(CAMILLE’S POV)
The moment I got back in to my car, the world seemed to tilt on its axis. My carefully constructed facade, the cool, collected Camille Arison, shattered into a million pieces. It was like a dam had burst, and all the emotions I had painstakingly bottled up for seven years came crashing down.
Panic clawed at my throat, my breath catching in my chest. Every muscle in my body tensed, a tremor running through my limbs. I felt a cold sweat prickle on my skin, and the faces of the onlookers swam before my eyes.
"Miss Arison?"
I barely registered the concerned voice of my bodyguard, Liam. He was a towering figure, a former Special Forces operative, now tasked with ensuring my safety.
"I... I'm fine," I managed to croak out, my voice trembling.
Liam, however, was not convinced. His eyes, trained in reading people, narrowed. "You don't look fine, Miss. Here, drink some water."
He held out a bottle of water, his hand steady and reassuring. I took a shaky gulp, the cool water doing little to soothe the fire raging within me.
How could he? How could he just appear like that, after all these years?
Six years. Six years I had spent rebuilding my life, burying the past, creating a new identity. Six years of pretending to be someone else, of living in constant fear of discovery.
And now, here he was, a ghost from the past, shattering my carefully constructed world.
His eyes... those intense, sea blue eyes, held the same power to both mesmerize and terrify me as they always had. They seemed to bore into me, stripping away the layers of my carefully constructed facade.
He looked different, more rugged and more handsome. The boyish charm was replaced by a brooding intensity, the lines on his face a testament to the years that had passed. But his eyes, oh, his eyes were the same.
The way he called my name, only him called me ‘Amaya’ and the way he looked at me... that fierce, possessive look... it sent shivers down my spine. It was a look that evoked memories I had tried so hard to suppress, memories of stolen kisses, whispered promises, and a love that had tragically imploded.
Liam's voice broke through my reverie. "Miss Arison, are you alright? Can we drive off now?”
I nodded numbly, feeling a wave of dizziness wash over me. I needed to get away from here, away from the echoes of the past, away from the haunting presence of Atlas Windsor.
I felt a sense of dread creeping over me as the car was driven away. I knew this was only the beginning. Atlas Windsor was back in my life, and I had a feeling that this encounter would have far-reaching consequences.
The Kids! His Kids! What would he do when he finds out? How long could I put on this facade?
“Take me to this address.” I ordered giving a piece of paper.
I laid back against the plush leather seats trying to soothe my headache. I didn’t open my eyes until we arrived at the destination.
A cute bungalow adorned with flowers welcomed me as I stepped out of the car.
“Wait here please.” I told Liam and he nodded remaining in his position.
I walked up the stairs and rang the doorbell. Almost immediately as if sensing my presence, the door was unlocked and thrown open.
“Oh Em.” I said walking in to her arms as we hugged each other.
She held on to me and we stood sobbing on to each other for some time. We stayed there for some time and in that moment, I felt like my old self.
Emily gently pulled me in to her home and led me to sofa. Her eyes shone with tears.
“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you, my friend.” She said brushing my cheek affectionately and taking my hand tightly in hers.
“I’ve missed you too Emily.” I told her genuinely.
We stayed silent for a moment as if communicating without Words. Emily was my only family until six years ago when things changed. We grew up together in the orphanage and struggled through thick and thin.
She was away studying a programme France the year that my life changed. Sometimes I wonder if her presence would have changed some things.
Emily got us some drinks and then she faced me squarely.
“Tell me,” she said squeezing my hand. “Tell me everything. Did you see him?”
I sighed and nodded. Emily is the only who with the knowledge of the whole truth.
“I saw him.” I told her and gave her a recount of the meeting we had.
“Oh my goodness Maya. This is such a huge mess. What are you going to do? Are you going to keep on pretending to be someone else? What about your parents, don’t you think they deserve the truth?” She asked me.
I inhaled a shaky breath. “They do and I’ll figure that out.“
“Maya, what about the kids? If Atlas finds out about the kids….”
“He won’t find out! I won’t let those killers come near my kids.” I said sternly as I stood up with folded arms.
Emily stood up as well.
“Do you have a plan then? Because this is messy. Maybe you need to go back.” She suggested.
“No. I won’t run away again. I’m not helpless or scared anymore.” I said firmly. “And I do have a plan. I’ve decided to take my own pound of flesh. I’m not that scared and helpless orphan anymore. I’m going to pay them for what they did to me and especially for taking the life of my baby. I’m going to take everything they own and leave them in the deepest dark hole.”
