Chapter 4: Choice Is Yours (1)
I have to…
Ring, Riiiing! From my pocket the persistent ringtone I had from a well known children’s cartoon was on full blast, completely breaking the super serious atmosphere just now…
“I’m sorry…” I apologized.
“It’s alright, I’ll wait.” With not much of an expression on his face Daniel simply stood there until I took out my phone and checked the screen. Surprisingly it was someone from my class, Jeca, we used to work on a project together and I left her my number, but she’d never actually called me like this.
I picked up. “Hello?” The sound on the other end of the line was quiet for a while until she spoke up at last.
“Katlyn I’m sorry to trouble you but can you run to the store and buy paper for the printer? The teacher said she needed some and since you’re still outside I thought I’d call you.” It was in a quick voice that she spilled all that.
“Um, sure? I’ll go tell her I might be a bit late.” I replied and my answer seemed to be satisfactory enough for her to end the call.
Now that I was faced with Daniel again I suddenly felt strange…
“You don’t like me?” Daniel asked while standing there under the shade of his pitch black umbrella, although at the time the sun had already been hidden by the clouds, I could see the dark shadow his umbrella cast onto the side of his face.
“I do like you actually.” I admitted but then I wondered if this was even right. “Look, I don’t believe in vampires, alright? And in hunters and everything… Yeah you’re a bit cold but that could be because you have poor blood circulation and the stuff where you healed in front of me could have been a magic trick and-” Before I could continue blabbering about whatever came to mind, all for me to avoid his question he pulled me in again.
“What do you want me to do to prove it to you?” Daniel asked me, short and clear… It felt like nothing was complicated for this man… he made everything seem so simple.
“Garlic, if you can’t eat garlic then-” He stopped me.
“That’s a myth.” Daniel said without hesitation, his tone was still as cold as before.
“What is?” I asked dumbfounded.
“That vampires can’t eat garlic.” Daniel said with a deadpan expression.
“Eh?” I tilted my head to the side. He nodded as if to confirm he wasn’t joking. Not that someone with a stoic face like that could ever make jokes…
“So like… what are vampires like scared off? Crosses?” I asked while looking completely serious.
“Not really, it’s just two sticks crossing each other, it’s not much different than a regular object.” Daniel said as he leaned back against the wall of the building.
“Holly water?” I asked.
“No.” He shook his head again.
“Silver bullets?” I inquired.
“It won’t do more damage to a vampire than it will to a regular human.” Daniel said while giving me a small smile. “You really don’t know anything about vampires, do you?” He questioned.
And to be fair all my knowledge was from an overrated teen drama with vampires… it’s not like I had any actual idea of anything but the fact that garlic didn’t work on him really shook me for some reason…
“I’m still waiting for your answer, but I guess you’re not ready yet… If you want to find out more about me though I’d be happy to teach you.” The way Daniel spoke in a low and seductive manner made me unable to reply to him at all. He slowly moved towards his car across the street.
He said he’d tell me if there was something I needed to know… but… what did I really want from all this?
As I wondered that I rushed to the school store to buy the printer paper that was asked of me, I actually wasted too much time talking to him that now I’m late for class.
“Good for you to show up Katlyn.” My professor wasn’t happy at all. “Go sit down!” He yelled at me.
“But-” I couldn’t even mention the printer paper as that same girl Jeca called me over to sit next to her.
“He probably forgot he even needed that, it’s tough being that old, aint it?” Jeca said with a smile on her face she looked really kind at that moment.
But why was she talking to me now since we never really talked before this?
“Hey, outside, was that your boyfriend?” Jeca asked me in a low whisper while nudging me with her elbow beneath the desk.
“No, not really…” I denied it although hesitantly. It’s true I wasn’t dating him or anything, but that wasn’t the issue here…
“Really? Then can you introduce me to him?” Jeca asked while her eyes gleamed, she seemed really happy by my response.
“Oh? Well… sure…” I agreed without actually meaning to.
“Great! He looked so cool… Where did you meet him?” Jeca asked me as she leaned closer to me, he expectant eyes made me a bit wary of her.
“At my work…” I said, although I didn’t really want to continue speaking with her, somehow I felt bad I had agreed but too ashamed to tell her I changed my mind…
And later that day at work I was completely out of it…
“Katlyn, you can’t keep messing up like this!” My manager scolded me with an angry look on his face. I had dropped several things that day, thankfully I didn’t break anything or else it would be coming out of my paycheck.
“I’m sorry…” I apologized quickly.
“If you’re feeling sick or can’t work you better go home! I can’t have you giving back wrong change to people!” He continued yelling and I just hung my head low in embarrassment.
After I changed out of my uniform I headed outside only to see Jeca there…
“What are you doing here?” I asked her in a somewhat sheepish sounding voice, I must have looked just as tired as I sounded.
“To meet with the handsome guy of course! Why else?” Jeca admitted, and although I usually valued honesty in people, I felt like this wasn’t the time or place for any of that…
“He’s not here today…” I said while looking at the time, it was near the time he usually comes over but to my surprise he hadn’t arrived. Maybe he just decided not to come today.
“That sucks… can you call him?” Jeca asked me with a tilt of her head, she had a sweet voice that came along with her petite frame. Honestly she really was very pretty… I was sure Daniel would like someone like her…
Maybe that was even more of a reason as to why I didn’t want her to meet with him…
“I don’t have his number.” I lied… of course I had it, but I wasn’t going to tell her that.
“Then…” Jeca took a few steps closer to me and held my hands. “Do you want to hang out with me instead?” She asked me and at that moment I felt like I had snapped out of a trance or something.
“I guess…” I nodded my head, I hadn’t expected her to ask me out.
“Alright! Let’s go! There are a ton of fun stuff we could do!” Jeca said while leading me away to her car. She was parked at the gas station with a rather old BMW, not that I cared for cars much but to me it didn’t feel like that one suited her personality at all…
As she drove off, I stared blankly outside the window, as everything outside seemed to be moving in slow motion to me… The last few weeks have made my head a complete mess and the more time passes by I don’t feel like I understand any of it…
“We’re here!” Jeca excitedly exclaimed as I laid my eyes on a club that looked hard to get in, it was called ‘Heaven’s Door.’ I didn’t really visit places like that, mostly because I spent all my time working but I guess there’s a first time for everything…
“Come on, we have to hurry up and get inside before the special booths are all taken!” Jeca pulled me by the arm and when we got to the door we were let inside easily. They didn’t check our IDs or even the list to see if our names were written. It was a bit strange…
