Chapter 5: First Life – Regret (2)
***
In such a situation plenty of men or women would just lie down and go to sleep, not wanting to imagine what the next day would bring in these circumstances… However Cecil decided to take a look around the room he was given.
There was no rule that told him not to leave said room but he didn’t want to risk offending the man that took him in so soon after his arrival, so he decided to stay inside.
Looking around he’d never imagined to be spending the night in such a place. The room was warm, nothing like when he had to sleep on the streets or the nights where they would have no warmth at all, not even blankets. It was luxurious, there was a huge bed, a nightstand, a desk… all things he’d never had before. Not to mention the window to the room that allowed him to look outside at the night view. It was beautiful yet suffocating, since the only reason he was able to live in such luxury would be due to Alistar Cadmel.
Cecil didn’t know much about the person that took him in, and under dim light there was only so much of the man’s appearance that he could witness. However how the man looked was the least of his worries, more than anything he wanted to know what would happen from now on.
Would he have to work as a servant? Would he have to please his master in other ways? Would he have to do it to other people as well? There was no telling what they would make him do and that thought disgusted him…
‘It’s not like I long for freedom… but why do I start thinking I do now…’ Cecil wondered to himself. Now that he had his freedom taken away from him, he realized how much he wanted to be free. Laying down on the bed he looked around the room only to stop his eyes at a door with a strong wooden frame. It looked pretty and expensive like everything else there but he was yet to find out what stood behind that door.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Cecil was surprised and instantly stood up, taking several steps back while staring at the door, but nobody entered…
“Mr. Cecil… may I enter?” A woman’s voice sounded from the other side of the door.
“Yes.” Cecil replied as he calmed down his beating heart. ‘I thought it would be Alistar again…’
The woman entered the room, bringing a new set of clothes with her. She put them on the bed and turned to the man standing by the window. “My name is Beatrice, yours personal maid. Please call to me whenever you need anything.” She carefully bowed her head in front of the man.
“Personal… but why would I need something like that?” Cecil asked in clear confused, it made no sense for a servant to have another servant on their beck and call like this. Especially not if he was the other getting to boss someone around.
“Are you not satisfied with me sir?” Beatrice seemed a bit hurt by the male’s reaction. “I can arrange for another maid to take my place-”
“No, it’s not about that… I just don’t think I need a maid in the first place…” Cecil clarified. “I think you’re perfect so don’t look so sad…” He continued, the more he looked at the girl the more he was reminded of his little sister that was seven years younger than him. The maid seemed to be an older version of his sister. They had a lot of similarities, their hair and eyes especially…
“Please don’t say that to Mr. Cadmel… He’ll be sure to fire me if he hears it.” Beatrice said calmly as she smiled and took a large white shirt from the clothing and laid it on the bed. “Let’s get you dressed now sir.”
“Why would he fire you over this?” Cecil asked as he moved closer to the indifferent woman.
“Mr. Cadmel’s temper is short. If he finds out I made the slightest mistake it will be all over… so just as you said before I have to be perfect.” Beatrice explained as she began undressing the man in front of her.
“Wait, I’ll do it myself…” Cecil insisted.
“You may but I must make sure you bathe. The bath is prepared already.” Beatrice pointed to the other room.
‘So that’s what the other room was…’ Cecil thought to himself. “Why is it so important?” He asked, not that he didn’t know it was to prevent disease but he asked because he felt like the man that took him in had a particular obsession with cleaniness.
“Mr. Cadmel hates germs… and to him the human body is the most germ infested thing in the world. That’s why makes sure we keep everything clean and he never lays hands on his servants.” Beatrice explained, by the way she spoke she didn’t seem to be scared of the man, if anything she was very calm and collected.
“Really? He doesn’t touch his servants?” Cecil asked as he tilted his head to the side. ‘So what exactly is my purpose here?’ He wondered but also breathes a sigh of relief. Knowing the man wasn’t going to lay his hands on him was something that made him unbelievably happy.
“Yes, he actively avoids other people’s touch… and it’s not just the servants either.” Beatrice continued. “Nobleman, royalty, pets,… He refuses to touch anything with his bare hands. That’s why Mr. Cadmel always wears gloves.”
“Hm… I hadn’t noticed that…” Remarked Cecil, then yet it would have been difficult for him to see anything much less observe anything from the man he’d just met less than an hour ago…
