Everybody stood as they proceeded slowly down the centre side by side and then followed in a procession.
Sita, seeing Wilfrid Blunt thrust himself in front of several people so that he could walk as near to the Nizam as possible, thought that he was not only very pushy but bad-mannered.
Then, as she longed to tell him to behave properly, Mr. Barnes whispered in her ear,
“Come with me. I know you want to see the elephants and I will take you to a good vantage point.”
She smiled at him and he took her through a side passage that led them onto the portico with its huge columns by a different entrance from the centre door that was being used by the Resident and the Nizam.
