* Lying in the darkness Fenella wondered about Elaine. She was obviously in love with Simon and yet, while that was nothing new, she hoped that Simon was not really interested in her. During the evening, however, there had been one remark passed that had seemed to Fenella to have a special significance. While Elaine was moving about the studio, one of the bracelets that she wore round her wrist had fallen to the ground. She picked it up with a sharp exclamation of annoyance. “It’s the clasp again, Simon,” she said irritably. “I told you it that wasn’t strong enough, but you would not wait for them to alter it.” It was a lovely bracelet, Fenella had noted, of diamonds and a few small but perfect emeralds set in platinum.
