The amount of blood, sweat and tears invested on Abel's up coming eighteenth birthday next week sky rockets off the roof.
Everyone's been busy with the preparations and I wasn't an exception.
The venue's already been chosen, appetizers and the main course's already taken care off and the guests should be receiving their invitations right about now.
It's been a hectic week and I've often found myself within the Parkers territory helping out.
I can already tell this celebration's going to be the talk of the city very soon.
"Elka, sweetie?" Mrs Parker's head peaks from her kitchen frame with a phone against her ear. " Could you do me a favor please? It's about Abel's cake. I don't think I'll have time to check on it myself. Go there on behalf of me mhh?"
I give Mrs Parker a smile, setting the magazine down. She asked me to pick a color best suited for a young werewolf about to meet his mate. I've already gone through half of the pages.
"I knew I could count on you." Gleams the lady. "I'll bring Abel down."
Widening my eyes, I quickly shake my head objection. "No it's fine auntie. I mean, it's still five in the morning. He should have his rest."
I've only been here for an hour. So it means Mrs Parker had called me here at exactly four in the morning. Not that I minded. It's a usually phenomena since it's Abel. She never made me come this early during his prior birthdays preparation though.
But then again. This year's special.
She purses her lips foward in thought, staring at the stair case leading up to the second floor as I slip my hoodie on. "Well, in that case. Can you drive?"
"No."
She blinks. "Oh god. Are you sure you'll be alright sweetie?"
"I'll be fine." I assure her. "It's the bakery you mentioned last time right?"
She nods her head.
"I'll get going."
Magic Cake Shop's a growing business known to be the most popular bakery in the city. It's a thirty minute ride by bus from the Parkers. Before I left, Abel's mother handed me some cash for the bus fair despite my protest. Not only that, she also added in some pocket money and said that I should treat myself for stepping in for her.
Personally, I don't think three hundred dollars should be called pocket money though.
The little bell above me chimes with my entrance. A strong wift of alluring sugar and cinnamon fills my nostrils as I finally step in. You'd expect a bright, colorful scheme to house such delicious desserts. But for this case, it's different.
The place is neat, adorned by dark walls and a clean white ceiling. The decorations are simple, but the frames are still able to accentuate the beauty of the shop. Contrast to it's interior, the cupcakes are colored in the most lively shade of rainbow. The dark background works perfect to pop their features out.
After admiring the place, I finally head towards the counter to proceed for what I'm here for.
"Yes, miss how can I help you?"
"I'm here to check on the order by Mrs Parker."
So far, nothing seems to be out of place. They made me go over the cake's design one last time before they can start baking next week and I pretty much just make a few twinks here and there.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't surprised when they said Mrs Parker aimed for an eight feet long cake.
First thing the came to mind is how on earth they'd be able to deliver it to the venue without having it tumble down like a withered petal.
Twenty minutes and a cupcake later, I thank the staff and make my way outside. I could barely catch a wink last night. Mom called and said my youngest brother was admitted to the hospital due to food poisoning. So I stayed up all night because of that.
I feel lethargic.
"Penny for your thoughts?"
Like a shattering glass, the voice cuts through the barriers of my thoughts and lures my attention towards the familiar voice. Daron.
I wonder what's he doing here.
"Are you okay?" He asks with a sadden smile, noticing the exhausted expression contouring my face. I probably look like a panda with this dark circles below my eyes.
I'm perfectly fine. It's my brother that's not. But I'll worry about that later.
I let out a chuckle, facing him with a playful glint in my eyes. " I'm okay. You on the other hand have some explaining to do."
First his face twists up with what appears to be confusion. But he eventually catches on.
"Ah that." He brings a hand up to nervously rub the back of his neck. "I just..you know.. You're always hanging out with Abel and he doesn't want me getting close to you. So um..yeah."
"You avoided me because of that?"
"Pretty much." He shrugs, diverting his attention towards the building behind me. " Don't wanna get on his nerves anymore. Anyway. What are you doing here?"
"Mrs Parker made do a few errands."
He nods his head in understanding. "Ah. Abel's birthday right?"
"You remembered."
"Actually, I received an invitation."
Well, that's surprising.
"I'm wondering if I should attend it or not." He mumbles but it's enough for me to hear. "I don't think my presence will be needed. I'll just be a bothersome."
"You should." I tell him. "And besides. A lot of our classmates going so you should to."
My phone rings against my pocket. I excuse myself from Daron before pressing the phone against my ear without looking at the caller.
"Hello?"
"Where are you?"
It's Abel. And for a person whose wake up time should be about now, he sounds more angry rather than sleepy.
"I'm on my way back to your house. Just stopped by some place to check up on something."
Multiple bleeps follow suit. I draw the phone away only to see he hang up on me.
Wow.
So bold of him ey?
"Are you going now?"
I nod my head and let out an exasperated sigh. "He's gotten clingier than a koala. It's almost annoying." It's a shame we have to end our conversation here. "I'll see you at the party?"
He smiles. "I'll be there."
