I wasn't sure why, but I felt so comfortable here. Bennu was such a delight, and I knew that I would enjoy time here. "Shall I show you to your room, little one?" Bennu smiled warmly and reached out his hand to me.
I felt my heart beating erratically, and I nodded my head, trying to hide a smile. What was wrong with me? Why was I acting this way? I know I just got here, but why didn't I remember where I had come from."That would be great. I am exhausted and so stuffed from all the food I ate. I literally feel like I am going to explode." I laughed softly, shaking away my wayward thoughts and placing my hand in his as I stood up from my chair.
He placed my arm around his elbow and brought me in close to him. I shivered slightly as my body was brought closer. "Why is there no one around? Where are all the Phoenix?" I said with curiosity.
Beenu just looked down at me and nodded sadly. "They are no more, I'm afraid. They were killed off one by one. They were searched out ruthlessly for their magical abilities and their blood. Especially their flaming featthers. With one of those things, people could have changed the world and believe me they tried," he sighed sadly, "Phoenix have the ability to bring things back to life and live forever. Can you imagine the greed of all humanity thinking they could play God and choose who lives and dies."
I gasped sharply and shook my head as tears began to fall down my cheeks. "They brutally killed all of my children and all for what? In the end, it all backfired, and people couldn't figure out how to make the Phoenix powers work. There is a specific way to do it, and if you do it wrong, everything in your path will burst into flames. So many people died because of their greed for power and control," Bennu hit his chest with a closed fist and sniffled softly, "I am the last of my kind. I have plans to repopulate my realm, but so far, that plan has not come to be."
"That's horrible. How can people be so cruel." I whispered as I wiped my tears away with the back of my hand. Bennu just smiled warmly and patted my hand that was wrapped around his elbow. "You are here now, so things will get better." He smiled mischievously.
I looked at him with a look of confusion, but he just chuckled and led me down the hall to my room. The place was huge and I knew if he wasn't with me I could get lost very easily. So I gripped him tighter and stayed close.
"This is where you will be sleeping." He said as he opened the door, "If you need anything, do not hesitate to call for me, I am next door." He let go of my arm, and I spun around looking at the room.
"It's so beautiful and extremely big. I might just get lost in here." I laughed jokingly. There was a huge bed adorned with pillows, and to the side was a small table with a lamp in the shape of a bird.
In front of the bed was a sliding door that led out to a balcony that was full of beautiful flowers. "What kind of flowers are those?" I said, pointing toward the balcony. Bennu just smiled and led me out to the balcony. He opened the sliding door and walked outside with me.
"These are lotus flowers. They usually grow by the water, but for some reason, they began to grow all over my realm centuries ago and have never stopped growing. They are quite beautiful, aren't they?" He reached out and plucked one off the vine and handed it to me.
I lifted it out of his hand and leaned down to smell the lotus flower. The smell was exquisite, and yet there was a slight smell of tartness. "Is this what you made the lotus flower cream out of? These?" He nodded his head and reached over and pulled a petal off the flower, "Open your mouth."
I opened my mouth, and he placed the petal on my tongue. "Can you taste it?" I looked at him and frowned, "Taste what?" He leaned close to me and placed his forehead on mine. "Close your eyes, little one," I obeyed and waited for his instruction, "The tartness and hint of sweet that hits you. It's quite pleasant if you let it consume your tastebuds."
I suckled the petal and tasted exactly what he had been talking about. "OH! That is so different, but so good. My tastebuds are extremely happy." I shrieked with excitement and opened my eyes, only to gulp with uneasiness.
He was so close to me. His eyes shined with something I couldn't pinpoint, but then started changing colors. The colors were so beautiful and I couldn't take my eyes off of them. "That's right, little one. Just look into my eyes. Can you feel the power of the lotus flower finally taking effect? Come close to me." Bennu said in a low and soft voice.
My eyes felt heavy, and my body swayed as I walked towards him. "Here, have another," he whispered as he placed another petal on my tongue. I felt light as a feather, and for a minute, I thought I was floating.
"Why did you have to become his mate? You were supposed to be mine. You were meant to be for me." Bennu growled angrily as he wrapped his arms around me and smashed his mouth onto mine. His kiss was all-consuming. He took my breath away as he viciously kissed my lips. I had no strength and had no way to fight him. I felt lightheaded, almost like I was drunk.
He ripped his mouth away from mine, and I gasped for air frantically. He sighed sadly and shook his head. "Fûck. I can't intervene with the matebond. It's something sacred. I won't ruin your life because of my greed. You have already been through so much. I will never hurt you, my precious little one. I may be a God, but you are more important than even me. If I have to sacrifice my happiness and prolong the reproduction of my kind, then I will. For you, my precious Cassandra, I would do anything. Now sleep, you need to rest. We will talk tomorrow. I have so much to teach you, and we have a very long conversation that needs to happen."
I blinked my eyes a few times, but my eyes began to droop heavily, and I couldn't fight them any longer. What was I even hearing? I didn't even understand what he was saying. My head felt hazy and compliant for some reason.
"That's my good girl. Sleep. Tomorrow will come before you know it." He whispered and leaned down and kissed my forehead, then turned around and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
Sleep took me away, and for the rest of the night, I dreamt of Bennu and lotus flowers, forgetting about everything else.
