Thirteen: Packs

An hour later, I'd showered in the adjoining bathroom of the office and changed into the clothes Jace had brought with us; a pair of skinny black jeans, an army green singlet and a leather jacket with thick black hiking boots. He french braided my hair for me, having me sit between his legs on the floor while he sat on the couch in the office. Jaxon finished some paperwork on his laptop, his eyes narrowed as he looked over a contract. "Hey, Jace?" He called softly, leaning away from the computer. "Hmm?" Jace replied, his hands continuing to braid. "Did you get a chance to look over the Windsong Pack's proposal?" "Some of it," Jace shrugged, tying off my hair before he kissed the top of my head. "All done, sweetie." He announced, a proud grin on his face as I looked back at him, smiling. "Thank you, honey." I pursed my lips together, demanding a kiss. He smiled, chuckling softly as he leaned down to oblige, stroking my shoulders and squeezing them gently before he stood up to stand beside Jaxon. "Now, what did you find?" He asked, his voice a small sigh, as if he knew Jaxon would say something he expected and disagreed with already. Jaxon frowned, his finger moving across the mouse wheel as he scrolled through pages. "Can I see?" I asked quietly, not sure if I was allowed. Jace and Jaxon glanced at me, a look of surprise being shared before Jaxon smiled, scooting his chair back. "Yeah, course you can." He said, his smile widening when my legs shook a little still from their attack earlier and walked to him to crawl into his lap. "You look very beautiful," he muttered into my skin, kissing my neck and making me giggle. "My mates have good taste," I shrugged nonchalantly, making both of them chuckle. I gestured to the computer screen, filled with a formal contract of some kind. "So, what's wrong with the contract?" I asked Jaxon rose a brow. "What makes you think there's something wrong?" He countered curiously. I faltered, gathering my thought process before speaking. "Uh, well, from what I gather you," I pointed to Jaxon, "handle most of the Pack things, like protection and the 'business side', I guess?" I said, using air quotes; Jaxon smirked and nodded while just Jace laughed. Ignoring the urge to elbow him in the leg that was right beside me; I continued. "So, you asking Jace about a contract and then Jace's response gives me...I guess the feeling that you don't agree with something." I said finally, feeling silly, but my mates shared a somewhat triumphant smile between them before looking at me. Jace patted my hair, cupping the back of my neck and bent to place a kiss on my cheek, grinning. "You're a brilliant woman; you know that, right?" He said, his voice sincere but teasing. I rolled my eyes at him, blushing and smiling. Jaxon cut in, his voice light but there was an edge of slight annoyance. "And you're easily distracted, Jace." He tugged me gently, pulling my attention back to the contract and continued scrolling until he was nearly at the bottom of a two hundred-plus document - even I felt like finding something else to do, and I hadn't even read it yet. Jax stopped suddenly, highlighting a subsection medical clause for the Omegas of Windsong Pack. My eyes widened, reading through the legal jargon, looking up at Jace to see his fingers curled over his lips and his eyes dark. "Does that say they want to..." I wasn't sure I could pronounce the words they used. Jace moved the computer towards himself, going through more of the document that pertained to the medical requirements of the Blackwater Pack that would do the medical care - our Pack. Jace's eyes seemed to turn into two swirling black holes as he leaned his arms on either side of the computer, his hands curled into white-knuckled fists. "f*****g Sigmund." He snarled the Alpha name from earlier, reminding me. "Why do you hate him?" I asked then, Jace faltering as he blinked, his eyes lightening slightly as he looked at me. "I don't hate him-" he frowned, glancing at the contract before adding, "I didn't hate him." I narrowed my brows. "Yes, you do...did," I stumbled, confused for a moment before shaking my head and pressing on. "I felt it like I felt the contract thing," I waved my fingers at the computer absently. Jaxon chuckled behind me, his arm wrapping my waist to cuddle me. "It's our bond, sweet girl." He said lovingly, "The more time we spend together, even without mating and marking, the stronger our bond becomes; we understand each other subconsciously and soon it'll be almost as if we can read thoughts without a mind-link." "Oh," I said, a small smile spreading at the thought, "that's kind of cute." I shook my head then, realising I was also easily distracted, and looked up at Jace again. "So, why don't you like Sigmund?" I asked, my voice coming out firm. I felt a shiver of pride from Jaxon's finger twitch on my waist as Jace narrowed his eyes at me, deciding whether to answer or try to distract me again. I held up a warning finger, pursing my lips in feigned sternness. "Don't avoid the question, even if I forget now... I'll remember randomly later." Jace's lips twitched, wanting to smile but there was a shadow in his eyes that the smile wouldn't reach. He sighed, crouching and grabbing my pointed finger between his hands. I relaxed it, both his hands holding mine as he met my eyes. "Sigmund was a friend to me in med school, but we had a falling out...a bad one." He didn't seem comfortable talking about it, so I didn't press, I just nodded, my thumb stroking his hands. "I never really trusted him after that, but I didn't hate him." "And now?" I asked, both our eyes going to the contract with Sigmund's Pack. From what I could decipher, Sigmund wanted every Omega sterilised and those that refused, killed. The darkness was back in Jace's eyes, his hands tightening around mine but careful not to hurt me. "Now?" he echoed in a growl, looking at me with the eyes of his Wolf. "I want him dead." He stood then, looking at Jaxon over me. "Take our mate out for good night, I'll be back by dawn." Jaxon moved me off his lap quickly, sliding me into the chair and was at the doors, his hand extended to stop Jace before he left. Jace slammed into Jaxon's palm, stumbling back. "Move, Jax." Jace snarled violently, my heart suddenly slamming into my chest and Zena yelped like she was in pain. Don't let them fight. She begged. They won't. I soothed, hoping that Jace would see reason. I understood he was an Alpha...but I didn't want him hurt. "Think this through," Jaxon growled out, his eyes flashing to me and seeing the fear in my eyes. He growled again, grabbing Jace's shirt and turned him to face me over his shoulder. "Think," he said again, his voice hard and demanding. Jace's dark eyes moved from Jaxon's slowly, almost as if he knew that looking at me would cloud his judgment. Our eyes locked and I moved to the edge of the chair, a small whine leaving me as Zena pushed forward, begging Jace. "Stay," Zena begged, letting me take control to add, "We can find a better way." Both of them looked at me then, another lighting of surprise in their eyes. Jaxon released Jace, both of them stepping toward me with a look that made me feel as if I was the most amazing and curious thing they'd ever seen. "A better way?" Jaxon asked, his voice light. I nodded, looking between them and the contract. "There's a better way to help them than killing." I stared, keeping my voice firm, seeing the pride in Jaxon's eyes and Jace's smirk, replacing the darkness that was there a moment ago. I let out a heavy breath, standing then and pointing to the contract. "How long do we have?" I asked Jaxon, feeling Jace's almost insulted pout at the action. Jaxon shrugged. "Sigmund said two nights," I raised a brow. "He gave you two nights to look over this?" I asked disbelief and almost disgust in my voice. There were so many pages of legal jargon that it'd easily take me a week to just read it, let alone decipher what it said. It was impressive Jaxon had read the entire thing in only a few hours since Sigmund had arrived. Jaxon's jaw twitched with anger. "He knew it'd be almost impossible to read it all, and because our Packs share a border, we need to keep alliances and war clear cut." An anger that didn't feel like my own at first swirled through me, igniting my rage. "So he thought you'd just agree to it, hoping you didn't read it all." I looked at the contract, wishing it was a physical document I could shred with my hands. "Just to keep to the deadline and the peace between Packs." Jace and Jax nodded. I clenched my jaw, stood up and unplugged the computer, closing it and tucked it under my arm. My mates watched me with curiosity as I went to the couch, grabbed Jaxon's jacket and the car keys and striding past them to the door. "Come on, we can do date night and Pack stuff," I called over my shoulder. Jace chuckled, jogging after me and took the keys and computer from me as Jaxon joined me on the other side, taking his jacket. They both grinned at me proudly, kissing the top of my head. "What do you feel like?" Jax asked, pulling on his jacket as we headed for the small six-person elevator. I thought for a moment; the only thing I craved was what I used to study and sneak out with. "Is there a pizza and beer place around?" I asked, stepping into the elevator. They stepped passed me, sharing a smirk as they stood behind me, Jaxon shrugging off his jacket and chuckling. "Yes, there is." He said, pressing the R button at the top of the five floored panels. I narrowed my brows. "Where does R go?" Jace and Jaxon just smiled wickedly at me. "You'll see," Jaxon said, his voice teasing as the elevator doors opened and my jaw almost fell off from how hard it opened at the sight.
