22 While his sister held the door, Nathan carefully carried the flowers April had bought the previous day out of the house and down the path to his car. He had to wait for April to open the passenger door for him when he got there, the size of the arrangement his sister had decided on kept him from managing on his own. Under other circumstances Nathan might have made some comment about the mass of flowers he was struggling with. Today wasn’t the day for comments, though, regardless of whether they were sarcastic, serious or humorous. He had been able to put aside thoughts of today while he focused on his work, but now that it was here he couldn’t ignore it, nor could he ignore the depression that had been on him from the moment he woke – it was worse than anything he had felt in months,
