Just a date

MADELINE POV I’m feeling better after a shower and a nap. I got ready for tonight, going for a simple look. Threw on some black skinny jeans, red tank top, and some mascara. I put my hair in a high pony and laced up my white converse. Gemma was already inside when I arrived at SANDbar. I had ignored all of her texts today, shutting my phone down. I didn’t want to waste the energy explaining on the phone when I knew she’d press for the details when I got here. As expected, Gemma was standing behind the bar when I arrived, quickly coming around and wrapping me in a tight hug. After a minute, she pulled back “I didn’t see you leave last night and when I couldn’t get ahold of you earlier, I called Damien. He said you got sick last night at the bar and he took you home. I’m so sorry. You should have come and ripped me away from that douchebag of a man and made me take you home!” she scolded. I will have to thank Damien for his confidentiality in not giving Gemma all the details. Unfortunately, I blew up on Josh. Sh*t, I’m going to have to call him and apologize. I throw my head back, frustrated. Of all people, it had to be him that I had a meltdown on. “You okay?” Gemma questioned, breaking me out of my thoughts. “I had a panic attack last night. I drank way too much and made an as* of myself dancing with Josh. I was just thinking about how I was going to have to apologize to him.” Gemma gave me a knowing smile. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you.” She reached out, capturing me in another hug. I shook my head at her “No, really, it’s fine. I need to try and figure out my triggers...and maybe not drink so much. That environment isn’t good for someone who has regular panic attacks.” I walk behind the bar, beginning to get out shot glasses and alcohol for when Damien arrives. “So, tell me about your night?” Gemma snorted “Not much to tell. I thought I was into that guy you found me with, until he started pushing up my dress and trying to bang me right out in the middle of the club. I might be wild, but I’ve got more class than that.” she huffed. I shook my head “Men, right?” Just then, Damien came into the bar. He was wearing dark skinny jeans and a snug, white t-shirt. It showed off his body perfectly and it took everything I had not to start drooling. “Ladies” he said with a wink. I snapped out of my trance, blushing furiously. Gemma walked over to him, wrapping him in a tight hug. “Thanks for getting my girl home safe last night.” He looked past her and straight at me “Anytime.” he said with a smile. I smiled at him genuinely. I have a feeling we’re going to get on great. “Alright, show me what you can do!” Damien grabbed the bottle from my hand, lining up 8 shot glasses and flawlessly filling each one in a line without spilling a drop. “Impressive” I nodded. “Would you like to try any of my drink creations?” he asked. Gemma piped in “Absolutely, you pick. I’m down for anything.” He started looking around the liquor cabinet, pulling out Rumchata, Southern Comfort, and Blue UV vodka. We both looked at him a little confused, that’s an odd combo. “Alright, so you add equal amounts of each. Tell me what it tastes like.” He smiled and handed Gemma the glass. I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t ask for one. I’m very curious about the combo. Gemma gasps. “What in the actual f*ck. That tastes like a f*cking blueberry waffle! Maddy, you gotta try some.” Damien looks my way and I nod. He quickly pours the same combination in a glass for me and handing it over. I quickly down my drink. To say I was shocked was an understatement. It literally tasted just like a blueberry waffle. “Okay, that was amazing. What else can you do?” He smiled and winked “You have no idea.” Is he flirting with me, or is that just how he always is. When he winks at me, heat pools in my lower abdomen. Coworker Madeline. Remember that. Dirty thoughts are a no go. I shake the feeling that he’s given me. I watch as he grabs out a bottle of orange juice and the Khalua. Equal parts again, this time handing us both a glass. We both tip back our glasses, drinking the whole thing. “It’s a tootsie roll!” I squeal. I widen my eyes, realizing that I literally just squealed. I clear my throat “Those are my favorite and this tastes just like one.” Damien looks proud. "Both of these are signature drinks I created for the last two bars that I worked at. They go over well.” “Give those a name and put them up on the board as specials this week! I love it.” Gemma said excitedly. She excused herself to the office, leaving Damien and I at the bar. “Got any ideas for names?” Damien asked. I thought about it for a second. “What do you think about a Dirty Waffle and Tootsie Slide?” “Sounds fitting. I hope you don’t mind, I play around with drinks often.” I shook my head “No problem at all. I’m happy to try anything.” I pulled a stool up, grabbing a marker and writing the new drink names up on the board. I turned around to Damien reaching his hand out to help me down. “Thank you, sir” I smiled. “No problem, mi’lady” he bowed. We both bust out laughing at the banter. The bar opened and we were instantly busy. It might be a Sunday night, but that didn’t stop the flow of partying vacationers. Damien fit in here great. He was great with the customers and worked quickly and efficiently. We made a pretty great team. I couldn’t help but notice all of the women that flocked to Damien. He was a bit of a distraction. I found my eyes following his every move. Almost mesmerized by how easily he not only poured and handed out drinks, but his way of talking to our customers. Men and women. “You’re going to have to teach me your tricks.” I yelled over to him. “Anytime, sweetheart” he smiled and winked. He’s gonna have to quit doing that. How do I tell him ‘Oh yeah, Damien, when you wink at me, I get turned on like a damned teenager. So quit.’ I shake my head of the thought. I was lost in thought and didn’t notice Josh and Rebecca sit down at the bar. Josh was looking at me wearily. I needed to apologize for my outburst, but I’m not sure I really feel like doing it right now. Sighing, I walk over to Damien. “Mind if I take a break?” I asked, nodding in Josh’s direction. He smiled “I got this.” I mouthed a thanks and walked over to Josh. “Can we talk?” He smiled, standing up and motioning to an empty table. He sat down and I scooted in opposite of him. I’m not sure where to start. I’m not really interested in giving Josh all of the details, but I need to be honest with him about what happened. “I’m really sorry for what happened last night. I had a little too much to drink and ended up having a panic attack. I’m sorry if I directed any of that at you, I don’t really remember much of what happened to be honest.” He chuckled humorlessly “Uhm yeah. That was awkward. You kept yelling at me calling me Peter and it was a bit embarrassing. People were giving me looks like I had attacked you. I’m not that kind of guy and I hope you don’t think of me like that.” I shuddered at the mention of Peter’s name. “No, of course not. Like I said, I had too much to drink. I don’t really remember what all happened.” I forced a smile. “Maybe we could try again, minus the alcohol. I will make sure you remember my name.” he winked. I cringed and it didn’t go unnoticed. I looked away, clearing my throat. “I don’t know.....” “Let me show you a good time Mads.” he begged. “Sure. I’ve got Tuesday off.” He beamed “Tuesday at 7pm. Text me your address and I will pick you up.” I nodded, sliding out of the booth and back up to the bar, already regretting my decision to agree to a date.
