Chapter Five

1466 Words
Diablo There was way to many people here for my liking. My sister and Gabrielle amongst them. And they had dressed for the occasion. Both of them looked fresh faced and feminine. Not that I looked at Sarah that way but I caught Bat looking longingly at her. And I couldn’t deny that Gabrielle looked good. Her polka dot dress was simple enough but somehow the thin white belt made her waist look even smaller than I remembered. Her new dark hair feathered around her face and…. I tore my eye away. I had to stop it. And get my head back in the game. Protecting my people, my town and my territory. Not that any of them where making it easy for me. News that the legendary Welsh Dragon was arriving had spread like wild fire and everyone seemed to want to see him. Well not everyone. But Sarah and Gabrielle were definitely here to do that. Sarah was intrigued and Gabby? Well if the rumours were true Gabby had been Dewi Llewelyns live in lover since she was eighteen years old. They had history. And I hated it. “Dewi.” I had been so wrapped up in my own thoughts I hadn’t seen or heard the bar door open and close. Foolish. Thinking of Gabby really didn’t help my concentration at all. “Easy brother.” Bats hand came down firmly on my shoulder and it was only then that I realised I was vibrating with a silent growl as I watched Gabby scoot off the bar stool she had been sat on and rush forward. Her white flip flops slapping against the floor. “Just calm down.” What the hell was wrong with me? I normally had much better control. “Gabby.” He opened his arms and she folded herself into them. She was smiling and talking in a jumble of words. Even my advanced senses couldn’t make sense of them. “English Gabby.” The tall man and he was a good two inches taller and wider than Wren who stood by his side smirking at me. Held her out at arms length. “Talk English so everyone can understand.” That’s why I couldn’t understand them, she had been talking Welsh. “I’ve missed you all? How is Rhydian? Grey said you found Amelia and she had had her baby. I want to know how everyone is.” He chuckled, smoothing her dark hair behind her ear. And jealousy raged through me. He needed to stop touching what was mine. “I like this new you Gabby.” He said softly and I couldn’t help but hate him at that moment. “Being here is good for you.” “I want to come home Dewi, when can I come home?” She sounded so lost, her voice so thick with tears . That my heart clenched. Had we really made her feel that unwelcome? Did she hate us that much or was it just me she hated? “Are you not being treated well?” Brown eyes met mine over the top of her bent head as it rested against his chest. There was a second where his eyes blazed a deep scarlet, judgement poured over him in waves. And my own rose up to meet it. Who was he to judge me? He had kept Gabrielle like some sort of pet for years, and god knows what she had suffered at his hands. Not to mention the rumours that he had kidnapped his own mate and forced the mark and a marriage in her. Yeah He could go to hell with his judgement. “Gabby , we can catch up soon after but first I need to speak to Diablo..” he stepped around her , Wren right at his heels as they came towards where I was sat. Damn dragon was handsome as well. Ancient, rich , well dressed and handsome . No wonder Gabrielle was in love with him. “Thank you for seeing me Diablo.” His hand out stretched , he waited for me to take it. But all I could do was stare at it. Had that hand smoothed over the soft planes of Gabrielle’s body? Had… I shook my head. And finally clasped his hand. “Thank you for coming.” I let go of his hand as quickly as I could. There was a knowing , if somewhat puzzled look on the ancient ones face. Shit. Dragons were mind readers. How had I forgotten that? “I know you have a mate and a young family at home.” He nodded once but the smile had slipped from his lips. “Yes I do and I would like to get back to them as soon as possible.” “You’re sure it’s her?” Wrens voice was ragged and I knew there must be a story there , no man had that much emotion in his voice over a woman he didn’t have a past with. Especially not a cold hearted asshole like Wren. I really really didn’t like him. “I’m not sure of anything.” I said with a shrug, sure I had sent out scouts. But none of them could give me the a real answer. There was someone knew on the outskirts of town. “They didn’t sense she was a shifter.” I carried on. Watching the pain flit across Wrens face. He was good at hiding his emotions but he couldn’t hide them from me. I had got where I was today by being able to read people. “But I give you permission to go and see for yourself , if it is your fabled Princess then I want her out of my town.” I let my words sink in. “We do not need the council sniffing around and making things difficult around here.” I didn’t care how unfeeling I sounded. “The council is coming for all of us.” Dewis lilting tone had turned sharp. “You will have to choose a side sooner or later. Will you not help us?” “None of you have ever helped us.” Bar said with a growl. “A few years ago you would have been hunting our people down. We owe you nothing.” “Things change.” Dewi said firmly. “And sometimes we have to fight for the people we love.” His eyes Met mine. “Don’t you agree?” Yes I did agree. I would fight to the death to keep my people safe. My sister and the Sabers and their mates. They were the only people I cared about. “If you will excuse me.” I stood up suddenly. “Bat will give you the address of the place she is working.” I walked away hiding my smirk until I had pushed open the door at the back of the bar that lead to the toilets. I wish I could see the stupid dragons face when they realised just where there precious Opal dragon was working. A small sob caused my feet to falter. My eyes swept over the narrow space before coming to land on the small figure at the end. “Why are you crying?” My voice came out rougher then I wanted it to and I made myself soften it as Gabrielle gave a small shriek and climbed to her feet. She scrubbed at her face with her hands as I stalked towards her. “Gabrielle why are you crying.” I reached her in an instant. Trapping her between the wall and my body I pulled her into me before I even realised what I was doing. My hands smoothing down her back, her hair. “Don’t cry Gabrielle.” I whispered it into her hair. My voice barely a whisper. “I want to go home.” She sounded so lost that my grip on her tightened. “Are we really that bad? Are you really that unhappy with me… with us.” I amended quickly. My cheek rubbed against hers and a deep purr vibrated through my chest. She was a cat shifter or at least she used to be. I was betting she would feel comfort in my purr. And I was right, she relaxed slightly. Her own cheek brushing mine right back. She had missed this. The comfort only two cats could give each other. It was good for me as well. It had been a long time since I had let someone comfort me. My lips brushed against the corner of her mouth and she froze. “What are you doing?” I hadn’t meant to kiss her, it wasn’t even a real kiss but she was acting like I had thrust my tongue down her throat. I had just got caught up in the moment. In the feel of her body against mine and the orange blossom smell of her shampoo under my nose. “Comforting you, you were crying.” “You kissed me.” She pulled away, her red rimmed eyes darting up to my face. “You should not have kissed me.” Well f**k. “Don’t flatter yourself sweetheart,” my voice was icy and I hated myself even more for the hurt that settled in her eyes. But I just couldn’t help myself. “I’m not interested in dragons sloppy seconds.”
