Faye–POV
I attempted to pull away, but Alpha Oscar held me tight. "Follow my lead," he ordered. Overwhelmed by fear, I had no choice but to obey, despite the longing to escape. His presence forced me to stay by his side, and through him, I could feel the comforting warmth of our bond; Bree, my wolf, reassured me that Alpha Oscar was still our mate. We made our way to a remote forest area, where my apprehension grew, uncertain of Alpha Oscar's motives.
"Relax, he means us no harm," Bree communicated, echoing the reassurances of Alpha Oscar's wolf, Jake.
"What's the purpose of this?" I managed to ask.
"It's time we discussed our unresolved mate bond," Alpha Oscar revealed.
"I'm aware of it, yet I can't grasp why the mate bond is still not served," I admitted.
"Our wolves refuse to sever the mate bond, leaving us irrevocably connected," he clarified.
"Has Mae been informed of this? I've complied with her demands," I said, seeing a flicker of confusion in Alpha Oscar's eyes. It dawned on me then that Mae had kept the brutal details of her torture—whippings and lashings—secret. Under the threat of death, she had forbidden me from revealing her cruelty. Her dominance had cost me dearly, straining my strength and darkening my life.
"Why do you keep blaming Mae? She has been good to you." Alpha Oscar's eyes and aura felt different when he said he was under some spell, but I couldn't determine, as my wolf was too weak to detect the spell. He won't believe me even if I tell him Mae is a bully.
"Nothing, Alpha Oscar," I said.
"Just Oscar is fine. You don't belong to my pack anymore," Oscar reminded her, his voice tinged with anger and disappointment.
"Nothing. I mean, yes, I rejected you. What do you want me to say now?" I responded.
"I want you back in the pack," he stated plainly.
"I won't return. I'm no longer a part of the Orion Pack," I insisted, and Oscar seemed even more irritated by my words. "Why would you want me back? You're getting married to Mae soon, aren't you? I don't want to cause more trouble or be humiliated," I shared, the pain and frustration evident in her voice as the words she'd been holding back flowed freely.
"You're not seeing the bigger picture. I need you to stay close; otherwise, you'll enter mate heat, which could be fatal without me nearby," Oscar explained.
"Why should you care? I can look after myself," she countered. "We should find a permanent solution to end this mate bond."
"I've been trying. I've consulted witches to break the mate bond," Oscar retorted sharply. "They've told us we must stay together for three more months until they can sever our connection completely."
"No, I can't stay with you," I said.
"I know, and I can't upset Mae," Oscar said.
"Then let's act as if we're nothing to each other. And when the mate heat strikes, you have Mae to quench your thirst," I said.
"And what about you? Will you be with another man during the mating heat? Let him touch you?" Oscar's sudden possessiveness took me aback as he pinned her against the wall, his wolf barely contained, a silent threat to any who dared approach her.
"What I do is none of your business," I retorted. Oscar's grip on my neck sent shivers down her spine, and the mate bond spread beneath her skin.
"Your words may show you hate me, but your body betrays your desire for me to claim you," Oscar whispered seductively, his breath on her earlobe sending a jolt through her.
"Oscar, release me. I can't do this," I whispered.
"Oscar, I told you to cool down and return when I ask you to come, not forcefully enter my pack. Yet, here you are," Atlas said in a stern voice, his aura suffocating. Two Alphas glared down. It was like a Déjà vu moment.
"Do you wish to jeopardize our friendship by getting into my matters?" Oscar taunted, tension crackling in the air.
"Protecting what's mine is in my nature," Atlas replied, his undertone suggesting that I am his mate and Oscar's.
"Faye doesn't belong to you," Oscar asserted, standing his ground.
"By joining the Red Night Pack, Faye falls under my protection, and as her Alpha, her loyalty is to me," Atlas declared firmly. My heart dropped, interpreting his declaration as possessive, coming from the alpha's point of view. Who was protecting his Pack member?
"Faye may be part of your pack, but she remains my mate," Oscar countered. "I retain every right to see and speak with her."
"Well, you rejected her and are getting married to another woman. So, you are just causing trouble for my pack member. I am standing here and not attacking you because of our friendship," Atlas warned.
"You think I am scared of your warning and will stop meeting my mate? I don't care. Attack me, and I'll show you my strength," Oscar provoked Atlas, and I watched as they both shifted into wolves and leaped at each other, attacking. My heart pounded fast in worry as both Alphas stumbled, trying to gain the dominating hand, attempting to hurt or possibly even kill each other.
"Stop, please!" I cried out too late as two of their shuffles drew the attention of the gathered pack members. Even Rex looked surprised at the scene, shifting into half-wolf and human, trying to pull Atlas back. However, Atlas Wolf pushes Rex away, causing him to stagger back, but he holds his ground.
With off-white fur covering my hands and legs, I shifted into my wolf form, positioning myself between Atlas and Oscar's wolves as they lunged at each other. Something strange happened; I felt warmer and warmer, and a wave of magic seemed to escape from my body, pushing Atlas and Oscar away from each other.
"What was that, Bree?" I asked. "How did I use a magic burst to push two alphas away like that?"
"Bree!" I called again, feeling dizzy. I realized I was naked and no longer coated in wolf fur. Warm liquid trickled from my nose, and I tried to blink to make sense of my surroundings. Everything felt out of place, and I heard Oscar and Atlas calling my name in worry before I fell into the void.
