After pizza and a few beers, we moved to one of the empty cabanas near the poolside bar - mostly so Thane could watch Luci behind the bar with Mindy, her best friend and a Gamma of the Pack.
There were actually four rankings within a Pack, a Gamma was a warrior, and their sole job was to answer any calls of trouble within the territory, King - or Larry as I'd learnt was his real name from Mabel scolding him for taking her book to get her attention - was a Leader of the Gamma's, mixing him with the Delta's. Delta's were warriors and diplomats; whilst they fought when called on and helped the Gammas, their main jobs were patrolling the lands, ensuring the markings and any traps were maintained and accompanying Jaxon or Jace anytime they left the territory for any reason.
Beta's were the second in command, Thane and Luci handling the job together; Thane handling the Delta's and Luci the warriors.
Omega's were the cogs in the machine, like Manny, his wife Pam, Ben and the women Trinity, Kim and Phoebe. They kept the Pack functioning on a day-to-day level, working the shops and farms, medical personnel and office workers.
Then there was the Alpha...or Alphas in our case. They lead the whole shebang, but there being two of them, they also split the responsibilities.
From what I'd gathered, the Blackwater Pack was highly revered and known for its efficiency in not only business but warfare as well. Especially against Rogue's who were somewhat of a problem for all Packs.
I sat on Jax's lap while he lounged on the large daybed against the headboard, his nose running my neck while I scrolled through the Rogue clause in the contract.
Jace sat beside us, his hand absently trailing patterns on my leg while he chatted with Ben and a few other Pack members who had joined us.
I remembered most of their names, but quite a lot had passed through, introducing themselves to me and chatting happily with my mates, I'd hope to commit them to memory soon, but the town housed over five hundred Pack members, so I think it was okay if I had a bit of trouble for now.
"Hey, King?" I called absently, not looking up but knowing he was still sitting beside Mabel on the chaise across from us.
"What's up, Luna?" He asked, sounding tired making me glance at him. He lounged with his arm over his head, his dark eyes halflidded and he looked...drained. I felt a twinge of sympathy but pushed on for the moment.
"What's your experience like with the Rogues on the shared border?"
He closed his eyes fully, laughing roughly. "What Rogues?" He countered, adding, "There's rarely any actual Rogue sightings."
I frowned, looking at the contract and read the clause statement aloud. "With the increase in Rogue sightings, the Blackwater Pack will double or triple patrols and implement high-tech preventative measures, whilst maintaining maintenance of both said systems and patrols to deal with the Rogue problem more efficiently."
King opened his eyes at that, a look of pure anger in them that made me a little scared.
Jaxon and Jace felt my fear, their heads snapping to King and snarling at him.
King ducked his eyes instantly, muttering a sorry to me.
I shook my head, ignoring my mates. "Don't be, just tell me why you're angered by that so I can understand," I said, my voice coming out soft and caring, slightly surprising me since I was four beers in and I was fuming under the surface. But, looking at King, I didn't want to be scared of him; I wanted to find a way to help lessen his anger because if he felt this way - I was sure the other Pack members did too, and that didn't sit right with me.
I didn't like them being angry or uneasy.
Jaxon nuzzled into my neck, our bond and close contact letting him know what I was thinking.
I felt his love and admiration in the way he gently wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me just that bit closer as if he could merge our two hearts that beat in the same rhythm.
King relaxed, sitting up and slung his legs over the side of the chaise, Mabel beside him unphased by his movement as she continued reading what I realised was a medical journal.
King glanced at Jace and Jaxon, asking for permission to speak freely about another Pack and their leadership.
I scowled, making King look at me. "If I ask for your opinion, it has nothing to do with politics or Pack dynamics. I want to know why my Pack is upset." I found myself saying, feeling irked. I felt the bristles of surprise and another wave of admiration from both my mates as I stared down their strongest Pack member. "Now, Larry," I said pointedly, seeing him scowl slightly, "what is your opinion?"
He looked at Jace and Jax again, but this time with a small smirk, leaning his arms on his knees and meeting my eyes then, his smirk broadening. "I like you," he said, his eyes narrowing before he jerked his chin at my mates. "You're a spark these idiots need,"
Mabel animated for the first time, lowering her book to slap King with the back of her hand.
"Respect your Alphas, dickwad." She growled softly, no heat in her words and her eyes sparkled with a deep love for her mate.
He grinned at her. "Luna said I don't have to right now," he stated, somewhat proudly.
Mabel looked around him at me, looking for confirmation.
I shrugged. "I don't like to mince words," I said simply.
She gave a small chuckle, looking up at King and smiled lovingly. "Carry on then, honey bear."
King smiled brightly at her, leaning back to plant a loud smooch on her waiting pursed lips, they said a smile before turning back to their own thing.
Zena whined, wanting to complete my bonding with my mates - to feel the level of true love they felt. What I felt now was already something I never expected but with the marking and mating...I knew we would be something even more.
Jace's hand squeezed my leg tenderly, Jax trailing small kisses along my neck. They felt it too, and their excitement and eagerness flooded into mine.
King set me with a look, pulling me out of my slight daze and sighed. "Alright, so you know we have a pretty big Pack," he started, waiting until I nodded before he continued, clasping his hands together. "We were only at two hundred three years ago, the majority of Pack are Omega's who were turned rogue for not doing their job correctly in that dickheads Pack," he threw his thumb West, indicating Sigmund's Pack lands that were beyond the rolling hills. He then gestured to Ben who'd gone very quiet. "Ben is one of our newest members because of it."
When I turned my attention to Ben, I was almost overwhelmed by the look of despair and heartache he tried to hide by looking down at his drink.
I opened a mind-link to Jax instantly. Can I comfort him? Please? I begged, needing to at least hug the poor kid.
He's nineteen. He shouldn't look so - Jax released me, taking the laptop and I moved. Swinging my legs over the side, I was on my feet and went to Ben. "Stand up," I said to him, my voice rough.
Ben obeyed, putting his drink aside and rising to his feet.
I grabbed him, pulling his thin, tall frame down and hugged him around the neck and shoulders. I felt his reluctance, his surprise at my actions, but he soon relaxed, hugging me back gently and started to cry into my shoulder.
"Who's still there?" I asked, keeping my voice low so only he heard me.
He tensed for a moment, fear going through him and I fisted his shirt into my hands, willing him to feel I just wanted to help.
His hands knotted in my jacket, a small sob learning him as he answered. "My little sister, Veronica." I pulled him back, taking his face in my hands and searching his cloudy, sad eyes.
His lip quivered, seeing the pain echoed in my eyes. "She's only twelve; she turns thirteen in a few days," he whined pleadingly. I hushed him, nodding that I would and let him have a moment to cry a bit longer, not hiding the fact his pain echoed to me and tears fell for him.
I released his face after another minute, squeezing his shoulders and stared into his eyes. "Deep breath, with me, ready?" I said quietly and soothingly despite the emotions, making his eyes narrow in confusion before I took a dramatic inhale of air, raising my brows at him to follow.
"Oh," he muttered, a small smile of amusement curling his lips as he did the same; equally as dramatically, I had to stop myself from laughing.
We did three more until I saw the smile starting to reach his eyes, finding me somewhat ridiculous but entertaining.
I squeezed his arms and then went back to Jax's lap. I took the laptop back, checking something at the bottom of the contract and clicked my tongue, leaning back against Jaxon somewhat roughly, making him grunt dramatically.
I hid my smile and found the map of Sigmund's Pack, kindly filled with population amounts, locations and layout.
I sighed, closed the laptop, then cleared my throat, getting those in the area's attention - even a few Wolves who lingered outside popped their heads in or looked in our direction - and said. "I don't often say this," I started, feeling a small air of tension building with anticipation and worry. "But," I glanced back at Jace, giving him a sheepish smile. "I was wrong."
Jace rose a cocky, teasing brow. "About?" He drawled, making me scowl at him playfully.
"About," I repeated, "Not using violence."
Jaxon tensed beneath me, but I felt his curiosity outweigh it.
"How so, Little Flame?" He purred in my ear, his voice rumbling through my body, and I had to stop myself from squirming with enjoyment.
I focused, looking at King for a moment. "We're going to sneak into Sigmund's Pack and get all the Omegas out." I looked at Jace then, my jaw tightening as I added. "Most of them are just kids, I... I'm worried even if we don't sign this," I gestured to the contract. "He'll still go ahead with it, just...not safely." My heart tightened. Fifty children, twenty-four females and twelve males.
They were all Omega's or Wolfless - innocents.
I looked across the group, a wave of soberness taking me and looking at Ben for a moment, seeing the hope in his eyes for his sister. I stood up again, glancing across everyone who was looking at me, finally settling my gaze on my handsome mates.
My voice came out stern and unwavering. "We go tonight and I'm coming with."
My mates shared a look, a small smirk on Jace's face while Jax frowned slightly.
But, I felt they weren't going to deny me.
Jax finally stood, nodding and looked at King and Thane. "Get me a detail and our Rovers. We can cut the security feeds from here. Jace," he turned to his brother who was now on his feet, grinning.
"Yeah, yeah," he said waved off, coming to my side and grabbing my hand. "We're on medevac; come on, Sweetheart." He tugged me behind him, Mabel closing her book and quickly catching up to us to stand on the other side of Jace.
"Could I-"
Jace chuckled, cutting her off. "Yes, Mabel," he said teasingly. "You can be on the jump out with us,"
Mabel, with large-rimmed glasses, a round, adorable face, short-cut brown hair and sparkling hazel eyes, grinned wickedly, tucking her journal into her chest with one arm while the other did a small victory punch into the air. "Yes!" She hissed excitedly. "Finally!"
Jace chuckled, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and tugging me close, kissing the top of my head. "You should plan all our date nights from now on," he muttered, making me laugh.
"Don't distract me," I warned as we stepped into the elevator. "Fight now, flirt later."
Jace grinned at me, his eyes sparkling, telling me he could most certainly do both.
