Despite Kingsley's co-workers having spent the last few days joking and asking him when his "girlfriend " would visit the station, especially with the broadcasted announcement that she was taking charge of the case,he was also a bit concerned about not seeing her.He had already gone through the archives and gotten as much possible information on what Heather had previously asked him but getting it to her was a different thing. He had expected she would come around like she had done before but it had been weeks. Or had he been over eager to see her after their last meeting?
He had also expected she would make good use of his phone number that was in the case file. It had been his personal number which he never normally gave out but no one else needed to know that. Looking at the stack of files that had been staring at him mockingly for weeks, he debated between returning them or picking the other option, which was a bit crazy for his standards.
Muttering a curse under his breath, he shoved them into his bag,got his leather jacket and left informing the officer at the reception he would be back.
In his mind he kept chastising himself about what he was going to do. Appearing at Heather's office announced had not been part of the plan when the day began, but with the day being slow and little for him to do,his mind had conjured the idea and ran with it.
He had a lot to lose if the meeting did not turn out as he expected, but staying in his office waiting for her was not helping.
The large sky scrapper that stood out in the street seemed to be the location of the law firm which she worked for. He had checked her work profile, which thankfully came with the floor on which she was located, making work easier for him. All he needed was to get to the right floor and he would be good from there. The doorman bowed slightly as he got in and the rush of bodies in and out disoriented him a bit. The station's traffic was like a drop in the sea compared to what was happening.
He made his way to the lifts unscathed, not missing the curious looks that he got from those around him. He looked a bit different from all the neatly pressed suits that surrounded him. The elevator pinged to his floor and he squeezed through the bodies and found himself in front of two glass doors branded with AQUINOZ LAW FIRM. He was in the right place. Luckily, there was a friendly receptionist who had spotted him and was beckoning him towards herself.
" Here for someone? ''she asked, her smile a bit too bright for his liking.
" Yes. Heather,'' he replied and watched, as the smile on her face was replaced with a scowl.
" The last office to your left,'' she replied as he made his way into the office space. The offices, thankfully, were different from those at the station. They were all partitioned with frosted glass, providing privacy for the occupants.
He got to the last office and then knocked once at the door before letting himself in.
Of all the faces that he had expected to see, his cousin's face was the last.
She barely looked up before asking if he had an appointment.
" Grace? '' he called to the woman in front of him, startling him.
'' Kingsey?'' she replied, just as surprised to see him.
" What are you doing here ? '' she asked.
" Shouldn't I be the one asking you that? '' he asked.
" I work here. '' she replied offhandedly.
" And I am here to see your boss then, '' he replied, as well trying to make sense of the scene before him.
His cousin was Heather's secretary ? What were the odds?
Before he could continue with his inquisition. Heather made it out of her office, the noise probably having made her curious.
" Kingsley?'' she called before informing Heather that he did not have an appointment but they had something urgent to do together.
He followed Heather inside, not missing Grace's gesture to zip his mouth about them knowing of each other.
