Olivia

1203 Words
Lucas left early the next morning for work. Shortly after arriving at his office, he called his mother. "Mom, I'm sorry I couldn't wait for breakfast. Something urgent came up, and I'll make it up to you." He waited for a moment before hanging up. Just then, Nat walked in, holding a file. "Mr. Lucas, regarding the annual fashion competition, our company doesn't stand a chance this season. Our design department is slacking behind. We need more talented designers." "What do you suggest we do now?" Lucas asked, frustration creeping into his tone. "Put up an advertisement on our website." "Sure thing, Mr. Lucas," Nat replied, turning to leave. "Any news about the girl from that night?" Lucas asked swiftly. "Nothing yet, sir," Nat replied. Lucas waved him away, lost in thought, reminiscing about that night. "Why is it so difficult to get you out of my head, O-l-i-v-i-a?" he whispered, stressing each letter of her name. Meanwhile, Olivia, now heavily pregnant with the stranger's child, sat at home. "I promise to keep you safe, my baby, no matter what it costs me," she said, rubbing her hands over her bump. A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. "Hang on." She opened the door to find her friend Laura. "Hey, baby girl," Laura said, concern etched on her face. "You look pale. Have you been thinking too much lately?" Olivia smiled weakly. "Come here, sit down," Laura urged. "I don't like seeing you worry so much. I'm here for you, my friend. I'll help you out, okay? You’re not alone. Please stop worrying.” Olivia smiled weakly. "Thank you so much, Laura. I'm grateful, but I still need to get a job. I can't let everything be on you. You've already done too much for me, taking me in is more than enough." Laura's expression softened. "It's alright, Olivia. I submitted your designs and resume online. Two remarkable companies are hiring, so I applied on your behalf. Let's hope you get a call from one of them." Olivia's face brightened. "You did? Thank you so much, Laura. What could I possibly do without you, my friend?" Her voice trembled with emotions. The two friends hugged, their moment interrupted by Olivia's phone beeping. Olivia checked her email, her eyes widening in excitement. "I just got an email from Yale's Group of Company! My design is outstanding, and with my permission, they'd love to have me on their design team!" Both women screamed in excitement, Laura laughing and cautioning, "Easy, don't hurt the baby!" Olivia gently touched her bump, laughing. "This is amazing! My luck is finally changing.” “We should celebrate this good news,” Olivia said. “I’ve been indoors for too long; we should go out." “Great idea, Olivia, but first, we have to respond to that email,” Laura replied. “You know you can’t go back home just yet. Your parents don’t want you back, and you’re still pregnant." Olivia’s face fell on hearing her friend’s words. “You’re right, Laura. I guess I should give them my terms. Working from home will be fine. Maybe until after the baby is born." Laura smiled. “This is fine, Olivia. So, after you respond to the email, go get dressed. We’re going out tonight, baby girl!” Laura said, snapping her fingers in the air in excitement. Meanwhile, Lucas went drinking with his childhood friend Seth in a club, complaining about the girl from that fateful night. “Bro, what happened to you? What has that lady done to you? This isn’t you, c’mon. Pull yourself together and move on. Yvonne has always loved you, and you know it; why not give her a chance?” Seth asked, getting bored of Lucas’s talk about Olivia. “Drop it already,” Lucas said with a wave. “You know I don’t love her." “But she loves you; why not give it a try? You might get to love her in the future,” Seth persisted. “I need you to do something for me,” Lucas said, drowning in his vodka. “Find out what happened that night. Who spiked my drink? Gather all the information you can from that night. I can’t just let it go." “Alright,” Seth said, stopping him from taking another drink. “You’ve had enough, Lucas; let’s go home." “I’m not done,” Lucas replied. “You’re drunk already. You shouldn’t be doing this over a lady,” Seth cautioned. “You can go; I’ll head back later. I’ll get Nat to come pick me up,” Lucas said drunkenly. “I can’t leave you here alone, alright?” Seth took out Lucas’s phone and dialed Nat’s number. “Get over here quickly; Lucas is drunk.” He said to Nat and dropped the call. “Nat is on his way. I’ll wait here with you until he comes,” Seth assured. Lucas didn’t respond; his head fell on the table. “Don’t worry about him; he’s safe with me,” Seth turned around sharply to see the stunning figure of Yvonne. “Yvonne?” Seth stood up to hug her. “It’s been a while." On hearing this, Lucas lifted his head. “What are you doing here?” “It’s okay, Lucas; I’ll take you home,” she said, smiling. “Leave immediately,” Lucas growled. “She’ll take care of you till Nat gets here, so chill,” Seth reassured. Lucas couldn’t say another word, so he dropped his head slowly on the table and slept. The beeping sound from his phone jolted Lucas awake the next morning. Realizing he'd overslept, he quickly got out of bed and prepared for work. He grabbed his phone and dialed Nat's number. "Come to my room immediately," Lucas said, before ending the call. Moments later, a knock on the door broke the silence. "Come in," Lucas called out. Nat entered, his calm demeanor a stark contrast to Lucas's rushed morning. "Good morning, Mr. Lucas," Nat said. "What happened last night?" Lucas asked, his brow furrowed. "Nothing significant, sir. Mr. Seth called me to pick you up, and I did. You were already asleep by the time I arrived," Nat replied. "And Yvonne?" Lucas pressed. "She left with Mr. Seth," Nat answered. Lucas rubbed his temples. "Get the car ready; I'll be down shortly." Upon arriving at the office, Lucas spotted Yvonne already seated. She rushed to him, beaming. "Oh, baby, last night was amazing! I had so much fun," she exclaimed. Lucas's expression turned incredulous. "What are you talking about? Are you stalking me now?" His voice remained firm and calm. Yvonne's smile faltered for a moment before she recovered. "Oh, you don't remember? That's alright, baby; your secret is safe with me." Lucas's tone turned icy. "Stop this. Don't overstep. I have work to do. If you have nothing else to say, please leave." He strode past her to his chair and addressed Nat, who lingered by the door. "Nat, get my secretary here immediately." Nat nodded. "Alright." As Nat turned to leave, Lucas added, "And don't forget to escort her out. It's going to be a long day.”
