My phone started to vibrate in my pocket as I wiped the twentieth glass for today. Letting out a huff, I carefully placed the glass on the counter and wiped my hands on the apron that I was wearing before fishing my phone out from my jeans pocket.
It either had to be Enzo or my father.
Who else would call me? I do not know anyone else other than them.
A small smile graced my lips when I saw Enzo's name on my phone screen. I quickly answered the phone and pressed it against my ear.
"I have amazing news to share with you" I heard Enzo say from the other end of the line made me smile.
I was the person that he had thought of when something amazing had happened to him and that thought alone made my heart swell with overwhelming love for that guy.
"Okay" I nodded my head, knowing full well that he won't be able to see that, "Tell me," I asked, waiting expectantly for him to share the news with me.
I heard him moving around, "No, I have to tell you in person" He chuckled softly.
I shook my head again even though I was smiling ear to ear like a Chesire cat, "Then you know where I would be right now" I said, glancing up unconsciously to find Leila staring at me with a smile on her face.
Oops, busted.
"Yes, I will be there in less than twenty minutes" I heard Enzo say, pulling my attention back to him.
"Okay, see you soon then," I said cutting the call. I stuffed the phone inside my jean pockets again before resuming my work. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Leila stand up from one of the couch and heading towards me.
I thought she was going to give me an earful for not going to the movie night last night but she took me by surprise, she always does. "You seem to be in a good mood today," She said, taking the seat right in front of me.
I chuckled and nodded my head, "I am in a good mood today" I said putting all the dried glasses in the designated place.
"Mind telling me why?" She asked me and I didn't have to look up to see that smile on her face because I could already hear her smile in her tone.
I looked at her anyway, "Well, Enzo said he had some amazing news to share with me" I grinned up at her.
Leila's eyes narrowed on me, "Did he tell you what's that news yet?" She asked me, tilting her head to the side.
"Not yet" I shook my head, still smiling.
Leila started to grin like a Cheshire cat when I said, "So you're in a good mood before even knowing what's that amazing news yet?" She asked me and I nodded in answer, "I am really glad Enzo found someone like you" She said, making the smile on my face falter for a fraction of a second.
"Why?" I whispered under my breath.
Leila's eyes softened visibly when I asked her that question, "You're willing to be happy for him even though you didn't know what's the reason behind his happiness" She said everything in one breath, her words flowing so fluidly that I almost didn't catch all of it.
I sighed and shook my head, "Sometimes I feel like I do not deserve him" I admitted, feeling ashamed of myself.
Who would want to date a criminal's daughter? Enzo is everything that I am not. He is rich, he is handsome and he is absolutely a charming man while I was just a poor girl who had daddy issues. Fate sure had something weird planned out for me in my life.
"Nonsense!" Leila chided, "You deserve the world" She scowled at me, not appreciating the way I am degrading myself.
At least I have someone like Leila in my life. Someone who believes in me and sees that I am worthy despite me not being a good friend to her. I wanted to laugh at my own life. No one would have made their first true friend of my age.
"Thanks, Leila," I said, genuinely grateful for her words.
Leila glanced at her watch and then smiled up at me apologetically, "Alright, I have to go now. Noah's preschool teacher wants to talk to me about his performance in his class" Ehe said, gathering her stuff in her bag.
"Okay, have a good day," I said with a smile on my face, waving my hands.
There were not many customers today so I pretty much only tidied the books and the glasses. When it's almost lunchtime, my stomach made growl and I clutched it in my hands, in hopes of turning the sound down. My cheeks heated up and I looked around to make sure no one listened to that thundering growl.
Letting out a relieved breath when no one spared a glance my way, I looked at my co-worker who was arranging the books on the shelf. "Melissa" I called out to her and she glanced up at me from the books that she was currently arranging on the shelves, "Could you cover for a while," I asked politely with a smile, "I am going to get a sandwich and then will get back as fast as I can" I added before she can ask me why.
Melissa nodded her head and I sighed, muttering thanks under my breath before undoing the apron and stepping out of the cafe.
I crossed the road, heading towards the small hawker shop that sold street food. The food here is cheap and tasty, also not that far from where I work so it became my habit to buy a sandwich here every day. It might not fulfill my bodily needs but I am still grateful for what I can afford.
I know someone out there is probably dying to have this sandwich.
While I was paying for the sandwich I bought, my phone vibrated in my jeans pocket again. I quickly paid the money and answered the call without looking at the screen.
"Hey" I heard Enzo say right after I pressed the phone against my ear.
A small smile tugged at the corner of my lips at the sound of his voice, "I thought you would here" I said, starting to walk towards the end of the sidewalk, heading towards the cafe again.
"I am here" He answered and I stopped walking right in my tracks.
I looked to my right and left to see if he was here, "Where I can't see?" I said as I let my eyes dart around to spot him.
I heard him let out a chuckle making the smile on my face widen, "Across the road" He said and I looked across the street and sure, he was standing there, holding a phone against his ear and with a wide smile on his lips.
"Hi," I said shyly in a small voice, waving awkwardly with the hand that I was holding the sandwich at him and he waved back at me.
I smiled at him and gestured him to come over, "Okay cross the road, we can walk from here to the cafe" I said, waving my hands in front of me, signaling him to come forward.
I could see him smirking at me, "Your wish is my command, madam" He said before ending the call and stuffing the phone inside his jeans pocket.
What happened next is probably one of the worst things that have ever happened to me.
It felt like everything happened under a few seconds but I watched everything in slow motion with my jaw hanging open. A small gasp left from my lips as I watched the most horrendous scene that I have ever witnessed in my life.
Enzo took a step forward to cross the street and at the same time, a van came rushing from his left, crashing against him. Enzo's head made contact with the front of the van and blood splattered on the van before his body flew a few meters away from the van, taking in the impact of the collision.
For a second it felt like my heart stopped beating.
My whole body turned cold and for a few seconds, I couldn't even believe what I had just watched. Finally having some control over my body, I lurched forward, towards Enzo. Letting out a scream in horror, I ran towards Enzo, praying to the god above that nothing serious happens to the love of my life.
Please, let him live through this, Do not take away the one blessing you ever gave me...
Enzo was laying on the road without moving. I kicked my feet under me to go faster and landed on my knees next to him. I let out a whimper at the sight of his blood that had splattered on the road before looking down at him.
No, god oh why?
His eyes were closed and there was an ugly gash on his head. Blood was still flowing freely from that gash. from the corners of my eyes, I noticed that people were now surrounding us in a circle, watching us curiously. I paid bo mind to them, my eyes never left Enzo's unmoving body that was laying down in front of me.
No, Enzo...
With my heart on my throat, I willed myself to raise my trembling hand and took his hand in mine ever so gently to feel the pulse on his wrist. I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to focus on his pulse which was not there at all. I tightened the first I had on his hand, trying to feel his pulse once again but again, I could not feel it.
My eyes flew open as my heart clenched in unimaginable pain, "ENZO!" I screamed in terror, scared to even move his body. Tears were already blurring my vision as they ran freely down my cheeks as I shook my head in denial, "NO!" I screamed in agony hoping Enzo would somehow miraculously open his eyelids, revealing those beautiful gray orbs again but he remained unmoving,
Laying there, lifeless and pale.
I started sobbing hysterically as I watched his lifeless face through my tear-blurred vision. The face that had stolen my heart. The face that was smiling at me from across the street a few minutes ago, "OH GOD, PLEASE NO" I gasped breathlessly in agony.
Everything happened so quickly. He came into my life, like a comet, lighting up my night and now he is gone, taking the light with him again, leaving me in the darkness again.
He is gone.
He is gone and he is never coming back. Ever again.
I looked up at the crowd that was surrounding us as I heard the sirens wailing from far, "Help! SOMEBODY HELP!" I screamed, hoping someone would come forward to help me. To help him. To bring him back to life from the doors of death.
I looked down again at Enzo's lifeless body as blood had pooled around him. Suddenly it felt like it was hard for me to even breathe properly. My breath came in short gasps as I wailed like a baby, throwing my hands around the love of my life and sobbing against his chest before everything went black and my mind went blank.
