~Xander POV~
“I’m sorry sir but only family is allowed in this area.” a small short haired brunette behind the nurses desk chirped as she continued doing paperwork instead of looking up at me.
“Oh! I apologize… but I’m, uh… looking for my, uumm… fiance’” I finally said hoping she did not sense my hesitation. Trying to stay as calm and reserved as possible since I am the one who hit her with my car.
“OH! Yes of course!” looking up at me… her smile getting bigger as she stares at me with delight.
“Her name please?” Waiting patiently for me to answer.
“Name?” just realizing I do not actually know her name. My heart started to beat a little faster now, although on the outside I’m looking rather calm and collected.
Just as I opened my mouth to speak, she was wheeled past us. A relief washed over me in waves as I was now off the hook to give an answer I did not know. “That’s her right there!”
Stepping away from the desk to follow her down the hall, I waved at the nurse for her assistance as I walked away following the unknown bride.
“Thank you.” was all I said as I left.
“Excuse me Doctor? How is she?” walking up to someone carrying a clipboard and stethoscope around their neck about to walk into her room… room 3124.
Stopping to look at me he turned and eyed me up and down trying to figure out who I was. “She’s alive.” He said not desiring to give much more information out. “But I will know more once I look at her.”
Walking into the room behind him, it looked like every other hospital room I’ve seen. A white cabinet attached to the wall with a white matching sink and sanitizer dispenser hanging on the wall next to it. A small hospital bed with white railings, bed coverings and pillow to match.
Behind her were the blood pressure and monitor machines, all white of course. There was a cream colored curtain that hung from the ceiling and could wrap around the bed in a circular motion if needed for privacy. Next to that was a door which occupied the toilet and sink.
There was a 24” flat screen television mounted on the wall in front of the bed, while a small tanish chair was sitting next to the right side of the bed and a matching loveseat sat at the bottom left side of the room. The room was not very big, however it wasn’t too small either.
I watched as the doctor checked her monitors, vitals and did a small examination on her as he read the ER notes and documented his information in her chart.
Feeling exhausted, I sat down briefly on the loveseat. My head rested on the palm of my hand as my elbow layed firmly on the armrest closing my eyes for a moment.
“Uh uumm.” I heard someone clear their throat and opened my eyes to see the doctor staring at me with a confused look on his face.
“Sorry. Yes sir?” I said in a haze as sleep tried to over take me.
“Are you family, young man?” asking very matter of factly. Seeing my slight hesitation he tilted his head a little and raised his eyebrows to show he was growing weary and impatient of me.
“Well, not exactly… I brought her here and just wanted to make sure she was safe. She seemed to be running from something or someone. She just ran out in front of traffic.”
“I see.” the doctor said frowning a little while looking from me to her and back to me again.
“Well, I cannot let just anyone sit in here with her. Safety purposes you understand?” now looking at me with a stern yet confident look in his face.
“What did you say your name was again?” questioning me. “I didn’t.” I looked at him then continued “but it’s Xander. Xander Mathers.” Now standing while I reached out to shake his hand. “And you are?”
“Doctor Townsend.” his face making a confused look as though he was trying to remember something. “Are you related to Lucas and Claire Mathers?”
Giving a gentle smile, “they are my parents.”
“Well then! If you have any identification on you I can check this out with then I do not see it as a problem for you to visit with our Jane Doe Bride.” now smiling and nodded in approval.
“So, you know my parents?” as I gave him my ID from my wallet.
“Of course! They are friends of the hospital. We have done some business together in various things.” he stopped speaking long enough to verify the ID was mine and I was how I said I was.
“Oh yes… I do remember my father having some business dealings with various hospitals in the greater eastern regions. I did not, however, realize this was one of them.” taking my ID back, placing it into my wallet and putting it back in my back pocket.
“Well, our Jane Doe Bride is stable. She is in a coma at the moment due to the head trauma from being hit with a car. Some broken ribs, a fractured radius and fibula.” he started informing me of her condition as though I was her family.
“Outside of some bruises and scrapes on her face, she should heal beautifully without any major scars or repairs needed.” Us both now looking at her with the last statement.
“Thank you Doctor Townsend.” giving him a genuine smile and shaking his hand.
“Do you think it would be appropriate for me to stay here tonight to keep an eye on her? I have a sickening feeling she needs protecting.”
Eyeing me for a moment, he agreed and said he will clear it with the nurses as well as document it in her chart.
“Now if you would excuse me Xander, I have other patients to check on. I will check on her later.” with that he turned on his heels and walked out of the room leaving me alone with her.” turning to look at her.
“With Jane Doe Bride.” I whispered more to myself than out loud.
I sat down again when my phone started ringing… looking down at the caller ID I said “Hello? Xander here.”
