Chapter 7: Choice Is Yours (3) *** “What were you thinking?” Daniel asked me while looking down at me, he was holding me in his arms. I had landed safely, as he asked me that question I could barely open my mouth to speak. “Oh, I wanted to see if vampire’s speed was also a myth… I guess not…” I remarked in a genuine manner. “You shouldn’t be making jokes like that…” Daniel scolded me a bit but he didn’t seem angry at all. “Well I’m not much of a comedian but I’m pretty sure that one landed rather well.” I confidently declared. “Get it? Landed… like I did from the forth floor.” I asked, half explaining my joke. “You weren’t at the forth floor, that was the sixth floor.” Daniel corrected me, as if it mattered which floor of the building I had thrown myself off of. “Hey, did you know I was here?” I asked him with a tilt of me head, unknowingly I had wrapped my arms around his shoulders. “No, if I did I would have rehearsed catching people dropping from buildings.” Daniel held back a laugh but I didn’t… the entire situation was rather silly after all. “Haha… well that really was the most intense ‘trust fall’ I’ve ever done!” I remarked and he finally put me down on the ground, I managed to regain my balance and look at him. “Did you make your choice yet?” Daniel asked me then glanced up at the window where the hunters were looking at him from. “Ah, about that… can I ask you, is there something special about my blood?” It was the question that had been on my mind since before. “Hm? No, not really.” Daniel remarked rather quickly. “Then why were they trying to take some from me?” I asked him seriously yet again. “Were they?” Daniel asked me with surprise then glared up at those standing at the window, they scurried away quickly after that. I don’t know whether it was because they were intimidated or annoyed at the way things ended. “Yeah, they said my blood would go for a lot, then mentioned you must have had some, when I said you didn’t, they panicked a bit then wondered if they needed to research my blood first.” I explained in my simple understanding of what had happened. But I noticed it on Daniel’s face that there was more to it, something I hadn’t caught when it all happened. “Have people ever told you that you’re rather air headed?” Daniel asked, his gentle tone in which he spoke made it clear he wasn’t trying to be condescending towards me. “Yeah, I hear that a lot, why?” I asked while tilting my head to the side. He opened the car door and let me in. “It’s just… anyone else in your situation would be terrified by what happened in just a few days but you, you’re so… relaxed, you’re even making jokes after you fell from a building…” Daniel sighed heavily, it was obvious he didn’t know what to make of me. “I guess I’m just like that…” I said with a low voice. “As to my choice… if I choose to stay with you, how can I be sure you’re not manipulating me and trying to drink my blood?” I asked while leaning into the backseat and crossing my arms. “Because I didn’t even need to use manipulation to go out with you…” Daniel sighed again and mumbled under his breath. “Besides… it doesn’t work on you…” “What do you mean?” I asked while raising my eyebrow. “I’ve tried to use it on you, but nothing works, scent, hearing, touch, vision… None of it works on you for some reason.” Daniel admitted, as he sat in the driver’s seat and glanced back at me. “I think it’s because you’re resistant to vampire’s abilities, you might have had a history with genetic modification to achieve that though.” He explained so casually. “Modification… oh… those people up there had something like that.” I said as he drove off, yet I didn’t even ask him where we were going. “Not surprising, most hunters do, but it’s mostly for them to keep up with us, like they strengthen their muscles artificially, breed with the intention to be taller and stronger, more intelligent… but I’ve never met someone who was completely resistant to manipulation like that.” Daniel explained, although that meant he couldn’t use his ability on me, he didn’t look disappointed, probably because he already realized I liked him a lot. “So… I’m special?” I asked as if it was a compliment of sorts. “You sure are… in many ways.” Daniel chuckled a bit, I liked seeing him smile. “Where are we going by the way?” I finally asked him as I glanced outside. Then the scenery looked familiar again. “Your house, you can’t be staying out till late on a week day.” Daniel said as he parked the car outside my apartment. “Wait, you shouldn’t park here… my parent’s might be coming over to my place and if they see you…” I couldn’t even think what would happen to him. “I’m not scared of them as much as I am from you.” Daniel admitted, although I didn’t really think he was afraid of me. “What?” I questioned him. “Someone like you, that lives life so carelessly, follows her own will even though… I’m sorry to say you’re not the brightest…” Daniel sort of muttered the last part but I already knew I wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, I’ve heard it a million times before so I wasn’t offended or anything. “You’re someone worthy of being afraid off… and also to be loved…” As he said that he stretched out his hand towards mine and leaned in to kiss it. “I’m sorry about what you had to go through today…” He apologized with such sincerity it made me wonder what was going through his mind. “It’s not your fault you don’t need to… be sorry…” I said without thinking, it was the truth after all. “Even so… I’ll make sure it never happens again.” With that declaration from Daniel, I quietly headed back to my front door, I didn’t even ask what he meant by those words… It was a long day and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to find out… I spent my Saturday and Sunday as uneventful as possible, I just stayed at home and continuously mulled over everything that had happened before… And finally when I went to school on Monday. I was more than ready to go over to Jeca and confront her about everything that happened. To ask her a bunch of questions and find out the truth about everything… But Jeca wasn’t at school that day… Nor the next one… Nor the one after that, in fact since the last time I saw her, she never went to the university again… soon enough an investigation was launched, the police spoke to me briefly and I told them what I knew. It turns out her family was worried but didn’t know her whereabouts either, I got scolded by her family… for dragging their daughter into irresponsible things. Although it was the other way around, I couldn’t bring myself to argue with them… Because even though I wasn’t the person that made their daughter disappear, I was almost certain I was the cause of it… Only I didn’t want to admit it… I didn’t want that to be the case… “You seem to be in a bad mood…” Daniel remarked as he brushed aside the bangs off my forehead to reveal my face, I was feeling down and I assumed he was the reason for it. “Did you kill her? Jeca…” I asked him outright, we hadn’t seen each other from a week and I didn’t have the energy to text or call him to ask, but when we stood in front of each other I felt like I needed to find that answer out then and there. “And if I did… would you hate me for it?” Daniel asked me with a stern expression on his face, yet his unwavering eyes that used to drawn me in were now unexpectedly pushing me away all the same…
