Katie rubbed my shoulder in comfort while my mother asked randomly. “Doesn’t your Principal love flowers, I remember seeing dogwood flowers in his office that time I picked you two up after you both got into that stupid fight.”
Katie and I glanced at each other with raised brows, and I knew we were thinking the same thing.
Fighting over expensive and delicious chocolate we both saved a lot of money to buy is not stupid. That girl had that punch coming when she slapped our chocolates to the ground and stepped on the box.
“You’re right,” I say to my mother and glanced down at the diary. “Why isn’t it opening?”
“Maybe we aren’t done with the clue just yet.” Katie voiced.
“What do you mean?”
“If you remember, she said something about it “being harder to get to”, now I know this sounds crazy but she could mean that the map is in one of those pots.”
“You’re right, that does sound car-”
The diary reopened and a weird sentence appeared, shocking all three of us. Letting out screams of fright, I throw the diary off my legs as the three of us snuggled closer to one another on the couch. Both Katie and my mum wrapped their arms around me in a tight hug as we quickly raised our legs off the ground and folded them closer to our body, expressions of alarm and horror on our faces as we stared down at the words scribbled on the open page in shock.
Listen to your friend Maria, she’s right.
“Can that thing hear us?” Katie whispered, and I shrugged, dumbfounded.
Yes. It wrote again.
I made the diary magically gifted so it can hear you and speak with you. There will come a time when you'll need its assistance for more than just delivering messages, the diary was infused with a small portion of my soul and magic, so be very careful of how you use it, where you keep it, or who sees it.
After those words appeared the diary shut close, and the room was plunged into deadly silence. I have no idea how long the three of us sat hurdled close to one another as we stared down at the book with expressions ranging from shock to petrification.
“I want to be weirded out by that but I can’t,” I say, a mournful sound in my voice. “The weirder things are, the more normal they appear.”
Katie patted my back encouragingly, the three of us finally relaxing a little bit as we let go of each other and I hesitantly picked up the diary once more.
Breathing in deeply, Katie says. “Your life is just so complicated… I love it!”
“I’m so glad someone is having fun at my expense.”
“So, what are we going to do now, you and I both know it’s going to be hard to try and find the map in his office. He’s not the kind of person to leave his office at anyone’s disposal?”
I shrugged, not having the answer to that question. “If we try to sneak in we’ll get caught before we even reach the door, Principle Cam has camera’s everywhere.”
“How about we sneak into his office during the Halloween costume dance party on Saturday, it’s just after you’re birthday on Friday. Everyone will be in the school gym, so it would be the perfect time to try and sneak in. What do you think?”
She bounced up and down in excitement and her crazy suggestion made me shake my head vehemently.
“How about hell no!”
“Do you have a better suggestion?”
“I–” Sighing in defeat, I shook my head. “No.”
“Didn’t think so.” She grinned triumphantly.
“I guess we’ll just have to go along with your plan then–”
“I’m drawing a line here.” My mother announced, rising to her feet.
Surprised, we gazed at her while she glared down at the two of us with a stern expression.
“I'm willing to go along with anything except sneaking into your Principal’s office, it’s dangerous and you’ll both get into trouble. Just try and figure out how to get it without committing a crime.”
And without another word more she bent to take her empty mug into the kitchen before heading upstairs.
Sighing, I stood as well, also taking our empty mugs to the kitchen to wash while Katie followed from behind, leaning her elbows on the counter.
“So, what time would be perfect to sneak into his office?”
I glanced at Katie in disbelief, wiping my hands clean with a dry towel when I was done with the dishes. “You heard my mother; we can’t sneak into his office. Besides the fact that it could get us in trouble, you and I both know we need his security code to disable his alarm and his camera’s?”
“I do know that, which is why I came up with an idea. Since your 17th birthday is this Friday, we can throw a party inviting everyone from school, including the teachers and Principal Cameron. At the party, his defences are sure to be shut down, and I’ll find a way to get a copy of his key and security alarm combinations. As for the camera’s, I know a guy who can shut it down for a couple of minutes with just a simple click of a button. During the party, we’ll sneak into the office when everyone is distracted with the fireworks display.”
Shocked, I stared at my best friend, frightened by how quickly she came up with that under 20secs.
“There will be no party Katie.” I deadpan. “I will celebrate my birthday the way I’ve always done, a Skype call with dad in the morning, birthday cake with mum during breakfast, school, and then shopping with you.”
“There’s going to be a party Eva, I’ve been preparing this ever since we met three years ago and I declared you my best friend. You’re not going to ruin it for me.” She snapped.
“Besides, think about your biological mum here, what would be of her Kingdom if we don’t try to help?”
“That’s just mean and manipulative!” I mumble in annoyance. “But, I’m conceding to your point. So, what’s your genius plan for getting the key and alarm combinations?”
Grinning, she says slyly. “Oh you don’t need to worry yourself about that, I’ll take care of everything.”
“How?”
“I’m not telling.”
