Caleb's Point of View
I watched as Kiara walked away with the nurse. "I'm going with them," My mom said as she stood up and walked after them.
"So, what's going on between you and Kiara?" My dad asked.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You too were holding hands, and you look like a lost puppy without her," He said as he looked at me.
"We were just holding hands. Kiara was a little shaken up," I said.
"Keep telling yourself that, son," My father said as he tapped my shoulder and then stood up. "I'm grabbing a coffee. Want one?"
"Ya, black is fine."
I watched as my father walked away and thought about what he said. Kiara and I have been holding hands a lot, and I have caught myself kissing her head a few times. She makes me happy, and I think about her randomly, but we could never be an item. She lives in Michigan, and I live in Texas.
Kiara's Point Of View
Sheryl ended up following us into Ava's room, and in typical Ava fashion, she was screaming bloody murder at the person who causes her pain. Ava has a high pain tolerance but hates to be uncomfortable, and clearly, labor was making her very uncomfortable.
"Ava chill out," I said as I walked in.
"Oh, thank God," Tyler said as he looked at me.
"Oh, don't tell me to chill out. You don't have wicked pains radiating through your body, and as for you," She said as she pointed at Tyler. "Don't oh thank God me."
I walked up to the bed and grabbed Ava's hand from Tyler, and said, "Ava, remember the time Liz and Deb pushed us down the hill, and my elbow landed on your nose?"
"Yes."
"Well, you got up and didn't hit anyone or scream even with blood dripping out of your nose. You just walked away and cleaned yourself up. So you need to put your big girl pants on and just deal with it," I said.
"It hurts, and it won't go away," She whined.
"You are having a baby," I whispered.
"Ya, I know."
Ava and I sat there in silence for a while as her contractions came and went. Then, finally, her temper slowed down, and she seemed to go back to normal. All she needed was a reality check.
Ava hates being stressed, in pain, or in a situation she can't control. Those situations bring out the worst in her, and tonight was no exception. She was most likely freaking out because Tyler wasn't home, and then knowing I had no clue where I was going wasn't helping her nerves, but it all worked out.
"So, how far along are you?" Sheryl asked.
"Last they checked, I was at an eight, and that was before they came and got you. They said they would recheck me in twenty. So anytime now."
Once Ava seemed okay, I got up from my spot to allow Tyler to sit down with Ava again.
"I'm sorry," She said to Tyler as he kissed her.
"It is okay, honey. You are in pain."
"I'm not in pain, just uncomfortable, but I was super stressed out." Bingo, I called it.
"I guess not being in pain is a good thing, but why were you stressed out?" He asked.
Ava explained through contractions exactly what I thought caused her to freak out. She was scared we would get lost, and she would have the baby without him.
When the nurse finally came in, Ava said she wanted to push, and the nurse checked her, and sure enough, the baby was ready to come out. As I began to walk out to give the new mom and dad privacy, Ava told Sheryl and me to stay.
I stood over in a corner while Sheryl went over Ava's other side. I watched as my best friend pushed for twenty minutes, and then I heard the most beautiful sound ever. The baby was crying.
"What is it?" Tyler and Ava said at the same time.
The doctor held up the baby and said, "A little girl. Would you like to cut the cord?" He asked Tyler.
Tyler let go of Ava's hand and grabbed the scissors, and cut the cord.
Even though I was in nursing school, I was not too fond of the labor and delivery department. Yes, I loved babies, but this was not my cup of tea.
I watched as the nurse cleaned the baby up and began to perform the Apgar score. When she handed the baby to Tyler, he kissed the little girl before handing her to Ava.
I walked over to them and looked at the beautiful little one, and said, "I am going to let the guys know the baby is here. I'll be back in a little bit."
"Okay. Kiara, thank you for being here," Ava said as she smiled at me. Ava knew how much I didn't like being in labor and delivery.
"No, thank you, Ava. I'll break the news to the guys. Do you guys need anything."
"Coffee. Black please," Tyler said, and I walked out of the room.
When I walked into the waiting room Caleb and Drew were talking and stopped when they noticed me.
"Everything okay in there?" Caleb said.
"Yea. They had a beautiful baby girl."
Drew quickly got up and was rushing past me when I yelled, "Room thirty-three."
"Thanks," He hollered back.
Caleb walked up to me and hugged me. "She made you stay, huh?"
"Ya, but it was worth it. She is a beautiful baby."
"Let's go see my niece."
As we began walking down the hall, I stopped and said, "Tyler asked for coffee."
After grabbing a bunch of coffees, we walked back to the room. The baby was screaming when we walked in, and poor Ava looked frazzled.
When she saw us walk in, she said, "She won't stop, and she won't latch."
I placed the two coffees I had in my hands and walked over to Ava. "Drew and Caleb, can you two go out in the hall for a moment."
I might not want to be a labor and delivery nurse, but I paid attention, so I didn't need any help when I had kids.
As the guys walked out, I said, "Pull out your boob and stimulate your n****e. This will make it easier for the baby to latch on."
I watched as she did what I told her to do and then said, "Now hold the baby and angle your n****e in. If you do it this way, it will give you a better latch."
As Ava did what I instructed, the baby tried to latch and then began to cry even more.
"May I?"
Ava handed me the baby, and I tried two more ways I had learned in school to get the baby to latch, but it didn't work, so I looked at the baby's mouth and noticed that she had a tongue tie and hit the call button.
"Why did you hit the button?" Tyler said with a panicked voice.
"Don't panic. She is fine. She has a tongue tie which could be causing the issues with her being able to latch."
When the nurse came in, I explained what was going on, and she told me she would get a syringe for them to feed her and the ped."
After the baby was examed by the doctor, she would have her tongue clipped later that day. Until then, Ava would need to pump and use the syringe to feed her. Then, as everything calmed down and we all held the baby, they announced her name. Skylar Grace.
Caleb and I left shortly after that we left, but I passed out on the way home.
