DAMIEN POV
Work was going great until Josh showed up. Madeline didn’t deserve his wrath. Can’t a guy just accept when a woman is not interested in them? I rolled my eyes just thinking about it. She is the sweetest, most genuine, caring person. She didn’t deserve any of the horrible things that happened to her over the course of her life. I thought of everything that I had learned about her life growing up. Her mom was narcissistic. I’m surprised that she even cared to keep Madeline to be honest. I guess when you need someone to take care of you, who better than your kid, right? I cannot justify her behavior. Not to mention she basically offered up her own child to her boyfriend. It made me sick with anger to think about. He better pray he’s never alone in a room with me. Only one of us will be walking out of that room.
The next few weeks went by quickly. I spent most nights with Madeline at her condo. During the days, we’d been helping my mom with little things around the house. Her and Madeline were getting along great. Mom was teaching Madeline everything she knew about gardening. Madeline has expressed her dream to have a big farm house, with lots of land, and space for gardening. I loved watching them interact. When I was young, mom always told me she’d be able to tell if a woman was right for me. Whenever we get a second alone, she whispers in my ear that she’s too good for me. I honestly think that she likes Madeline more than she likes me. Though I don’t blame her. I fell madly in love with her. I never believed in love or soulmates, but from the second I saw Madeline taking pictures of those Dolphins, I felt a pull to her. We developed a friendship first that blossomed into love. When she showed up to my father’s funeral, I knew. She gave me space when I needed it, support when I was weak, and a shoulder when I broke. I would forever be grateful for her presence that day. And every day after if I’m being honest.
“Damien, I need you to create a bomb a*s drink for this weekend” Gemma begged. July 4th fell on a Saturday this year and we were expecting business to be booming. The past week has been super busy with vacationer’s and locals, but July 4th at any bar was always wild. “I’ve narrowed it down to two that I think will be great. Would you like to sample?” Gemma narrowed her eyes at me “Are you really asking me if I want to sample alcohol?” I chuckled “Coming right up, boss.” The first combo was simple. It contained a shot of Fireball whiskey over ice and then topped with sprite. The second combo contains quite a few ingredients. Blue Hawaiin Punch, Ciroc summer citrus, Smirnoff Red, White, Berry, and sprite over ice. I slid both glasses to Gemma, not telling her which combo was in each cup. “Oh. My. Fuc*ing. God. Damien, you are a drink wizard.” Gemma squealed. Madeline started laughing, hard. I just shook my head. “Which one do you want on the menu?” Gemma’s eyes grew wide “Uhm, both. Maddie, give us some names and put those baby’s up on the board.” Madeline was still recovering from laughing about Gemma’s wizard comment when she started laughing again. I raised an eyebrow at her “I just can’t believe she called you a wizard.” she said trying to catch her breath. “Laugh all you want. Drinks that good can only be explained with magic.” Gemma huffed. “What do ya’ll think of The Firecracker and a Sandy Hurricane?” Madeline questioned. “Perfect! Write them up and send me everything I need to order. Ya’ll, we make the best team.” Gemma gushed, clapping her hands excitedly. Madeline and I locked eyes. I smiled and blew her a kiss.
