6 Save Her Again

Miles smiled at Kristi and said, "Now that Alicia is gone, why don't we get down to business. The reason that I am here is that a guest wants you to go to the VIP box. Hurry up. You can't be late, or he will be furious!"   Kristi sighed and said, "I'm on my way." She bowed gratefully towards Miles and hurried over and into the box that he'd indicated.   The VIP box was situated in the back of the club, and the light inside of it was dim. A group of people was sitting in the box, waiting for her and talking excitedly.   Ray was here, too, and he seemed to be the center of attention.   Kristi could tell by the way from his guests' dressed that they were rich and powerful.   Kristi had once been dazzling to behold, and she had been the proudest woman in this city. She had since been reduced to what she was now, and she hung her head down in shame and in fear that these important socialites would recognize her.   She also knew that Ray had summoned her to shame her, which she hated him for.   After a moment, Ray raised his head, looked at Kristi, and said, "Come here and pour the wine!"   Kristi reached for the bottle of wine, but as she leaned forward, the woman beside Ray kicked her hard in the leg, and she fell backward to the floor. And when her ass hit the ground, there was a loud bang that echoed through the box.   The room when silent, then, as Kristi began to cry.   Ray scowled. His face turned green, and it was a grim, dark expression that met Kristi when she finally looked up. Her cheeks flushed uncontrollably, and her voice trembled. "Sorry, I didn't mean it ..."   "Why would I believe that?" Ray sneered. "Do you think that you can seduce me by trying to garner sympathy from me?" He laughed cruelly and said, "You have no chance of seducing me, not with your ugly new look!"   Now that Kristi's face had been exposed, one of Ray's guests gasped, inadvertently interrupting ray's tirade. "I thought this woman looked familiar," he said. "Could this wretch be Kristina Zuniga, who had once been so high and mighty?"   "Yes," Ray replied in open disgust, "but pride cometh before a fall, and a haughty spirit before destruction. Solomon said," Ray added wisely.   "I heard that she killed her sister," the man said, "and that she was the cause of her parents' death. She deserves to die, and the sooner, the better!"   Kristi was angrier than she'd ever been in her life, but by now, she had regained her composure, and her expression was cold, calm, and unreadable.   Ray glared at her. It was evident that he wanted to humiliate her further. He wanted to see her at his feet, wailing and begging for mercy, but for the moment, she appeared invulnerable. The look in her eyes was undeniable, and it spoke volumes – Do what you want to do to me. Say what you want to say about me. But I will not crack! – that look said.   "Why is she here with us?" the woman who had kicked Kristi asked. "Her existence is polluting the air!"   "No way!" the man who had suggested that Kristi should be killed hissed. "Since she is here, we should TAKE CARE OF HER, if you know what I mean - and I think you all do!" He turned to Kristi and said, "While we discuss what to do with you, would you please pour me a glass of wine?"   Ray turned to the man and said, "That will be enough of that," and then he dismissed Kristi.   As she got up to go, though, a fat middle-aged man suddenly reached over and grabbed her wrist. "Look at this wretch," he said as he shook her arm. "It's only been two years since she went away, but look how thin she is now. It's painful to look at her." As he said that, he stood up and got within kissing distance of Kristi.   A sly smile appeared on his face, and he said, "Since your father and I did business in the past, you should accompany me from now on. Miss Zuniga, what do you think?"   The man reached out to touch Kristi's face, but before his hand made contact, Miles appeared. He grabbed the man by the wrist and twisted it violently until he cried out, "Ouch!"   "How dare you touch her?" Miles yelled.   "M-M-Mr. B-Bradford," the man stammered. "W-What are you d-doing here?"   "Do I need to explain myself to the likes of you, you fat piece of s**t?" Miles hissed, and the man sat back down, and despite his considerable girth, he seemed to shrink into his seat.   Ray glared at Miles for a moment, and then he stood up authoritatively. "Miles," he said, "I advise you to mind your own business."   Miles smiled and said, "This woman's business is my business. She's just a girl, Mr. Black. It takes a pretty small man to bully such an easy target. You are not much of a man, though, so I suppose that makes a lot of sense. What do you have to say in your defense?"   Ray frowned, and his face turned red from anger and embarrassment. "You'd better think about what you just said. Do you want to against me for her?" He pointed at Kristi.   Miles was about to reply, but Kristi stepped between them with her back to her would-be savior. She looked Ray in the eyes and said, "Mr. Black, he just wanted to help me, so please don't blame him. He has a thing for Damsels in Distress, I think. Everything is my fault, though. You can do anything you want to me, but please leave Miles out of it. This is between you and me, and you and me alone."   Unexpectedly, when Ray heard what Kristi had to say, her words made him angrier than ever. "Are you pleading Mr. Bradford's case?" he hissed. As he said this, he took a step forward and pushed her aside, causing her to stumble. This time, though, when she fell, she landed outside of the box, and before anyone could call her back in, she got to her feet and ran back to her living quarters.   Once she was inside, she slammed the door behind her and began to curse. She could not understand how, after only a couple of years, Ray had gone from giving her a little taste of heaven to making her life a living hell. He had committed her to the asylum without a second thought. He is a Demon – she figured – an asura, no longer a person worthy of her, or anyone else's, love.
