Ryan POV:
Elena looked sadder, and I really couldn't understand why. I cleared my throat, "Elena," I said, "I know we weren't exactly friends in school," I started nervously, she was looking at me, her eyes sparkling with focus as she stared into my own, "I would like to be friends." She put down the coffee mug and intertwined her hands, "I don't know," she said, "I understand if you're not comfortable-" "It's not that," she said, stopping me before I could finish, "it's just, I don't exactly trust people in this town." I nodded as I thought back to Nila and Amy. "I understand. I'm sorry people are like that, but if you ever need a friend..." She nodded, and gave me a smile. "Thank you Ryan," she took another sip of her coffee and I took a sip of mine.
The fire was crackling as we sat in silence now, nothing but warm air between us. I glanced at my watch, "I'll probably head off after this cup," I said, she nodded with a smile, "no problem. Thank you for tonight." I gave her a small smile, feeling so awkward before I put down my mug. "You have my number if you need anything." She smiled and nodded, putting down her mug and getting up, I grabbed my coat and said good bye to the little baby Mason. Elena watched and smiled at the interaction before walking me to the door.
"Thank you for coming," she was looking down at her hands, and I fought the urge to take her hands in mine and pull her towards me. She looked up, her eyes sparkling, "bye."
I drove through the dark road with my brights on. I couldn't stop thinking about Elena, she seemed different. She wasn't the confident and loud girl that I knew in high school and I was curious to know what had really changed, but I didn't want to pry into her private life. I scratched my forehead, before returning my hand to the wheel, what I would give to know... A car passed me on the incoming lane, I glanced in my rear view mirror at the red Toyota, that's weird... No one in town owns a red Toyota, and driving on this road? Then I remembered the second mug in the sink... Oh.
Elena POV:
I sat with the water damaged phone at the fire, hoping that maybe the heat could dry the water that was deep inside the mother board. I wanted to cry. There was no way I was getting this phone to switch on. Headlights flashed through the window, pulling me out of my thoughts. My heart dropped in my stomach. Could it be? Caleb?
~~~
I was angry at him and so I booked a room in a hotel and decided to stay there. I was laying in the king size bed of the hotel, on top of its Egyptian cotton, my phone was on silent and face down as I flicked through the channels on the flat screen. A knock on the door distracting me from finding a good movie to watch, I swung my legs off the bed, pulling down my black pencil skirt over my stocking clad feet and smoothing down my emerald green silk blouse. My curls that were once pinned up tightly and smoothly, were falling effortlessly down my neck. I padded across the soft carpeted room to the door, swinging it open to see Caleb standing there, his mouse brown hair dishevelled. Before I could say anything he wrapped his arms around me and embraced me tightly. "Caleb?" My voice was confused and surprised, "I know we're fighting right now, but I can't live without you," he buried his face in my neck, "you're my wife, my everything and I don't want to lose you." I relaxed in his embrace and softened at his words, wrapping my own arms around him, feeling his warmth through his white formal shirt. "I love you, Elena."
~~~
I jumped up, dropping the phone. My heart was pounding, if this was him... It couldn't be... It could be though because he came before. I ran to the door and pulled it open, the corners of my lips dropping. "Chad," I said confused and disheartened, "were you expecting someone else?" He asked with a blinding smile, I opened the door for him to come in, "no, not really." He walked in and sat down, "I'm sorry that I missed our date," he said as he lounged on the couch, his arms spread out, his left leg draped over his right. I smiled politely, "why are you here, if you don't mind me asking?" He chuckled, "I didn't think that pregnancy brain was real. Wow!" He exclaimed, "you really forgot, didn't you?" His voice was playful and relaxed, "forgot what?" I asked, "you invited me to stay," he said casually, "that doesn't sound like me." He shrugged, "if you changed your mind it's cool, I'll head back to town and see if there's a room available." I felt so confused, I really don't remember inviting him to stay. "I'm sorry," I said as I shook my head, "I must of forgot." Instantly he laughed like it was all just a misunderstanding.
