Chapter 3Kenneth didn’t care that Leon was surly and grouchy—as long as he was awake, coherent, and his foot resembled an actual human foot once again. Leon had drifted in and out of consciousness for most of the day. Kenneth kept a vigil at his side, except when Amy asked for his help. The storm continued to rage outside, the snow drifting higher and higher against the cabin walls, until Kenneth feared they would be trapped in the small building forever. Amy and Woody, however, seemed unperturbed, and Amy spent a good portion of the morning sitting at the kitchen table with her son, going over his schoolbook, and the rest of the afternoon cooking and sewing. Amy made biscuits to eat with the leftover stew, and by the time she served dinner, Leon was awake and sitting up, his gaze moving
