Alan pondered. Before, after the time in the hospital, his whole life before that day had become nothing more than a hazy, amorphous dream. All the convincing and therapy and mental drilling that there was no way he was who he thought he was, who he knew he was, it had eventually worn down on him enough that he’d come to believe it the truth. He was a hole in the world that couldn’t be filled. Not rationally anyway. Even trying to do what Mark’s mental trick prescribed, he strained to find hold of something that was tangibly real in his mind. While doing so, Mark watched him with a detached, seemingly clinical, curiosity. ‘I’m just...I’m not sure of any of it. Not anymore. It’s been so long.
