Chapter SixSita awoke early despite the fact that she had been late going to bed.
There had been so much excitement in the Residency when she was brought back in a carriage by the Commanding Officer from the Barracks that she found herself the centre of attention in a way that she had never been before.
Not only did the Resident want to talk to her, but her uncle had a great deal to say and was simply furious that any man who called himself an Englishman could behave in such an appalling way.
She did as her friend had told her and only said that she had managed to escape from her prison and walked to the barracks, which they considered in itself an achievement.
“It’s a long way and you must have been very frightened,” Mr. Barnes said admiringly. “It was certainly very brave of you.”
