worst of his friend without finding out the truth. I’m sorry Tate; I really did not know that— He stopped himself from thinking the worst of his friend. Nick cleared his throat and he readied himself to speak. “Does Tate and Viola know that you’re here? I mean does he know that you know the truth and that you are at my place?” “No. they don’t know a thing. In fact I didn’t even think about it all this, this morning I just left their house” she cried, placed her hands over her face, to shield herself from Nick’s stare. “Well I’ll have to call him and inform him that you’re at my place, okay” Amber said nothing; rather she just nodded her head in agreement. Nick whipped out his cell phone and dialed Nick’s number but there was a loud sound of thunder striking outside and then all the light in his house went off, leaving only the light from the fire place. “What happened?” Amber yelled out in fear, standing up from her chair to walk towards him. She tripped over something on the floor and fell over, Nick catching her right before she could land face first. “Are you okay?” Nick asked Amber, concerned that she might have hurt herself and that was not something that he wanted. Nick’s concerned worsened when he saw that Amber held her hand on the spot that the operation was performed. He too had been doing that whenever he felt a pain or discomfort in his side and the fact that Amber was doing that worried him. “Are you okay” He held her so that she could not fall and he sat her down onto the chair so that she could relax. “I’m okay” she whispered to him but Nick did not believe it one bit, in some way they both had become similar, hiding behind the pain, smiles and the occasional ‘I’m okay’. Nick walked away from her and left Amber in the living room whilst Nick rushed into the kitchen and came back holding a glass of water towards Amber, who gladly took it and drank it. “Thanks” she said to him and placed the glass onto the coffee table. “You’re welcome” nick took the glass from the table and he tried to walk away to avoid Amber’s questions. “Nick wait, why did you do it?” she asked him silently and that hit Tate hard, deep into his soul. He turned around and he looked at Amber and sat down on the chair besides her. “I couldn’t just stand there and do nothing, you were hurt and you were going to die and if it meant that I was to save your life then I am honored to be the one to do just that. In fact I would have done that for just about anyone” Amber felt honored that Nick had saved her out of the kindness of his heart and not for some selfish reason but she also felt bad that he would have done that for anyone and not just her. Why would that concern you? Your heart belongs to Steven does it not? The question puzzled around in her mind and for once again she doubted her own mental and emotional state. “Thank you, aren’t you supposed to call my sister and brother in-law?” she asked Nick who looked at his cell phone and dialed the number, he hung the phone and his calm faced was replaced with a disappointed look. “What happened?” Amber asked Nick. “All networks are down; I guess the thunder must have shut down all power lines” “So what does that mean?” she asked Nick, who looked at her with a blank expression on his face. “Well, I can’t call your sister and brother in-law until the power is back and that means you’ll have to stay here, with me” Amber’s heart skipped a beat, although she was not fully herself when she packed up her bag to move in with Nick, now that she was faced with the prospect of staying it was all becoming daunting. She was actually going to stay with Nick, at his house, for the night or for as long as this storm lasts. “Okay—I’ll stay” she told Nick, as if she actually had a choice. Amber did not want step out into the storm yet again, the last thing she wanted was to get herself into trouble again and this time she might not make it. “I’ll get your room ready” Nick said to her. He walked out of the living area and left Amber alone.  Amber did not understand what was going on, she could not see nick’s property clearly but she could tell that it was a large piece of land, yet he lived alone. She also could not understand how it was that there were no family pictures hung on his wall, his house seemed so empty and lonely and Nick did not come across as such as a person. Come on Nick, do something to get rid of her. His mind pushed him but Nick did not know what he was going to do, considering the fact that he could not put her out due to the storm that was going on outside. Nick tried his best to clean up the spare room that his stepsister occupied every time she visits him and he hoped that Amber was going to be satisfied with that, she was a demanding woman after all. Nick stepped back and he looked at the bed that he had neatly fixed, a blanket printed with unicorns. Sometimes Nick wondered if his little sister would ever grow out of such little things. Nick walked out into the living room, only to find that Amber was no longer sitting on the couch but rather she was staring out the window and looking at the greying skies. She turned her head only to see that Nick was staring at her. “I’m done with your room. I’ll take your luggage in” without waiting for her answer, Nick walked away taking Amber’s luggage with her. Nick’s heart quickened at the memory of Amber standing at his window and staring outside and she looked even more beautiful when her eyes met his. Nick turned around and he knocked into Amber. “I’m so sorry” he apologized but Amber smiled at him. “You know what’s funny?” Amber asked Nick, who could not understand why she was smiling at him. “What is it?” Nick asked her “It’s weird that every time the two of us meet, it always because we bump into one another, literally” she joked, causing Nick to laugh at the joke too. ** “Can you reach her?” Viola asked her husband, frantically. They had woken up, Amber was nowhere to be found, and that immediately sent Viola into panic mode. She ran into every room of the house and still her younger sister was nowhere to be found. Viola woke her husband up that morning and they had called everyone that they could and yet still there was no Amber, she had not left a note or informed anyone of her ware bouts and that just made Viola a bit more worried. A million thoughts went through her mind of the dangers that her sister could be facing, Viola was well aware that her younger sister was recovering from her surgeries and at this point anything could go wrong. Tate removed his cell phone from his ear and placed it into his pocket, he looked at his wife with a sad expression on his face, and Viola knew immediately that something was wrong. “What happened?” Viola raised her voice at her husband, who had no idea how he was to begin telling Viola the truth. “I’m sorry I can’t reach anyone else” “Why not?” she angrily asked her husband, who seemed lost for words. “The lines are all down, due to the storm” Immediately the worst thoughts travelled through Viola’s mind. The last time that this had happened she had almost lost her younger sister and she was afraid that it would happen again. Viola quickly grabbed her car keys and she was about to leave when Tate, her husband grabbed her shoulder and met her eyes. “I know you’re worried about your sister but you can’t go outside, you know how this weather can get” “But something might happen to my sister” she tried to explain to her husband. “And if anything happens to you, our daughter will not have a mother” Viola knew that her husband was right; there was no way that she could leave the house at that moment and time. Viola placed her keys back onto the table, her hands were shaking, and her head was spinning. Her husband kissed her forehead, trying to reassure her but Viola did not want that, she just wanted her younger sister back home with her.
