Chapter One
"Mother," Cassidy whispered as she looked at her mother with blue eyes, trying to keep tears from going down her checks. Her mother, a beautiful women with long white blonde hair and dark blue eyes, was passed out on her couch. One arm over her stomach and the other holding a empty bottle of sake. She hated the smell of alcohol, but she put the bottle on the table anyway, before covering her Mum with a blanket.
Opening her parent's bedroom, slightly, so that she wouldn't be seen. He was laying on top of another women, a pretty brown haired thing. She didn't know her name, but she heard her mother call the women as 'Jamir's w***e' and that's all she knew the women by. It wasn't hard to tell when she was here, Mother would start to drink and the sounds of lovemaking could be heard throughout the whole house.
She turned and walked to her brother's room, it wasn't like their parents would check on either of them. She was less then a sister figure to her brother, she more like his mother to her little brother, and they both knew it. Rhys had told her this once, but she told him to not say this in front of their parents, most importantly, not Jamir.
"Cass?"
"Rhys what are you doing? You should be asleep," she said to her brother. He looked at her with large dark blue eyes, he was sitting in front of her room, which was before his.
"Father is... I can hear them,' he told her, pulling his knees to his chest. Cassidy only sighed before the two went into his room, Rhys looking out of the window, before adding. "I don't like the way that women looks at me. It sends chills down my spin."
"She can't touch you. I won't let her," she told them putting her hands on her shoulders, why did she have to be the adult? "So there's no reason to fear her."
"I trust you, but Cass, I wish she wasn't here!"
"I know."
"She's ruined everything."
Cassidy only shock her head, she knew his pain. However, she also knew that they couldn't tell them what to do. If Jamir wanted to ruin his marriage, for brown haired bimbo, then she couldn't stop him. "You know as well as I do. That we can't tell father what to do, not even the council can."
"Can you stay with me tonight? Please?" he asked turning around to face his sister, tears gathering in his eyes. He knew that he wouldn't be able to get any sleep, not with her in the house.
Cassidy heisted before shaking her 'no'. "You know father doesn't want me to baby you. One day your going to have to take control of his army."
"I don't care! I just want someone with me. I don't want to be alone while she's here," Rhys said shaking his head, tears going down his check. "I won't be able to sleep knowing she's even near this house."
"Okay, I'll stay, but only for tonight."
Rhys didn't answer, instead just dragged his sister to his bed, hugging her. Cassidy lifted the sheets and crawled next to him. She didn't object as he snuggled up to her. She couldn't. She had done the same with her older brother and sister, when she was frightened as a child.
The last time they had done this, Jamir had lectured the two of them about how emotions made them weak, so they needed to abandon them. Personally, she never agreed to them. After all, those in the army wanted to protect something, or else they wouldn't brother.
The next morning, she didn't wake to the sun's rays, but to her brother's whimpers and father angry shouts. Without a second thought, she got out of her brother bed and stood in front of her father, hoping that he would start shouting at her and leave Rhys alone.
"What do you think your doing? You do not coddle your brother. He'll turn into a -"
"Jamir that's enough," Kylie told him before he could finish his sentence. She didn't care what would happen later, but she didn't need her 'husband' calling her son names.
"Do you want your son to turn into a faggot?" he snapped at her, looking at away from the two in front of them to look at his 'wife' of twenty years.
"That is quiet enough of that Jamir. You don't need to say such crude words in front of children," Kylie told them crossing her arms under her bosom. "There's no need for it. Rhys will do fine, after all we've got him the best teachers."
Jamir just snorted and left the room. Kylie's eyes softened as she looked at her children, Rhys was starting to learn how to fight, in defence of his village. While Cassidy was getting ready for marriage, at any moment her daughter could be taken away from her, after all she was in her thirteenth year.
"Why don't you two clean up? I'm going to visit your aunt today. You should come with me, she miss' you two."
"I can't mother. I have to go to lessons today," Cassidy told her looking at her pale feel. "But you and Rhys should get out of the house."
"You take your lessons everyday. Cass, sweetie, your going to wear yourself thin."
"I can't. I have to be the perfect lady."
"You can take a break. Besides, your teachers praise you highly."
"I can't. Please tell Auntie I said hello," Cassidy said. It was a tempting offer, but she had already tested her father's temper and wasn't going to push it. The last time she went, Jamir gave her a beating with a belt. "And please tell her, that I'll come to visit both her and Phoenix soon."
She backed out of Rhys' room and went to her own Taking off her nightgown, she looked around her closet for something to wear. She didn't want a maid, since it meant her father had more control over her. After all, the women would do what the one who was paying her wanted, not his child. Pulling a pale pink dress over her head, Jamir walked in.
"Your teacher has the flu. She just told housekeeper. You will continue your lessons tomorrow, once her replacement comes."
"I understand father," she said, but he had already left the room. If she wanted to, she would be able to catch to both her mother and brother, but she didn't need to upset them. She wasn't lying to her mother, but still, Kylie had enough things to worry about and she shouldn't be one of them.
She needed time to decide on what she was going to do. She already had a plan, she did it ever time her teachers were sick, pulling out a satchel from under her bed. She put books and her diary into it, along with a pocket watch. She was going to her hideaway, her own secret spot. She grabbed a few more items, before making her way to the kitchen to get breakfast. Heading out of the side door, she walked into the forest surrounding their home. It was a thirty minute walk, but she thought it was worth it.
When Cassidy arrived, she checked that no one was watching. When she was certain, she entered and walked over to sit under one of the trees. Once, when she was younger, she had runaway and had taken shelter in the forests. She had lasted three days before Jamir had found her and punished her for leaving. Needless to say, she had a difficult time moving for a few weeks.
She gently touched the bark of the familiar trees and found the marks she was looking for. She could never be too careful, so she had marked the path by cutting into the trees to make sure she was heading in the right direction. She had grown up in this forest, so she had never gotten lost before but it was best to not try her luck. She followed the trail until she found her spot.
A grove, surrounded by trees, but it was clear in one spot. At the right time of the year, when the flowers bloomed it was even more beautiful. But it was nearing the cold season, and the leaves were falling from the branches. Several stones were scattered and if one was quiet and listened, you could hear the near by river.
She walked over to a stone near the opposite side of the grove and say her satchel down. Sitting down and leaned against it, she pulled out one of her books, and started to read.
The peace last an hour, at the most. Twigs snapped and leaves crunches, snapped her away from her book. She careful put it away in her satchel, putting it over her head. She retreated to an extra wide tree and his behind it, waiting to see who was approaching.
Cassidy willed her heart to stop beating as a huge group of men came into view. They were wearing battle armour and she could se their swords, either on their backs or hips. "Today will be victories for the Hammond. We have the surprise tactic on our hands. We will struck the Mejia down."
Deciding not to hear any more, she started to back away. Stepping on a twig, she tensed looking to see if someone had spotted her, after all it obvious that she belonged to the noble Mejia line. When no one noticed her, she silently thanked whoever was up there, before turning and running back to her home village. She had to warn her father, everyone was in danger.
She fastened her pace , hoping to their before they did. She didn't slow down, not even when her chest started to burn from the lack of oxygen. It took fifteen minutes to make it to the gates, and another two to her entrance point. She didn't stop once she entered her garden, she ran to the meeting hall and banged on the door, until Jamari answer glaring at her.
"What is it? We're in t-"
"Father the Hammond are coming. I've seen them, they're going to attack in the next hour."
Jamari's blue eyes turned cold, before turning to the soldiers he was speaking to, they had been attacked a number of times over the years, and had lost many, but they had a drill and he needed to get as many as he could to safety. "Man, I want you to get ever women and child to the safe houses, along with anyone who can't fight."
Cassidy only looked at him, before slowly backing away. She was going to her aunts place, so that she can make sure that they were safe.
"Someone take Cassidy to the tower gates," he told them before she could leave. The tower gate? she thought looking at him, she knew what they were, everyone did, after all those who maned them were usually the first to die, unless the enemy didn't know about them. "She knows whose coming and how many, let her warn us when they come."
