Bad News

(Ethan) As I arrive in front of my pack house, I see my Beta, Felix, waiting for me. If he was waiting for me, then something must have happened. I went in full Alpha mode and got out of my car. “Alpha” Felix bowed his head. When he looks back at me, I see his lips twitch, and I instantly relax, knowing there is nothing wrong. I’ll just follow with whatever he’s doing. “Beta” I said, giving him a firm nod. We stayed looking at each other for a few seconds before we burst out laughing while fist bumping. “How was your day bro?” he asks. Feliz and I have known each other since we were in diapers. He’s one of my best friends and my Beta. I trust him with my life. “It was… interesting. Hey, is your Grams available?” I asked. “Yeah, I was waiting for you because she made your favorite pie. Come on, let’s go” he said. We walked down the dirt road until we came to a cabin with different flowers in the front. Grams always loves her flowers. It gives her something to do. “Grams, we’re here” Felix calls as he opens the door. I enter the house that has always felt like home to me. I saw Felix's grandmother walking towards me. She’s about five feet tall, give or take, and about eighty years old. “Hello Ethan, how are you son?” she asks as I lean down to hug her. “I’m good grams. How are you feeling?” I asked. Ever since her mate died of old age, her health has been declining. “I feel much better” she smiles before gently patting my cheek. “Come, I made fresh apple pie” she says, and my stomach growls, making her laugh. We sit at the table, and she places a large piece of pie in front of me and another one in front of Felix. She then brings two glasses of milk and places them in front of us. She has always seen us as kids, but I don’t mind. She’s the only one that does this. I took a bite and moaned. I love the way she makes pies. They are the best. “This is amazing grams, thank you” I told her. “I’m glad you like it” she smiles. “Mm, grams, I need to ask you something” I said, and she took a seat, giving me her attention. “There’s this new worker at my firm. She’s amazing at her job, but she’s human”, I said, making her eyes widen. Felix already knew I had found my mate. “A human? Does she know?” Grams asks. “Yes, I don’t know how, but she knows. But that’s not what I wanted to talk to you about. You used to tell Felix and me stories about when you were little. How you once saw a witch?” I asked and she nodded. “How did you know she was a witch?” I asked. “I didn’t at first, since I still hadn’t shifted, but there was something about her. Then one day I saw my father speaking with her, and we were attacked by rogues. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have time to move. She saved me using her powers. Oh, and how her eyes changed colors when she used her powers. Her eyes would also change when she was angry, sad, or happy. I remember after everything was over that she told my father that witches were still being hunted and that there weren’t that many of them left. That she was afraid that within a decade or so all witches would have vanished. After that, I saw her three more times before she disappeared”, Grams said. “What color did her eyes change to?” I asked. “Her eyes changed to silver. It was always amazing to see. She was human, but with magic”, Grams said. “Do you think there could be more witches out there?” I asked. “I don’t think so, son. Witches haven’t been seen for decades. Finding a witch or a warlock is impossible. Not even the Elders have seen a witch in decades. Why do you ask?” Grams asks. ‘Tell her, she’s like our grandmother, and she will never betray us’ my wolf says. “I found my mate” I say, and Grams gives me a huge smile. “She’s the human” Grams said, and I nodded. “Yes, but something happened today. To be honest, I don’t understand it much myself”, I told her. I began to tell them what happened today and I could tell they were both listening very carefully. “Let’s say that she’s a witch. Shouldn’t you have felt her power or something?” Felix asked. “Not unless her powers were bound, so she could be safe, but for someone to bind her powers it must be done by another witch”, Grams says. ‘Alpha, there are cops at the apartment you asked us to keep an eye on’ David, one of my warriors links me. ‘What? How long have they been there?’ I asked. ‘About five minutes’ he linked back. Suddenly, my whole body stiffens and I feel like I’m underwater. ‘Elvin, what’s going on?’ I asked my wolf. ‘I don’t know’ he replied. ‘Ethan’ I heard Skyler’s voice in my head. I jumped to my feet, looked around, and my wolf was on full alert. It was like she screamed my name, but it sounded like it was far away. How though? ‘s**t, the windows to her apartment just exploded’ David links me. ‘We need to go to mate, NOW!’ my wolf growls. “I’m sorry, Grams. I need to go to my mate. Something’s wrong” I said before running out of the house. I ran back to my car where I got in and went as fast as I could to my mate’s apartment. ‘You should have just shifted’ my wolf growls as he paces in my head. ‘I know, but she lives in the city and there are cops at her house’ I reminded him. He huffs and continues to pace. I arrive at her apartment and I see there is an undercover car and a regular cop car. I spotted David and gave him a firm nod. ‘You could go back to the pack’, I linked him as I headed upstairs. When I get to her door, I knock. I can hear some type of commotion inside. The door opens, and a man looks at me. “Good evening. I’m Mr. Locklear. I’m a lawyer and a friend of Miss Morales. I need to speak with her” I said. “Please come in. I’m Detective Piere and this is Detective Maxwell. That’s office Swayer”, the detective introduces, but my eyes land on my mate who is lying on the sofa unconscious. “What happened?” I asked as I rushed to her side. “She passed out when we gave her some… bad news” Detective Maxwell said. “What news?” I asked. “Her sister is dead” Detective Maxwell said.
