Chapter 5Kristian’s colorful Christmas tree is on the small side—shorter than my six foot three—but it has full branches and a perfect shape, and it’s so overly decorated it looks like an ornament factory exploded onto it. Kristian kneels beside it, grabbing the rug it stands on. “Help me?” I get on the floor next to him. “Let’s pull it in that direction.” He nods toward the window facing my house. Knee-walking backward, we pull carefully so we won’t topple the tree, and little by little, we reveal the fireplace. It’s not the biggest fireplace I’ve seen, explaining why the tree so easily could hide it. It seems too small to heat the house, but I’m sure it’s perfect for chilly nights like this when a little extra warmth and the comfort of a crackling fire will warm up both body and soul
