Chapter 5

1093 Words
ALEX'S POV The next morning, I occupied myself with a crime novel. I liked to watch true crime documentaries and read crime novels in my spare time. I always had a thing for solving mysteries. Even though my nose was stuck in a book, I wasn't really reading—my mind was too occupied with the thrilling prospects ahead. My brother and I, after years of searching, had finally found our destined mate. Wendy. The name alone sent a feeling of excitement through me. Everything about her was perfect, from her curly hair to the way she laughed to the way she smiled. We couldn't have asked for a better mate. I was sure things would go well between us. Lost in thought, I rounded a corner and almost walked straight into someone. Instantly, I stopped just in time to avoid a collision, but the person stumbled, dropping the stack of clothes she was carrying. "I-I'm so sorry, Alpha!" she stammered, bowing her head. Her voice trembled as she spoke. The apology was so quick, so full of fear, that I felt a bit guilty. I blinked, realizing it was Allison, Wendy's personal maid. "No, it’s my fault," I said. Even at my words, she kept her head down, not daring to meet my gaze. I watched her, taking in the sight of her. Even in the awkward, shapeless uniform she wore, there’s no denying that Allison was incredibly beautiful. Her blonde hair was tied up but a few strands framed her delicate face. She had the most beautiful pair of dark green eyes I had ever seen. There was something about her that captivated me, something that pulled at a part of me I hadn’t noticed until this moment. My wolf stirred in my chest, more awake than he’s been in days, and I suddenly felt a connection so strong that it almost knocked the breath out of me. What the hell? I already had a mate. Why was I feeling like this? "Allison, right?" I asked, keeping my tone light. I wanted her to loosen up a bit. She looked scared as hell. Her body literally trembled in front of me. I could see her stiffen slightly. Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the clothes closer to her chest. "Y-yes, Alpha," she replied, barely above a whisper. Even her stutter drew me in, and for a moment, I forgot myself. She had a calming voice, the kind that could send you to sleep. I found my eyes drifting over her, noticing the curves of her body even under the dull maid uniform she wore. There was an undeniable allure about her, something almost magnetic. I was drawn to her in a way I couldn't explain. I couldn't help but wonder what she’d look like if she weren’t in that uniform—if she was wearing something that actually fit her properly, something that showed off her figure. My wolf was practically purring just at the sight of her, and it confused the hell out of me. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think Allison was my mate. But she wasn't. Wendy was. Still, I couldn't ignore this feeling, this strange pull towards her. "You should be more careful, Allison," I teased "Wouldn’t want you to get into trouble for something that wasn’t even your fault." She swallowed hard, still not looking at me. "Th-thank you, Alpha. I’ll be more careful." I took a step closer, and she tensed up. She had a sweet lavender kind of scent, soft and soothing. I resisted the urge to lean in closer and sniff her. "No need to be so nervous," I said trying to put her at ease. "I don’t bite… much." To my surprise, she let out a small, nervous laugh, but it quickly died down. She tried to step back, putting more distance between us. "I-I should go," she said, her eyes darting around the hallway as if looking for an escape. Before I could say anything more, a group of maids moved past us with their arms full of supplies. Allison took the opportunity and quickly ran away in the midst of them, mumbling another apology as she practically ran down the hall. I watched her go, feeling a strange sense of loss in my chest. I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to her, something that I was missing. My wolf was still restless, pacing within me. I made a mental note to talk to her again when I got the chance. There was something about her that intrigued me. I wanted to get to know her better. But there was something else—something unsettling that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Something wasn't right and I had no idea why I felt that way. My mind lingered on me and Allison's encounter as I headed to my office. Tjr book in my hand was long forgotten. That evening, I tried to lose myself in the pages of a novel, but the words blurred together. My thoughts continually drifted back to Allison. What was it about her that has me so… intrigued? I wasn't supposed to feel this way, not when I’d already found my mate. But I couldn't deny the connection, the way my wolf responded to her presence. It was unnerving. As I pondered over this, the phone on my desk rang, snapping me out of my thoughts. I reached for it and answered it. "Good evening, Alpha" the person said. "Who is it?" "Alpha, it’s Chief Howard," Chief Howard was the chief of police in our territory. From the tone of his voice, I could tell that something was wrong. "Is there a problem?" I asked. "We’ve got a situation that we could use your assistance with." I sat up straighter "What’s going on?" "It’s a case we’ve been working on—one that’s becoming increasingly complicated. We could really use your expertise, and the resources your pack can offer." I glanced at the clock. It was late, but if the Chief is calling me personally, then it must be serious. "I’ll be right there." I hung up. Whatever this case was, it’ll be a welcome distraction from the confusing thoughts swirling in my head. Thoughts of Allison and the undeniable pull I felt towards her. But even as I prepared to leave, I couldn't help but wonder—what was it about her that has me so captivated? And more importantly, what was I going to do about it?
