Okay, I definitely wasn’t expecting this; Dylan. I went numb for a few seconds while he moved closer.
“Helen?” He asked drawing me out of my little trance.
“Yeah, Helen Ruben, Are…you…um, the one with my books?” I inquired trying hard not to stutter.
“Yeah, found it where I sat, wait…I think I know you-” f**k he remembered. I cursed under my breath at the thought of him recalling one of the most embarrassing moment in my life.
“You’re the same girl that-” wait for it…
“That bumped into me this morning without apologising” That totally had me frowning.
“I didn’t bumped into anyone” I quickly defended myself.
“Hell yeah you did, you almost knocked me off and before I turned you were gone-
“How did you know it was me then? You probably didn’t see the person properly-
“Of course I saw, I’ve seen you coming…I just didn’t expect you’d be walking into me-
“Look, I don’t have time for this. My friends are waiting for me” Now I am upset, Dylan brows furrowed probably in shock or confusion I couldn’t tell but I was certain he was surprised at my sudden outburst.
“Um, I see…here it is” He was just about to give it to me when I heard my name being called.
“Helen” I turned to hear the voice of Ashley Keith, bad luck everywhere I thought slightly rolling my eyes while I stared at her with disdain.
“What are you doing with him?” She sounded resentful while glaring at me and Dylan consecutively. Dylan scoffed and turned to her.
“Um, I think I have the right to be with whomsoever I chose to be with…after all, we are no longer together” Dylan’s expression was hard and cold while he glared back at Ashley who pretended not to be affected by his words but the hurt was written all over her face.
“Why her?” Ashley scoffed and I frowned.
“I said I can chose whosoever I wanna be with” Dylan reiterated and Ashley scoffed walking away in the skimpy floral gown and blue knee-length boot she wore to match the floral colour of her dress. Ashley Keith is the school beauty queen whose father is one of the school ambassador, she’s proud arrogant and bitchy. She was a girl about 150cm with fine slender legs that made her stand out in every cloth she wears. She’s envied by most girls for her long, straight golden blonde hair. She had a button nose with small round lips that fitted her heart shaped face perfectly, her porcelain skin looked expensive to maintain but she was rich anyway.
“You don’t seem to be in her good book” Dylan noted and I heaved a heavy sigh.
“She’s not a fan of the nerds especially my group” I explained while Dylan hard expression vanished to be replied with an amused look.
“Your group?” He questioned and I wish he’ll let me leave already.
“Yeah, Becky, Jenna and I…we are friends. Ashley isn’t a fan any of us” I replied flatly wanting to leave already.
“Can I have my books now?” I questioned and he nodded softly putting the books into my hand.
“Thanks” I replied in appreciation before turning and leaving to meet up to the girls.
“Where the f**k have you been?” Becky questioned with a frown on her face.
“Sorry, I was retrieving my books unfortunately I ran into the she-devil” I replied and the girls shared a confused look right before they exchanged knowing looks.
“Ashley” They declared almost at the same time and I nodded.
“I wish she’ll get out of our hair soon enough” Becky gritted harshly.
“We should head out for lunch, then we’ll finish up our classes” Jenna suggested before Becky could finish seething.
“What would you like to have?” Jenna asked taking my hand as she led me away while Becky had a murderous look on her face.
“Perhaps some hamburger and milkshake. Where’s Tyson by the way?” I asked the girls after noticing the absence of Becky’s new guy.
“He had lectures to attend” Jenna shrugged and Becky frowned.
“Why don’t you two like him, you keep giving me the creeps with those uncomfortable looks on your faces” Becky complained joining us as we started to walk our way towards the cafeteria.
“Becky, we do like him but…we thought it’s too soon, I mean you barely know him and you just broke up with Aiden, we just feel you should give it some time, more thought” I explained in a soft and low tone to avoid her getting irked by what I said.
“And that I think is the more reason I should be with him, I have to show Aiden what he’s missing-
“Are you been serious right now? it's not more than four days since you guys broke up" Jenna exclaimed in bewilderment.
"And he's got a new girlfriend, and why is mine such a big deal? Would you girls please stop talking about it?" I could sense the annoyance in Becky's voice so I meet Jenna's eyes sharing a knowing look with her.
"Sure Beck" We immediately reached an agreement when Jenna gave up. We arrived at the cafeteria some minutes later and as we sauntered in, we spot an empty table from a far, others were half filled and mostly filled by other students whose murmurs made nothing audible to make out.
"You girls go pick the table, I'll deal with the food orders, what are you getting Beck?" Jenna asked as we got closer to the empty table.
"Sure, I'm getting one cheeseburger and strewberry shake" Becky cheerily replied. Jenna nodded and headed for the food counter while we move to occupy the seats. We had settled when I noticed Becky's and eyes on someone, she seem pained but tried to hide the pain she had reflected with her look, I turned to look at whoever she was looking at and I realized it was her ex-boyfriend. It appears she was still in love with him. If she still love him that much, why would she even agree to go out with Tyson? I wish I could ask her but that wouldn't make things any easier so I decided to pretend I didn't notice her. Jenna came back few seconds after with two trays in one hand and one on the other. I wondered how she does that, well she used to work in a eat out but damn that was a great skill, balancing that three tray out was a really great skill.
"And here you go" She announced slowly and carefully placing down our lunch before she took her seat on one of the two empty chairs with us.
"Thanks" Beck and I said almost at the same time making Jenna smile. We started to bite on our foods and then I raised my head a minute to meet Dylan's eyes and I almost choked on my drink. Jenna immediately offered me an handkerchief which I took instantly to clean myself.
"Do you girls mind if I seat here with you? Most of the seats are taken" Dylan requested and my friends abruptly turned to me for approval. I cleared my throat and straightened up before answering him.
"Yeah sure...why not?" I smiled and right before he sat I saw the devil's table not far off. I groaned uncomfortably but not loud enough for Dylan to make out.
"Thanks" He muttered and took his seat next to mine. How could he choose this place of all places? I wondered but didn't dare to raise my head to meet his face.
"Um...Helen" Why was he doing this to me? I thought and squeeze my face up before I raised my head to his, then his devilishly handsome face developed into a broad smile.
"Are you free tonight?" Jenna practically spilled her drink by the question.
"No, I'm booked" I simply replied and I saw disappointment crested on his face immediately.
"No, she isn't" Jenna immediately put up giving me a fierce look and leaving my jaw hanging.
"Really?" Dylan asked with an hopeful look on his face.
"I-
"Why do you ask?" Jenna instantly cut me short.
"Um...I was hoping if she could go a friend's party with me tonight, Evens Brooke-
"That's Thomas cousin, she was also invited to the party, that's really good. You needn't worry...she'll be there" What? I throw Jenna a glare for making decisions for me but she just smiled in return.
"I'll be glad if you can make it Helen, can I come pick you?" Dylan asked and I sighed, this was it...what I had desperately wanted from him and now he's throwing to my face but I wasn't thrilled about it.
"No-
"Of course, I'm sure she'll be glad to" Becky joined in with a small smile on her lips. Now my friends are ganging up on me.
"Thanks Helen" Dylan smiled but I just turned down to my food and ignore the petulant stares of my friends.
