Dean
I watched as mom left with Kate. I couldn't get her smiling and blushing face out of my mind and wanted to be there with her. To see her get flustered, tp see her smile brightly or to look at things curiously as she experiences new things... I knew she is going to fine with mom, but I felt a bit jealous.
- Stop being all depressed because they didn't take you with them and bring your cloak instead. - I turned around seeing dad said behind me, while he put his on hood on his head. Black mist surrounded him as his scythe appeared in his hand. I moved my hand around in the air and my own black cloak appeared around my shoulders.
- Where are we going? - I asked while I put the hood on my head.
- There was a huge accident nearby... A train slid off of the rails. - dad said with a gloomy voice and I sighed as we teleported to the place of the accident. It doesn't matter how many times I've experienced these kind of situations before, I still couldn't completely believe them. Firefighters tried to save people from the burning train while further away the engine exploded. The desperate shouting of the victims and their families filled the air with the cracking sound of the raging fire. The metal screeched as the firefighters cut through and the scent of ashes, burning flesh, gasoline and blood filles the air. Nothing was more disgusting than the sweet scent of burning human flesh. A man whose jacket was on fire and his face already distorted by his injuries rushed by us and his eyes met mine. That moment he stopped running and fell on his knees begging me.
- Please... Don't take me away... - that moment a firefighter rushed to him and extinguished the fire. Paramedics took the man to an ambulance and we stood there waiting for any casualties like condors after a m******e.
- I know this hurts son, but we can't do anything for them now. - dad said with a hand on my shoulder. As I looked up at his face, it was filled with remorse, his eyes reflected the flames and I couldn't imagine how he was able to take care of all those millions of people who died in vain ever since the existence of death. I sincerely admired my father for taking this burden onto his shoulders just to make his sister happy and to give a proper end of what Life created.
- If I were you, I never would've accepted this role. - I said my thoughts out loud. He smiled a bit at me and I felt guilty for saying this, knowing that he expects me to take his burden one day or at least part of it.
- Sorry... - I said and couldn't bring myself to look into my father's eyes again. He sighed.
- Don't worry, I know. I've spent decades in thinking that my method isn't the best. That I should find out a new way for this. But, when I saw your mother growing old, living her previous life happily and overcoming her hardships as my wife I realized, I created one of the most beautiful things on Earth. Because without us, without death, humans might never be able to properly cherish what they have. - another explosion happened and a woman ran towards the remaining of the train. She fought herself through the firefighters and ran into the burning wrecks.
- Follow me. - dad said and I felt horrible knowing that we are on our way to take that brave woman's life. She was searching for someone in the smoke and flames, desperately screaming the name of a man.
- Toby! Toby where are you?! - she looked around while we just walked behind her. The train screeched again and before bunch of shattered metals could've fallen onto her head, dad tripped her. The woman fall ahead and just avoided her death. I looked at my father with amazement and he winked.
- I thought we couldn't interfere... That was the rule you taught me. - he shrugged.
- Rules don't apply on those who created them. By the way, you already crossed the line with Kate. We can't save all of them, but that doesn't mean we mustn't help from time to time. Sooner or later, we will meet all of them.
- Mom!!! - a child shouted and the woman rushes towards the sound crying with relief.
-Toby! Oh Thanks God! - she hugged her son crying with joy and without caring about the danger that surrounded them.
- Now is your turn. - dad said and I noticed the gasoline in time. I stood between the mother and the walls and let the explosion towards the other side of the train. The new explosion created an exit for them but only for a short while. My eyes met the child's and I screamed.
- RUN! - he grabbed his mother's hand and pulled her after him. Leading her out of the wrecks. They collapsed onto the grass and paramedics ran to their assistance. Dad hugged me over the shoulder.
- I'm so proud of you. - I looked at him and knew I might saved two lives, but soon, I'll take dozens. Slowly but steadily, our time to act came and we walked in two different directions. I searched between the wrecks and found a guy, around my age. He was stuck between two huge metal parts, one sticking out of him. When our eyes met he just smiled and said.
- f**k I got the intern... - his eyes closed and I opened the gate for his soul to pass. As I continued, I met an old lady. She was laying against her cane, looking at a point under the train. I stood to her side and she just smiled kindly. I reached for her hand and helped her take a few steps ahead. She blew a kiss towards the wrecks and said.
- I'm ready to go after him now. - I nodded and her soul left the space we called Earth and human reality. I watched as many other followed this kind woman. Despite the gorgeous sight of the shining souls ascending to a higher or lower dimensions, depending on their own actions, I still heard the cry, and felt the pain of those who they left behind. Dad found me, as my feet grew roots where the lady disappeared.
- Let's go home. - he said and I just took a glance at him before following dad.
- This sucks... - I mumbled and he just smiled at me warmly, while he hugged me and we landed on our sofa.
- Growing up sucks, or at least that's what I heard from your mom. It would be better if you can finally accept, that death, and being death is part of life.
- How could I accept it? I mean, have you heard their cries? - I was freaking out but dad just nodded.
- Yes, I also heard few of their first cries. Humans tend to arrive and leave this world crying, it's up to them if those tears are going to be tears of regret or tears of joy. - he stopped explaining because the main door flew open.
- We are hooome! - mom shouted happily and walked to the living room with her hand full of bags. As she saw us her joyful smile tamed into a compassionate one.
- Have you had a rough day my loves? - she asked softly and dad sighed getting up. He walked to mom and leaned his head on her chest under her chin. She just smiled and closed her eyes as she caressed his head.
- It's alright. - she whispered and Kate suddenly peaked into the room through the door. When our eyes met she blushed then, for some unexplainable reason, she just opened her arms widely and whispered softly.
- I'm home!
