She reached down and picked up the phone and answered it. “Hello, this is Danni,” she said into the receiver and that was when the lights flicked on inside of her brain and she realized that she’d been tricked. It was the Fourth of July. What was she thinking? There was no one at the school and there was no way that they were going to need a question answered. She stared at the wall, wide-eyed and she knew that there was no way that she could have been that foolish. She’d gotten soft and she’d gotten sloppy. Her laziness had just cost her everything and she knew that on the other end of this line was a desperate man who was trying his hardest to get in touch with her. She cringed at her own stupidity and knew that she was going to be kicking herself for days for this kind of a slip up. Ho
