Chapter One
****Allison’s POV****
I remember that night as if it happened yesterday; it was burnt into my brain and played on repeat like a broken record.
I was seven years old and stumbling through the woods in the middle of the night with tears streaming down my face. Snow covered my silver blonde hair, I was covered in bruises and cuts, and my clothes had blood all over them. I did not know whether it was mine, but I didn’t care; all I could think about was finding someone to help me. I had no clue where I was and had no recollection of my life before I woke up in the snow. But in my jacket pocket was a piece of paper that had my first name, date of birth, and what I am written on it.
After about three hours of walking through the cold woods, I heard rustling from various bushes surrounding me. I stood frozen in place, making sure not to move a single muscle, which turned out to be a good decision because not long after, I could hear a low growling surrounding me from every direction. I had nowhere to go, not that I could’ve even if I wanted to, being a seven-year-old girl surrounded by a pack of werewolves.
“Well, aren’t you a pretty little thing,” a deep voice came from behind me. I instantly spun around and saw a tall, muscular man standing before me. He was only wearing a pair of shorts and had deep brown curly hair. He was staring at me intensely with a wicked smile spread across his face.
“What is your name, child?” he asked me.
“Allison,” I barely whispered back to him as more tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Well, Allison, do you know where you are?” I just shook my head in response. “This is the Black Moon territory; now, do you know who I am?” Once again, I shook my head in response. “I am Malcolm Black, the Alpha of this clan. And you, my dear, are trespassing,” he said the last part a lot more sternly, which put me even more on edge.
“Are you going to kill me?" I asked softly; he slightly chuckled and gave me a grin that I didn’t like.
“What kind of monster would I be if I killed a child? No, I’ll take you back to the pack, and we will sort you a family to live with until we find your parents.” So, I willingly went with him to the pack house, but the treatment I received was quite the opposite of what I was promised.
It has been about 11 years since that night, and I am still living within the Black Moon territory; I haven’t left since the day I arrived, though I have attempted to escape many times. It makes me wonder if I even have a family out there. Surely, they would have found me by now if I did. Either that or they don’t care about me. Not that anyone ever has. I have been abused every single day since I have been here. Not only have I been abused for most of my life, but they have also used me for my ability to see the future. I always try to hide my premonitions from the pack, but it was hard sometimes, as every time I had a vision, it would give me a splitting headache. Whenever anyone in the pack sees me have a premonition, they would torture me until I told them what I saw.
I used to think that it was a gift, but now, I’m not so sure. Because of my ability, the pack believes me to be part witch, and they are afraid of me, and what I might become. They were using my own power against me, and they treat me like a slave, I hardly even had a room. I sleep in the basement on a half-broken bed that was too small for me and an old, quilted blanket that I made from clothes that were going to be thrown out. It wasn’t very well quilted, so it got freezing in the winter.
“What the f*ck are you doing just standing there!” someone yells at me before slapping me, snapping me out of my daze.
I look up to see Kiara, the Alpha’s daughter, and her best friend, Millie, standing in front of me with scowls on their faces.
Kiara grips my shirt and effortlessly yanks me up off the ground, so my feet were dangling in the air. It isn’t hard, considering I’m not that tall, I only stand 5 foot 4.
“I asked you a question slave,” she sneers at me while Millie snickers beside her.
“I’m sorry,” I say quietly which earns me a punch in the face. I nearly fall to the floor again, but Kiara doesn’t let go of my shirt, so she holds me in place.
“I didn’t ask for an apology! I asked what you were doing!” she spits in my face.
“I’m sorry, I just spaced out,” I reply as I fight back my tears.
“Did you have another vision?” she questions as she grabs my cheeks with her free hand and tightly squeezes my face, and my eyes widen in fear.
“No, I swear I didn’t!” I insist as I shake my head fiercely at her and try to get out of her grip.
“Kiara! That’s enough!” I hear the Alpha’s voice from the other side of the hall.
“But daddy, she was just standing here slacking off,” she whines as she looks over my shoulder to look at her father.
“I’ll take care of it. But you’re supposed to be at your Luna classes,” he says to her, and I hear him start to walk closer to us.
“Ugh, fine,” she groans as she throws me to the floor, and I hit my head on the tile flooring. “Come on Millie,” Kiara says before walking away together. Once they have left; Alpha Malcolm walks closer to me and stops right in front of me so that I am looking at his feet.
“Get up!” he growls at me, so I slowly stand up and look at my feet. No one ever looks him in the eyes because he is the Alpha, and it is a sign of disrespect to look the Alpha in the eyes unless you were family or his right-hand men. It is especially disrespectful for a low-level Omega slave like me.
“What were you doing?” he asks, annoyance clear in his voice.
“I’m sorry Alpha, I zoned out while cleaning the hall,” I reply without looking up at him.
“Go to your room and wait for me there!” he angrily snarls. I cannot see his face, but I know that he is smirking at me because I know exactly what he intended to do.
I quickly walk out of the main hall and head straight down to the basement to wait for Malcolm; while I’m waiting, I decide to clean up the room. My bed is in the far-left corner of the room; on the wall next to the bed is a window, but it’s completely boarded up so that I can’t escape. On the other side of the room is a closet, but there are hardly any clothes in it as I don’t own much. Beside the closet, I have a set of drawers, but just like my bed and wardrobe, it is broken and mostly empty except for the books I have collected over the years when people would throw them away. Sure, they aren’t in good condition, but I was determined to teach myself how to read, considering I have been deprived of an education. After 11 years of teaching myself things by taking books, I have learned to read and write; I even managed to take math textbooks and teach myself some things. But if any pack member ever finds out that I have been stealing books from the trash; I will be severely punished.
By the time I finish tidying up the basement, Malcolm still hasn’t come down to torture me. I am thankful as my head is starting to hurt. I walk over to my mirror that hangs on the wall above my drawers to have a look at my cuts. There are several cracks in the mirror, but I am still able to use it.
When I look in the mirror, I see a split on my forehead that runs from my left temple to the edge of my eyebrow. As usual, it isn’t healing, I am given wolfsbane daily to prevent my wolf from being able to heal me.
‘I’m sorry,’ my wolf, Alina murmurs softly in my head. She is incredibly weak, but she tries to protect me as much as she can, she is my only friend, apart from Hailee, the only person who makes me feel like I belong.
‘It’s not your fault,’ I tell her.
I open my drawer and pull out some bandages and antiseptic that Hailee’s mom gave me. I pour the antiseptic onto a rag and dab it on the cut on my head. It stings but the pain is bearable compared to some of the pain that I have experienced in the past. When I finish cleaning my cut, I put my things back in the drawer and wait for the Alpha to make an appearance.
I wait hours for Malcolm to come down to the basement to punish me, but he never shows up. I guess I guess it’s my lucky day. I have attempted to run away before, but every time I try, I get caught and tortured. I may have nowhere to go, but anywhere is better than here.
Every night I pray to the Moon Goddess Selene to take pity on me and will let this nightmare end. I also pray that she won’t give me a mate when I turn 18, which is in two weeks. He will just use me for my power and then toss me aside like I’m nothing when he’s done with me. I promised myself and Alina, that on my 18th birthday I will leave this pack and never return. And no one will be able to stop me; as a legal adult, they will have no claim on me. I still need to talk to Hailee about this because I would love for her to come with me.
Some time passes by as I lie on my bed and daydream about my leaving this awful place when I hear a light knock at the door. My heart starts racing uncontrollably, even though I knew that it wasn’t the Alpha as he would have barged straight into the room. I get out of bed and walk over to my door before opening it; I am surprised to see my best friend, Hailee, standing there.
“Hails, what’s up?”
“Alexander wants you to meet him in his room,” she states. My eyes widen in horror, everyone knows that the future Alpha is a man slut, and if he doesn’t get what he wants, he takes it by force. Just like his father. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I have heard all the things he has done to women that reject him, and it relieves me that he didn’t show any interest in me unless it came to punishments.
“D-did he say w-what he w-wanted?” I stutter, and she shakes her head, but I can see the tears starting to well up in her hazel eyes. “Hey, listen to me, I have a plan, and I can handle myself; I will be fine; in two weeks, you and I will get out of this place forever,” I reassure her. Most of it is the truth, yes, I have a plan to leave in two weeks, but I’m not so sure if I can handle myself if Alexander decides that he wants me.
“What plan?” she asks me. I haven’t told her what Alina and I are planning as I didn’t want to risk the wrong person listening in.
“I have a plan to get out of here, but I can’t explain now.” She nods her head curiously; I can see she isn’t convinced.
“Are you sure you will be okay? I can stand guard at the door if you need.”
“I will be fine; I don’t want you to get hurt if you get caught,” I respond.
“Promise?” she asks me.
“Yes,” I promise her before pulling her into a tight hug. Hailee had already turned 18, but she is almost as short as me.
“Okay, I have to go now; I’ll meet you in the kitchen at five to start dinner,” Hailee is a maid in the packhouse, but she isn’t treated nearly as bad as I am. Still, I do know that she has been raped several times; the main offenders are Alexander and his best friend Kyle, who is also the future Beta.
“See you then,” she replies before we release each other. I close the basement door before I make my way to the top floor of the packhouse.
The top floor is for the Alpha and his family, the second floor from the top is for the Beta and his family, and the third floor is for the Gamma and his family. The second floor is full of rooms for pack members and spare suites for visitors. The bottom floor is where the entertainment room, living spaces, and kitchen is located. I’m not allowed to go to the entertainment room, and I’m not allowed to eat in the main hall in the packhouse with the rest of the pack; that is when I’m even permitted to eat.
Once I make it to Alexander’s bedroom door, I lightly knock, and it opens almost instantly. He must’ve been impatiently waiting for me. He is wearing a pair of black shorts and shirtless; I have to admit, his muscles are perfection; if he wasn’t such as asshole, I might have even been attracted to him. He has curly deep brown hair like his dad’s and muddy brown eyes like his mom’s. In my opinion, his eyes aren’t that pretty, but if I ever admit that, he would ruthlessly punish me.
“What took you so long?” he growls at me.
“I’m sorry, Alpha, I was in my room when you called for me,” I apologize, my gaze never leaving my feet.
“Whatever, get in here and clean up this mess,” he grumbles. I freeze for a second and give him a confused look, but at the same time, relief floods through me. Relief that he isn’t going to force himself on me. “Why are you looking at me like that? You’re the pack slave, aren’t you?”
“Nothing,” I quickly respond and hurry into his room to start cleaning it.
“Oh, did you think I wanted to f**k you?” he asks. I stare blankly at him, and he bursts into a laughing fit. “Why the f**k would I want to f**k something as disgusting as you? You’re nothing but a worthless, filthy slave who will be dead soon. And no one – ,” he stops his little rant, and his eyes widen as if he just told me something he shouldn’t have; then it registers in my mind what he just said.
“What did you just say?” I stand there dumbfounded.
“Nothing. Now get to work before I do something that you won’t like,” he says before storming out of the room.
I stand there for a few moments trying to wrap my head around what Alexander just said. What did he mean I’ll be dead soon? Was he planning something? Are they going to kill me?
‘We need to leave this place,’ Alina growls in my head. Where did her newfound strength come from?
‘I know, but I don’t know a way past the border security, plus, how am I supposed to leave the packhouse without being spotted? Especially since we aren’t 18 yet.’ She doesn’t respond after I remind her of the risks. Instead, she retreats into the back of my mind.
I would think he was being an asshole as usual, but the look on his face tells me he just revealed something big. But I don’t have time to dwell on what just happened; I needed to clean this room before he returns.
I look around the room and see that it is mainly the bed that is messy. I walk closer to the bed, and the disturbing smell of s*x is overpowering. When I see the used condom on the bed, I internally groan and throw up in my mouth a little bit. I grab the trash can from the far corner of the room and put all the trash in it before replacing the bin bag. Once I finish that, I strip the bed, put on some fresh sheets, and fluff the pillows to make the bed look nicer; this is a general routine I follow when cleaning bedrooms. Just as I finish my final touches on the room, the bedroom door swings open, and Alexander walks into the room.
“Are you finished yet?” he growls.
“Yes, Alpha,” I reply as I bow my head.
“Good, now get out.” I quickly leave before he finds something that he doesn’t like and decides to punish me for it. I race down the stairs and head towards the basement to clean myself up before I start prepping dinner.
I change from my rags and put on a black long-sleeved shirt paired with a light grey skirt that flows to my ankles. Once I finish getting changed, I make my way to the kitchen. When I get there, I look around for Hailee, as she should already be here. I have an uneasy feeling in my stomach, and Alina is pacing in my head. Hailee isn’t just my best friend, she is my only friend, and I consider her more like my big sister, both Alina and I do. She is the only one that has always been there for me, and she tries protecting me from the beatings, but there’s not much she could do as she was only three years older than me.
“Something is wrong,” Alina murmurs.
“What do you mean? How do you know?”
“Hailee’s wolf and I established a bond.”
“What? How?” I ask. I didn’t even know that wolves could establish bonds with each other unless they were mates or family.
“I don’t know,” Alina replies before retreating into the back of my mind. I don’t know how it’s possible, but I don’t have time to think about it. I have to find Hailee, and I need to find her now. I walk towards the back of the kitchens; I push open the big metal door that leads outside to where the bins are kept. As soon as I open it, her scent hits me; her lavender scent is strong, so she is definitely nearby. As soon as I step out the door, I see her sitting on the ground with her knees up to her chin, rocking back and forth with tears streaming down her face.
Alina was right. Something is seriously wrong.
