Chapter Nine

Drake leaned forward, pressing a button on the panel of the elevator wall.  “Go take care of that and I’ll meet you in the lobby.”  He said watching Owen closely. Abby nodded as she looked between both men nervously. Owen was fighting with his demon, his demon viewed the wolf as his, and it was itching to claim the girl next to him.  He was trying not to breathe in the scent of her.  That quick spark of lust that had perfumed the air as Drake had brushed his hand against hers was testing his limits. When her body brushed against him, he had a moment where he wanted to take her in his arms.  Spin her so she was pinned against Drake’s body and take her right then.  Blood, body, it didn’t matter which way he took her at that moment. He just knew that she would be his. The elevator dinged as they reached the floor Andrew worked on and Abby stepped forward; he let out a shaking breath as he watched her go and then closed his eyes, trying to shake off his need.  The doors slid shut and he heard Drake press the emergency stop button; he felt a soothing warm hand clasp around the back of his neck, pulling him to face the wolf.   “Get it under control, Owen.”  Drake all but growled in his ear.  “You control the demon, not the other way around.” Owen nodded, taking a deep breath, he let the scent of Drake fill his lungs.  It was enough to steady his racing thoughts.   “How am I supposed to work with her?”  He asked, his voice filled with desperation.   *** “We will figure it out, I’ll spend more time with you.  You’ll feed more often, you can’t hurt her Owen.” Drake told his friend, he thought again about telling him about Abby being his mate but shook his head.  He still needed to figure out things before he did that. Best to wait. “You’ll head to the crypt while we are gone and get yourself under control,”  Drake said looking into familiar violet eyes, Owen nodded at him. “I’ll get it under control.”  He said nodding and stepping back. “Make sure she eats well.”  He smirked at the wolf. “You don’t need to worry about that,” Drake said as he let go of the back of his lover’s neck.  He leaned over pressing the button on the elevator so it would resume its course. Leaning back, looking at his lover; Owen looked better, more in control.  *** Abby made her way down the long corridor, stopping outside of an office with Andrew Harris’ name and title on it.  She tapped her knuckles against the frosted glass door and waited. And waited, she brought up her hand again to knock when the door was pushed open.  She jumped back as Andrew greeted her, “How can I help you, Abby?” He asked. “I need to get a name badge and Drake sent me to you.”  She said smiling. “He sent you to me?”  Andrew asked, rolling his eyes.  “He should have just come himself.”  He grumbled. “Why would he come to you for my name badge?”  She smirked, tilting her head to the side. If she didn’t know any better she would think Andrew had a crush on one of his bosses. The tips of his ears turned red and he let out a frustrated sigh, “Follow me.”  He said walking past her, “Have you completed your new hire paperwork?”   Abby nodded when he looked over at her, “Good, get it back to me quickly.”   “I’ll get it to you after lunch.”  She said as they walked down the brightly lit corridor. “No, the sooner the better.”  He said frowning at her. “Drake is waiting for me in the lobby, he wants me to join him for lunch.”  She said shrugging her shoulders as she followed him towards a desk set up with a computer and a fancy digital camera. Andrew turned to face her, “Why would he take you to lunch?”  He asked, clearly agitated. “Why are you asking me?”  She countered, “I don’t understand why you’re getting upset.” He held up a camera, “Smile.”  Andrew said, barely giving her a chance to do so before he snapped her picture.  He plugged the camera into a cord linking it with the computer, then he uploaded and entered in her information.  He turned the screen towards her, “Is everything correct?” He asked, still angry. “Yes it is, thank you for doing this.”  She said as he turned the screen back to face him and the printer at the side of the room buzzed to life. “It’s part of my job.”  He said before standing and making his way to the printer.   He handed her a name badge, “Don’t lose this if you do, let me know.”  He said handing her a lanyard before walking off. “Thank you, Andrew.”  She called to his retreating form. He waved, not even bothering to turn around as he walked back towards his office. Abby smiled down at the name badge as she looked at her smiling face on the small plastic rectangle.  It felt official seeing her name and her face on the badge; she threaded the lanyard through the small hole at the top and looped it around her neck.  She walked towards the elevators with a happy bounce in her step.   *** Drake leaned his hip against the receptionist’s desk, Melissa was prattling on at him as he played with his phone.  The blonde was beautiful, but she held no interest for him. He and Owen didn’t like to sleep with employees. That typically ended badly. Neither man was interested in workplace drama and sleeping with one of their employees would open up that can of worms.  With Abby, though, he was willing to take that chance. They both were, he smirked as he played with his phone. Melissa was still talking to him, he had made it clear to her before that it would never happen.  Some women just never listened, he looked up at the dinge of the elevator as her smell drifted over to him. Drake tucked his phone into his back pocket and stood up straight, “Hey you,” he said with a smile, “Ready to grab so lunch?”   “I am,”  Abby smiled at him ready to grab some lunch, her stomach grumbling making her cheeks flush. “I know just the place, it isn’t far.  We can walk.”  He said leading her towards the front door, his hand resting on the small of her back as they made small talk. Melissa looked between the new girl and Drake. She fumed as she watched the two of them walk away together.
