Immersed in the tall grass, the only sounds his soft steps and the occasional birdcall, the silence stretched physically into infinity. Really. The sun was past its highest point in the sky. It was hot. The road was just visible to the south. The snow around the peak of Mount Ararat shone so brilliantly, he couldn’t keep his eye on it for more than a few seconds. Dan had forgotten his shoes and concentrated on the ground. After a while he stopped to roll a cigarette and realised that he’d made almost no progress, the empty road still distant and elusive. The shepherds and their animals were miles away and anyway, one or two men weren’t enough to shift the Bedford into life. Dan stood for a while, mulling over the problem.
