“Uhmmm…Hi!” Lexie said with an awkward smile as the woman finally withdrew from her.
She was wearing a chef’s cap and apron, and looked like she had just come out from somewhere really hot, despite the coldness of the place.
“Aren’t you the cutest thing! I’m sure we would be friends fast. Anyways, head over to the office down that direction, and you will be attended to.” Bella said, then looked behind her at something or someone, before sighing. “I guess I wouldn’t be the one attending to you after all. Someone would meet you in the office.” She said a bit sadly, and then she was gone.
The whole exchange was a little bit weird to Lexie, who wasn’t used to such display of affection, or people in general.
She turned and followed the woman’s movements as she walked away, raising her brows as someone dragged her into a door.
Weird. Weird. Weird.
But if there was something she was sure of, it was the fact that the hug had felt warm and welcoming.
And she had definitely smelled the wolf on her..
Today was definitely starting out fine. Well, this part of the day. Hah!
After her really short shower, she had made herself a cup of coffee with the coffeemaker she had found in the apartment, and some toasts. The groceries the landlord's wife had given her, were perfect for dinner, and not so much for breakfast. But she had found some bread, and some butter, which she had used for her toast, and was pretty much satisfied. After all, sne wasn't a very big eater.
Now though, as she stood in front of the office Bella had directed her to, she couldn't help the bundle of nerves that filled her.
If there was one thing she had learned all these years while living with her absolute nightmare of a stepfather, it was the fact that she had mastered how to hide her nervousness or fear beneath a mask.
And that was what she was going to do now.
She needed this job. And no amount of fear or discouragement was going to stop her from getting it.
~
So, you didn't go to college, just highschool?" The manager, Trevor, asked, looking at Lexie. The fact that he was looking at her like she was crazy, didn't sit well with her, and she hoped she was going to get the job after all. Was he suspecting anything about her? Had she overdressed? Or, had she made a mistake in the resume she had given him?
"Yes." She answered, nodding and entwining her hands with each other. She was lying through her teeth, bit she knew she had no choice. She had in fact, graduated with honors in business. But at the moment, the last thing she was looking for, was getting an actual job with that certificate, until she was well accustomed with living in Seattle. She needed to lie low, not going about, brandishing her ivy league certificate.
Trevor narrowed his eyes at her, before looking back at the resume. "Hmmm..." He scratched his long beards that had streaks of white in them. "I see you did well in school." He said, still scrutinizing the file in his hand.
Lexie started to feel more nervous than she had felt coming to the restaurant, which was making her impatient. They had been at this for quite a while now. If he wasn't going to give her the job, then he could have at least just said it, instead of grilling yet with questions as if she was applying for the CIA.
She had come with a positive mindset, and had literally called herself an employee already. But it taking a long time coming.
She wished it was the nice woman she had met earlier and not this man.
She had been so surprised that she hadn’t taken time to look at the woman.
As Trevor continued to look at the file, she let her gaze wander, taking in the decor of the office she was.
If she hadn't seen the restaurant, she wouldn't have agreed that she wasn't in a company's office building, because the office looked like it belonged to someone in a suit, barking orders at his employees, and not waitresses.
She eyed Trevor, taking in the fact that despite his formal attire, he didn't look like he actually belonged in the office they sat.
"Well, from what I see here, there is no reason whatsoever, not to give you the job. I didn't miss the little culinary school thing you got in there, but for now, you working have to start our as a waitress, just like the others. Then we can see how you go from there.
Lexie nodded with understanding. "Thank you very much Sir." She said, already feeling her heart start to accelerate from the excitement of finally getting a job. No, she wasn't going to do anything stupid like start jumping around in celebration and probably losing the job before she even started.
Trevor, who had been keeping a very serious expression all the while, placed the file on the table, before breaking into a smile. "Welcome to La Rosa de Nightingale." He said. "Here is what you would be paid bi-weekly," he pushed a paper to Lexie, and when she picked it up and looked inside, she almost gasped as her eyes widened.
Wtf!
That was far more than she could have ever imagined. Now, more than ever, she was happy for that advertisement she had seen on social media and the newspaper, that had actually led her to this place.
Although a very huge part of her had been expecting to find the place packed with potential employees. But then again, she guessed there were not many people who would clamor for the job of a waitress.
"Thank you very_" her words were cut off when there was a knock on the door, just before the door opened.
She turned to see a wild haired girl peeking through the door.
She looked like she was just about nineteen or twenty, but with a very bright face, like a happy soul.
And gosh, that hair was wild, and had to be the most beautiful and colorful thing Lexie had seen, after the restaurant. It was…red.
"I'm sorry to disturb your little interview, but I came to warm you in advance, that the Devereaux’s are here. And with their father too."
Trevor made a choking sound, getting up from his chair. "You keep on talking like you aren't one of_" but before he could say more, wild haired girl interrupted him.
"Two minutes, Trevor." She said, then turned her gaze to Lexie, sizing her up and down. "Did you get the job or not?" She asked lightly, giving Lexie an intense gaze with the prettiest green eyes she had ever seen.
Lexie could only nod, as she forced her throat to work. "Yes, I did." She answered simply, unsure if how to answer the girl, who seemed to be keeping Trevor on his toes. Who she was though, was something Lexie found herself curious about. As young as she was, she seemed so at ease at a place as serious as this one.
And why did she look familiar?
"Hmmm.." she said, still sizing her up. "Good for you. I guess I'll see you around." And with that, she closed the door, leaving Lexie and an annoyed looking Trevor.
And…she sounded familiar too…
"Don't mind her she's....Well, I would have loved for you to go home and start work tomorrow. But it seems like you would have to work today." He said, giving her an apologetic look. "I'm really sorry."
Lexie looked at him with confusion. Why the f**k was he apologizing, when she was very eagerly waiting to work?
"Oh, it's no problem, Mr Smith." She said, smiling inside of her. If only Trevor knew how happy she was ..
Trevor groaned. "Please, call me Trevor." He said, picking up a tab from the table and rushing out of the room. "I'll take you to the place where you can get your uniform, and then, Bella will give you a rundown of how things work here."
She had no problem doing that, as he looked to be around her age, probably younger, but had an air of maturity around him, that made him act really older than what he probably was.
Lexie followed him, until they walked into what was obviously an employees area, from the number of lockers in the place.
But, damn if it didn't also look fine as hell.
It was only when she had walked a few more steps, that something clicked in her mind.
Wait…
That was Bella? The same woman she had met earlier with the chef’s cap and apron?
Why the heck did she look so damn different!
