Chapter 9

660 Words
Once again,Heather was finding herself on the other side of the door seeking Ben.The last time ending up with her achieving nothing of what she had set out to do. Now here she was hoping this was his office and not his home like last time. Time was running out,and if she had more time on her hands maybe she would have entertained him and his antics. Knocking once, she let herself in.The secretary this time had informed her he was waiting for her. The man sitting behind the large mahogany desk was a bit different from the one she had met a few days ago. This one oozed power and authority unlike the playfulness she had experienced before. The picture cracked when his boyish grin spread all over his face when he saw her and she couldn't help but taunt him, "I see you have a shirt on today," she said playfully while making herself comfortable on one of the leather seats. Ben couldn't help but laugh at her comment. He knew she was bold and was a natural flirt, something she seemed to have no idea about, which added to why she was so appealing.Deciding to humour her, he replied, " Are those the optimum conditions required for this conversation to take place?" he asked while moving his fingers towards his tie raising an eyebrow towards Heather. "I am not opposed," she replied while taking a folder from her briefcase unaffected. Where others would be flushing in embarrassment, she was unaffected. "Go ahead, " she encouraged, a sly smirk gracing her face. She was shameless and he could be as shameless as well, but he knew she had a goal in mind and this game they were playing could end up very badly. " So why have you been hunting me down? '' he asked her finally. He had an inkling though. " Your dad mentioned you when I met him, '' she said while not giving him any extra information. " So am I your suspect? " he asked. Ben had not felt any kind of hostility form Heather that would point to at her targetting him. " Nope. I may be your father's lawyer but I like making my own judgenments of people, '' she replied sounding sincere in her words. " What I am trying to say is, I need your honesty. That is what I work with. '' she finished off. Lawyers were sharks but her honesty was refreshing. " Okay. Thankyou, '' he replied. As he had finished speaking, Ned popped in with refreshments and as he left he winked at Ben. Ned was trying to play match maker and had been since the first day, but the circumstances at the moment was not the best to bud any romance of sorts. " To answer you, my father and I don't have the best relationship. We have fought severally both privately and publicly and exchanged some not very good words to each other, but I would never play the kind of dirty games he does. '' Ben answered. " One of your fights was presented at court as evidence so that history is well documented. What is the source of all these fights?'' Heather asked. She recalled Matthew's answer and wanted to see if it matched up with his sons. " He was behind my mother's death and no one can convince me otherwise,'' Ben replied, more forcefully than he had been earlier. " On top of that, he wanted to take all my inheritance from my mother to me for himself. That greedy bastard,'' Ben continued. " You know, the rest of my siblings are tied to him for life but they loathe him completely, ''. That was a new piece of information and very fundamental. If none of Matthew's children were in good terms with him, that was something. Heather made a mental note of that. It could always come in handy.
