The following day Kegan laid in bed next to Luke like she usually did. She'd yet to sleep since yesterday.
"Luke?"
He grunted in annoyance. She'd been asking him question after question, some he didn't even think had an answer.
"Are you meant to be here?"
He was quiet for a moment, thinking. It was the first real question's she'd asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you really thinking you're crazy?"
"Insane."
"Really?"
"I think everybody's a little crazy, some just embrace it more than others."
She looked up at the ceiling in thought. "I've never thought about it like that."
"Don't go thinking you're special."
Kegan turned over on her stomach and propped her head on her fists. "Don't tell me you don't think I'm special."
"Maybe to me."
"Maybe?"
"You can't be that special if you're trapped in a place full of 'special' people."
"I'm special."
"Perhaps."
"Can I kiss you Lukey?"
She grinned when he rolled his eyes. "No Kegan."
"You make me feel unspecial."
"You're special for saying unspecial."
"Why?"
"That's not a word."
"Are you shore?"
"That too makes you special."
"What?"
"The way you used shore."
"I'm just a special person Luke." She sighed as though it was a burden. "Can I ask you something?"
"You have been for the past two hours."
"Why are you here?"
"Why are you here?"
"You know why I'm here but I don't know why you are."
"Why are any of us here?"
"I do believe you're insane Lukey but you're not dumb."
"Are you implying something Kegan?"
She peered at him with her dark blue eyes. "I just don't understand."
"You don't understand many things."
"Why get caught on purpose?"
"You think I want to be stuck in a cell 22 hours a day?"
"Of course not."
"No need to beat around the bush."
"You're not dumb enough to leave your messes lying around to be found. Why'd you purposely make a mess?"
"Are you complementing me Kegan?"
She made a face at his raised eyebrow and smirk. "You know I would never do such thing."
"Are you sure, I think I remember you saying-"
"Stop distracting me." She narrowed her eyes at him. "You're supposed to be here for life, if not here, prison."
"I may have gone over board with my mess."
"May? You killed an entire neighborhood."
"Killed is such an innocent word, don't you think? I prefer murdered."
"And left each body, finger print, bloody piece of clothing. For what?"
His lips pulled into a small smile. "If you're assuming I came here for the shared showers, you aren't mistaken."
"You're very good at distracting people."
"Am I?"
"Most people would have said 'thank you' but you continued this little conversation."
"It won't be so little if you keep letting it grow."
"You confuse sometimes."
"Do I?"
"You do."
"How so?"
She studied his face intently. "You tell people what they want to hear-"
"What did you want to hear?"
"You already know."
"It's just a game Kegan, do you not like it?"
"It's one of my favorites."
"Because I let you think I love you for what? Minutes? Seconds?"
"You don't have to make me think you love me Lukey. I already know."
Luke turned on his side and so he could communicate with her better. "It's not hard to distract people."
"..."
"Are we on conversation three? Four?"
"Bastard."
He tsked quietly. "We already went over this." She stared at him blankly. "No need to be so mad Kegan, I'll be your daddy."
She smiled.
"I killed my real one, what makes you think I want a fake?"
"Because I'd be real."
She rolled her eyes. "You may have a daddy kink but I don't."
"Really? I swear I remember-"
"Shut up."
"Are you feeling left out Jasp?"
"f**k off Luke."
Kegan giggled sitting back on her knees. "Do you remember her daddy kink phase?"
"I'm sure the whole neighborhood remembers."
"Stop." Kegan glared at Luke, if Jasper was in view she would've done that same to him.
He only chuckled in reply. She dropped the mad facade when she heard it.
They didn't smile much and if they did it was in a mocking sadistic way. It was rare to hear them laugh, she cherished the moments when they did. Even then, it was in a sinister way.
Right now, it seemed genuine.
As though they weren't in a criminal asylum.
"Do you remember when she thought she could fly?"
Luke up at the ceiling amused. "How could I not? She tried to jump from the roof."
Kegan stared at him incredulously. "I did not think I could fly. I was trying to die."
"Fly your way right to hell."
She rolled her eyes but perked up when Jasper stood up from his bunk.
"Come back for another kiss?"
"Looking for something again?"
"Something different this time."
"There isn't going to be another time."
She grinned. "I think it's cute you believe that."
"I think it's absolutely adorable you think you can talk to me like that."
Her grin widened as she leaned into him. "You're not going to do anything."
She didn't flinch when he grabbed her cheeks in his hands. "You're a handful."
She fell on her back with an 'oof' when he pushed her face back. Giggling she sat back up and fixed her hair.
"Don't tell you just realized that now?"
He only propped his arm on the bar and leaned his head against his hand with a tired look.
"Conversation six?"
She turned to Luke and frowned.
"Dammit. Stop doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Distracting me."
"Distracting you? How am I distracting you?"
"You keep coming up with different topics?"
"I don't come up with them. You do."
"How?" She questioned incredulously.
"Do you even remember what we were talking about Kegan?"
She tapped her chin in thought. "No."
"Are you shore?"
"Oh! We were talking about how special I am."
Jasper sighed and shook his head at her. She looked at him in question.
"What?"
"You're too easy to manipulate."
"Manipulate? What do you mean?"
He was going to say something but patted her head awkwardly instead. "Never mind."
"Don't be jealous I'm special Jasper."
"I'll try."
"Jaspy?"
He gave her a look for the name. "What?"
"Can I kiss you?"
"..."
"Wait- Can you kiss me."
"..."
"I'm going to bed." He sighed and laid back down. She crawled over and hung over the bar.
"You sleep?"
"Of course."
"I didn't think you did."
"Why?"
"You're always awake when I'm awake."
"Goodnight." He dismissed and turned away from her.
She was going to say something but Luke pulled her hair making her sit up.
"Luuuke." She whined rubbing her head.
"Lay down."
"I'm not tired."
"Lay. Down."
She huffed quietly and laid next to him. "You're so bossy."
He was silent watching her look around the room at random things.
"What's in the mattress?"
"Go to bed." He demanded softly.
She turned over and looked at him. "I saw it earlier."
"You wouldn't be asking me what it was if you did."
"I did see it." She defended, even she didn't believe herself.
"Every time you lie your eyebrow goes up."
"You're lying." She gasped covering her eyebrows. He only wiggled his at hers and she couldn't help but giggle quietly.
"I am."
"Luke." She slapped his chest.
"I still don't believe you."
"Maybe I didn't see it but I know there's something in there."
"Do you?"
"Uh huh."
"What do you think it is?"
"Are you trying to distract me again?"
"I'm simply asking a question." He stated quietly looking into her eyes.
She c****d her head in thought, something he's noticed she does without knowing.
"A knife?"
"No."
"A gun?"
"No."
"A fork?"
"No."
"A nail?"
"It's not a weapon." He deadpanned.
"Well shucks, I don't know."
"Do you really wanna know?" He asked quietly. She immediately nodded scooting closer to him. "You can't tell Jasper."
She nodded eagerly and moved even closer. He leaned into her and whispered into her ear.
-
"Luke?!"
"What?" He grunted gruffly in respond to his brother.
"Where are my clothes?" He asked angered.
"I don't know."
Jasper sighed and looked at Luke leaning against his bunk. "I didn't mean to touch your f*****g toothbrush."
"Touch? You used it."
"Where are my clothes?"
Kegan giggled to herself and he looked at her. "You know where they are?"
She quickly shook her head and he walked over to her. "You know where they are."
"Even if I did, I like seeing you naked."
"Kegan." She ignored him and he snapped his fingers. "Kegan."
Her eyes snapped up to him from kneeling on the floor and she slowly smiled.
"Sorry, I got distracted."
