Dressed only in his boxers and undershirt, Jamie leaves his room and tiptoes across the hall. He knocks on Thad’s door and waits. After what seems like forever, he knocks again. He’s about to knock a third time when he hears the door unlock. It eases open a crack.
Thad blinks in the bright hallway light. Behind him, his room is dark. “Jamie?” He rubs his eyes and yawns. “Jeez, what time is it?”
“Let me in.” Jamie doesn’t wait for a reply, just pushes past his friend into the room. With both hands out in front of him, he feels his way to the edge of the bed. “Were you sleeping?”
Thad closes the door behind him, extinguishing the light from the hall. “No.” When Jamie clicks on the bedside lamp, Thad covers his eyes. “Yes, of course I was. What are you doing here at this hour?”
