Chapter 3- A gift

2908 Words
Mia I left the hospital after checking with Jen’s doctor. Jamie was able to produce the right amount of money to have Jen on their priority list, but I had to put more so they could continue the process. They told me I should be ready because they would soon proceed with the operation once the kidney was available. Realizing I hadn’t eaten anything besides coffee and apple, I decided to go to a burger diner shack near the hospital. It’s only five in the afternoon, and I’d be meeting Rizza in her apartment to get ready for my talk with Mr. Polanski at six. “Hi, Mia!” Jay greeted. Jamie’s younger brother and a childhood friend, two years younger than me. He was working at the chain and currently on duty. “Jay! Please give me the usual but no milkshake this time,” I told him at the counter. I didn’t want any milk in my body as nervousness was already eating me alive. “Gotcha!” he said. I smiled before I left the counter and found myself a chair. Luckily the diner wasn’t busy, and there were empty chairs and tables around. I was busy on my phone when I heard a loud thud in front of the entrance door. An older woman was lying on the floor unconsciously. I quickly got up and check on her. I turned her over and found it wasn’t just a woman. It was Mrs. Griffley. Jay and Jamie’s grandma! Kneeling, I shook her stiff body and recognized she seemed not breathing, “s**t,” I mumbled. People inside had started to gather around. “Mrs. Griffley! Mrs. Griffley!” I shook her, and then Jay came to my side. “What happened?!” He asked frantically, seeing his grandma on the floor. “I saw her fell!” I said before starting to feel the pulse. Nothing. I knew I needed to act quickly. She was already lying on her back, so I checked her airway. I took a deep breath before starting the chest compression. Jay was shocked, crouching on my side. I counted thirty before giving her rescue breaths. I heard people calling 911. I gave her another compression when I felt someone kneeled next to me. “This, follow  the steps.” The deep man’s voice calmly said to me. I looked at him, and the first thing that I noticed was his bushy dark brows and light blue eyes. “Miss!” he called out.  I was dumbfounded looking at him. I composed myself back, and I was already holding an AED. I learned how to use it since I got some basic training at work. I started opening the device while Mr. Bushy brows unbuttoned Mrs. Griffley’s shirt. I took out the items, patched the pads on to her, and pressed the power, Pressing the flashing button “Move away!” I said as I spread my arms wide, accidentally hitting Mr. Bushy brows hard chest. He glowered at me. Jay, on the other hand, was still puzzled. I saw Mrs. Griffly’s body jerked, then the machine analyzed and detected a heartbeat. Then we heard a short grunt. It was from Mrs. Griffley. Jay finally composed himself and crawled towards his grandma. “Granny!” he cried, hugging the puzzled old lady. People were rejoicing, and I heard faint claps around us. “What happened?” Mrs. Griffley asked. But before we could answer, the Medical personnel came in a rush and checked Mrs. Griffley. They understood the measure we had done and thanked the guy and me kneeling next to me. They put her on the gurney and brought her outside to the ambulance car. Jay went with them. My legs were numb as the adrenaline slowly accumulated my whole body. I was still kneeling and shocked. “Miss?” said the voice, and a hand showed in front of my face. I grabbed it as I slowly got up. I wobbled as I clung to his chest and looked up at him. He must be over six feet as I nudged my head up to see his face closer. “Are you okay?” he asked as I ogled his face. “I…I’m okay… that was dope,” I mumbled as I composed myself. Taking off my hand on his chest. I saw his mouth and eyes grinned wide. “You did a great job,” he said, “Thanks to you,” I whispered, averting my eyes away from him. “Mia! You're a hero! Thank you!” Tim, one of the crews at the counter, praised me. The business resumed right away. I turned my head, “That was nothing…I hope Mrs. Griffley would be alright, Tim.” “Your food is ready,” Tim said, “I’ll take it away, Tim,” I said as I walked towards the counter, leaving the man. Tim packed it quickly and gave it to me. “That’s on the house,” he said, “Thanks, Tim. I got to go and check Jay. They must be worried,” I said before dashing away from the scene. I hailed a cab and gave Rizza’s address. As I traveled, I called Jen’s number and told her what happened. “I know sis, Jamie rushed to go downstairs after receiving the call from Jay. I hope she’s okay,” Jen said, “Thank you, Mia. Jamie would be grateful to know it was you who saved Granny,” she added. “I know! I’m glad that I was there, though someone helped me, I actually feel sorry for leaving him at the diner. I did thank him, but my mind was dazed. All I could think of was my burger and fries,” I shamelessly admitted. I was hungry and petrified. Plus, with those look I got from him and his mesmerizing eyes together with his bushy brows I envied, my mind went into a haze, “I know you when you’re hungry.” Jen sniggered, “Well, I got to eat this soon as I reached Rizza’s place. I shall see you tomorrow, Sis. I love you. Please update me about Mrs. Griffley.” I said, “I love and enjoy your night. Please take care, yes?” “I will…” I said, making my eyes glistened. ‘I will do anything for you, Jen’ Not long after, I arrived at Rizza’s apartment. “Lady, how are you?” Rizza greeted me from the door. I went in with my backpack containing my clothes and stuff plus the paper bag with a burger. “I’m good, I was supposed to come early, but something happened at the diner,” I said, sitting down at her breakfast counter, “I hope you won’t mind me eating this,” I added, “Oh, no worries, tell me what happened,” Rizza asked, sitting next to me, “Oh, yeah, I’m sorry, I was supposed to eat this at the diner. I can share it with you, this…” I said, moving the box of chips, feeling bad not bringing anything for her. “Don’t mind it, just had my salad just before you arrived,” she said, snatching some chips on my plate, I glanced at my watch. It was only six in the evening. We still have plenty of time, since the meeting would be at nine in the evening. I told Rizza what happened. “Wow, woman, You’re a savior,” She astonishingly said, “And who’s that bushy brow man?” “I don’t know, well, He’s really good looking,” I said, as I bite my burger, I wished I learned his name. His demeanor told me something different. His eyes made my thoughts melt for milliseconds. “By the way, woman, are you really determine to do whatever he asked?” Rizza said, I was taken aback; I knew what she meant. I knew I couldn’t stomach myself if ever I was asked to sell my body. The amount I’d be borrowing was large but not as worth it as myself. I had no prior experience at all. At my age of twenty, making out was the boldest thing I had ever done with my dates, plus the sexy scene at drama school. “I am. Jen is far more important to me. I just wish I had other choices, I would’ve sold the house, but I couldn’t. We still have pending loans on the bank to pay,” I told her. We have a house, but it was given as collateral for the loans we had years ago. “I wish you have another choice, 300k grand is too big, but Jen’s life is at stake... You are such a good sister,” Rizza said, side hugging me. I hugged her back. “Yeah, thank you...” I said it would only be a night, and tomorrow it will be over. It will be over as I start my day anew. Rizza and I prepared ourselves. She would be bartending as I would talk to Mr. Polanski. I chose to dress presentably. I chose a body con short black dress with a long fitted sleeve in a mini mesh that stops above my knee, accentuating my curves nicely. I partnered it with four-inch black stilettos. My hair was loose down, pinning a butterfly clip on the side. I checked my make-up. I chose a simple nude color enough to give my face a life. The other door opened. Rizza was on her usual get-up of miniskirt and body con shirt and boots. “Let’s go, lady,” she said.   Holding my clutch, I heaved a deep breath before going out her door. We were welcomed by a loud booming sound of the bass upon entering the bar. I just found out it was the opening of Mr. Polanski's new high-end party club. The people were already partying and dancing on the dance floor as Rizza and I made our way near the back office where the crew put their stuff. I was dodging and ducking my way in as Rizza led the way, holding my one hand. When we reached the open place, Rizza pointed me to the hallway where Mr. Polanski was located. She talked to the bouncer and introduced me. Telling I have an appointment with Mr. Polanski in the next 15 minutes. The guy nodded as I followed Rizza at the counter. She left me for a minute as I sat at the stool bar. She came out and gave a shot of booze. I was reluctantly taking it, but I figured it out that my body needed a push. I chugged it in a go. “Thank you!” I said loudly at her “You're welcome, and Good luck!” Rizza shouted back as she started her shift. I still had minutes ago, so I decided to turn my seat around and watched people dancing to their heart's content. I could’ve imagined myself and Jen dancing there if only everything were doing well when life seemed perfect like it was months ago. Jen and I lived for each other, not knowing our mom, although I could still remember her lovely face. Clutching the necklace she gave me when I was five years old, faint memories of her, Jen, and my dad lingered in my head. Jen and I once talked about her, and all she could say was she remembered was mom weeping and crying as we left our old house that night. My train of thoughts was halted as the bouncer walked towards me and whispered, “Mr. Polanski is available now. You can come in,” he said. I nodded. I looked at Rizza, who was looking at me in worry. I smiled sadly at her before following the guy to the dimmed hallway. He knocked on the door and opened it for me. I saw the tall, middle-aged guy in his black pants and white shirt with a suspender. His fedora hat was on his head with tobacco on his right hand. He was standing, facing his table as if he was fixing something. “Mr. Polanksi, she’s here,” said the bouncer “You can leave us now,” the man replied. He then looked at me and left, closing the door behind me. Mr. Polanski then turned around. His eyes gaped wide for some unknown reason, making me furrowed. “So… you’re Mia Ryans…” he said, looking puzzled. “Yes, sir…” I said. My hands were trembling as I looked into his deep blue eyes. He smugly smiled at me before walking around and sat on his swivel chair. He eyed me once again from head to foot, huffing his tobacco, “How much do you need again?” “fifty grand, sir…” I said, still standing in front of him. “That’s a lot, my love. How would you be able to pay me” he scrutinizingly asked, narrowing his eyes. “I could work for your bar at night, after my work at the studio, I…I just need it for my sister…” I pleaded, His eyes then looked at the necklace I was wearing, there was silence, then I heard him heaved a deep breath, “How much worth is that necklace?” he asked, baffling me. Why did he ask me about the necklace? I knew it has a worth, but I couldn’t just sell it away. I looked down and held its gold pendant, “A lot sir, our mom gave this to my sister and me, but I can’t sell this…” I said, “It’s the only memory I had of her…” I added. I saw him nodded, and tapping his lit tobacco on the ashtray, killing its light. Leaning forward as he rested his elbow on the desk, he asked once again, “Tell me, Are you willing to sell yourself for your sister?” I nodded. “I’ll do anything for her…” I said, looking at him intently. He then smiled. He leaned back to his chair and opened his drawer, bringing a stack of cash, and placed it on the table. “That’s fifty grand, but for a night with someone that I know, a good friend of mine who might be willing to spend a passionate night with an inexperienced woman.” He said, “You will be my birthday gift to him.” he added, smirking at me. My neck shivered as my skin felt the goosebumps. Of course, I expected that to happen, to do something in return for that amount of money. Like I always told myself, once this fateful night ended, it would be over. My mouth hung open, but before I could answer back, the door burst open, followed by a man’s “I’ll take her.” I saw Mr. Polanski’s eyes gaped behind me. I turned my head back to look who at the intruder. My eyes dilated to see who it was; it was the same man I saw and helped me at the diner, Mr. Bushy brows. “No, you can’t. She’s a gift…” Mr. Polanski chucklingly said, “I can, and I’ll double her price!” Mr. Bushy brow demanded. I was dumbfounded, looking back and forth on them. Mr. Polanski stood up brusquely, “Theon she’s …” Theon… “Come with me!” Theon gently roared, looking at me with his knitted thick brows, “You choose. Me or that guy?” he questioned, his eyes were somehow telling me to trust him. Mr. Polanski didn’t speak. I saw him shaking his head before sitting down on his chair. He then looked at me with a smug on his face, silently asking me. I sheepishly smiled at him. I’d rather go with this handsome guy than be an anonymous gift to someone. “I’ll pay for your night, double the price,” Theon once again offered. I looked at him and saw his hand extending. I stretched my hand to hold his, “I…I’m sorry…” I whispered to Mr. Polanski, who was smirking at us. “Go on, love,” he said before lighting new tobacco as Theon grabbed me and pulled me into him. I just took the offer in a heartbeat. The door closed, and Theon was still holding my hand, dragging without looking at me. My mind was muddled, “Where is he bringing me?” I asked myself.
