Ch 26 - Jealous

1147 Words
Emily stared at the clock and waited for another half an hour, waiting for the work to be over. She wanted to go over to Oliver’s place as soon as she could. Despite seeing him in the morning, she wanted to be with him as soon as she could. She tried to calm herself but it was of no use. You might hurt yourself, Emily. Don’t get too attached to him. You know it’s nothing permanent. Emily asked herself, but who was she kidding? It was going to be difficult when their arrangement would be over, she knew. She drove straight to Oliver’s apartment after work and he met her in the lobby to receive her. He kissed her on the lips and Emily pushed him away lightly, while smiling. They reached the apartment and when the doors opened, they walked in together. Emily observed that he had already made preparations for the movie while she was on her way over. “You really want to see that movie,” Emily said with a laugh, and he sidled up close to her. “Yeah, unless you have something better in mind,” he whispered in her ear and she chuckled and bit her lip. “We have plenty of time to do that, don’t worry,” she said and threw her purse on the couch while walking towards the water purifier. As she poured the water, Oliver came close to her with a frown on his face. “Just wanted to ask, and if you’re not comfortable, don’t tell me. But I want to know what happened yesterday to your mother? You look troubled because of it,” Oliver asked, and Emily took a huge gulp of water. She nodded. “I want to tell you everything.” Oliver nodded and said, “Please do, because I know it is bothering you.” Emily put the glass down and took him to the couch and sat with him. “My dad has sent divorce papers to my mother. He wants to divorce,” Emily said, and saw Oliver’s eyes widen in shock. “What?” He said with a frown. “But everything seemed fine between them.” “Yeah, it’s complicated. He’s into someone else.” Oliver sat back and heaved out a sigh. “God! That must be difficult for all of you.” “Yes, yes it is. Mom’s devastated.” Emily said and decided to keep her father’s wrongdoings to herself. Nobody needed to know how her father had kept humiliating her mother like that. “I just wish it was over soon and we will get out of this unscathed,” Emily said, and Oliver pulled her into his arms. “Don’t worry, you will. You’re stronger than you think, Emily,” he said, and kissed the top of her head as she rested her head on his chest. “Do you really think so? I feel so tired. Being with you is the only thing that makes me forget all my problems,” she confessed, and wondered if he would be irritated by her. “I am glad I am of help and I will be by your side as long as you need me,” Oliver said, squeezing her, and she nodded. They stayed on each other for a while and then decided to change the mood by watching the movie they were planning to watch. “We can have dinner after the movie,” Emily said, and he nodded. Oliver prepared the popcorn quickly and then sat beside her on the couch. The movie started and they were halfway through when Emily’s phone rang. Oliver gestured for her to pick up and she reluctantly got up but remembered that it could be her mother, so she quickly went for it. Seeing Ramyond’s name, Emily frowned in curiosity. She glanced at the time on her phone and wondered what was up with him. “It’s Raymond,” Emily said to Oliver and picked up the call. “Hey, Raymond, what’s up?” She asked. “Hey, Emily. Nothing I called to remind you to talk with Oliver about the deal I mentioned earlier,” he said, and Emily’s eyebrows shot up. She glanced at Oliver, who was glowering while listening to her call. “Oh, yeah, I remember. I will talk to him, don’t worry,” she said, assuring him, but heard him chuckle. “Yeah, I want it done as fast as we can. You know the proceedings take time,” Raymond said, and Emily nodded. “No, don’t worry. I will discuss this with him as soon as possible,” Emily said. “OK thanks then. Bye,” Raymond said. “Bye,” Emily said and hung up. She turned to look at Oliver, who had a deep frown etched on his face. “Does he not know what time it is? Why was he calling?” Oliver exclaimed, and Emily blinked. “He just wanted to remind me, that’s it,” she said, and sat beside him. “Why did you even receive his call? You should have called him back in the morning.” He was angry with Emily. “Oliver, you’re getting worked up over nothing. It was just a call.” “Then it could have been in the morning in decent hours,” he said, and Emily frowned. “What do you mean? I talked right in front of you. Did you hear anything indecent?” She asked and felt her anger rising up as well. She had known that Oliver always got irritated with Raymond interacting with her but this was way out of line. She was working with Raymond and this was normal, but Oliver was overreacting. “But he called after work. Next, he will be asking you to meet after work and then what not?” He said, standing up and Emily stood up as well. “What are you suggesting? That if he asks me to meet him after work, would I go? Of course, I wouldn’t. I know where to draw the line,” Emily exclaimed and wondered what had gotten into him all of a sudden. “Then you shouldn’t have responded to him at this time,” he said, and Emily pressed her lips in a thin line. “What do you want, Oliver?” She asked and waited for his reply. When he didn’t reply to her and continued to look away, she got up, picking up her purse. “You know what, I am leaving. I will talk to you when you’re in your senses,” she said, and walked out of his apartment, leaving him staring at her back. “I am in my senses,” he shouted at her back, but Emily was too angry to reply to him and left.
