Chapter 71: It was always you- The Betrayal

1776 Words
Daniel is a tall boy with dark brown hair and a very well-toned body, attentive, and affectionate. After a few months of dating him, I truly believed I had found someone special for me, but not everything is rosy. For our last day of internship, a party was organized to celebrate. We have already chosen our specialties. I was still debating whether to continue at my family's hospital or accept the scholarship at Hopkins. Daniel decided to stay, so I thought it was best to do the same and pursue our residency together at the same hospital since he had been distant from me for a few months. I assumed it was because he thought I might leave him, but everything changed at that party. Feeling unwell, possibly due to the previous night's shift and feeling tired, I informed Daniel that I wouldn't attend the party and needed to rest. He agreed. After resting for a while, I felt better and decided to surprise him by attending the party. Little did I know that I would be the one in for a surprise. Upon arriving at the party, I searched for Daniel but couldn't locate him. Among the crowd, I spotted him dancing closely with another girl, caressing her body, whispering and kissing. My heart shattered at the sight. The ground felt like it was crumbling beneath me witnessing such a scene. I now understood why he had changed. He appeared genuinely happy with the other girl, and I was frozen in place until Nícol, Diego's girlfriend, called out my name, catching Daniel's attention. Diego, Nícol, and Daniel were my friends. The latter looked surprised, but I turned away and left without saying a word.  Diego tried to stop me by holding my arm. "Andrea, are you okay?" "I'm fine, I just have to go home, I have some problems to solve," I answered. Nícol seemed uneasy as the girl kissing Daniel was her friend, Samanta. My mind was clouded with anger. Diego knew it all, he knew everything, and he didn't tell me anything. "Are you sure? If you want, I'll take you home," Diego offered. "Diego, you're not going to leave me alone here, right?" Nicol responded, as Daniel approached us. "Let me explain, please..." Daniel began. "I don't want to hear anything from you. You can go with her, and I don't want anything from you either, Diego. You knew and didn't tell me anything. Don't ever talk to me again. So, don't worry, Nícol, your boyfriend won't leave with me." Diego looked at me with sadness. "Andrea, I'm so sorry." "Shut up. I've had enough. I know what kind of 'friend' you are," I said. Daniel attempted to speak, and his efforts only resulted in a slap. "Don't come near me again. Do you understand?!" I turned away, got into my car, and drove home. When I arrived, my parents were in the room. They must have just come from the hospital. I  looked at them with teary eyes and pained expressions. My dad came up to me and hugged me. "My princess, what's wrong?" he asked. "Dad, Daniel cheated on me. I caught him. And I was so foolish to consider rejecting my place on the Hopkins program to stay with him." I was in tears. "My love, I hate seeing you like this. Look at me. Don't cry anymore. Sometimes people fail to appreciate what they have. You are too valuable to cry over that boy." "Dad, I want to leave. I don't want to talk to anyone." "Love, running away isn't the answer. I don't approve of that boy, but here you have your family and friends. I would be happy if you did your residency at our hospital, so I could be close to you." "No, dad, I'm tired of people thinking I haven't earned what I've achieved. I'm not going to do it because of him, but I want to prove everyone wrong. I want to show that I deserve to be a doctor and earn my residency without any favors." Aside from being the hospital's owner, my dad oversees the neurosurgery department, while my mom is an obstetrician-gynecologist and leads her department in the hospital. I want to work at a hospital where no one knows who I am and where my parents aren't in charge. That's my justification for leaving. I might seem immature, but all my classmates were at that party. I don't want to face the reality that everyone knew what was happening except me. I just want a fresh start. My mother looks at me, distressed, and then looks at my dad. "Alright, love. Tomorrow, I will make calls to confirm your acceptance of the scholarship." "Thank you," I whispered. I don't know at what time I fell asleep until my mother entered my room to advise me not to go to the hospital. She wanted to better organize things for my trip to move to Baltimore, and so I did. In a week, I was at the airport, bidding farewell to my friends, parents, and starting a new life in another city. The residency lasted four years, and even in a different state and a different hospital from my family's, I stood out as the best of my generation. I had more opportunities in love, but none turned out well. I learned that Diego and Nícol are still together. My dad informed me, as I hadn't spoken to Diego since that day. Samantha and Daniel got married because, apparently, she was already two months pregnant that night. He had been unfaithful to me for longer than I had realized, but I left everything behind.  By the time I returned home, I was already a pediatric surgeon. *** Diego's POV   I spent months away from Andrea. My girlfriend, Nícol, doesn't like me spending as much time with her as I used to. It wasn't that difficult since we never had to work together at boarding school because I was always with Nícol. Andrea already has a boyfriend, and I became friends with the latter because he is also friends with Nícol, while Samantha is Nícol's best friend. However, they don't like Andrea, so when we go out, it's just the four of us. I don't feel comfortable excluding my friend, but Andrea's boyfriend always says she declines going out, so I assume it's okay. It's a bit strange because before, when we were still in medical school, she used to go to parties with me. Maybe something has changed. Lately, I have noticed Daniel spending less time with Andrea and more with Samantha. They might be having problems, although it bothers me to see them flirt so much. Where does my friend fit into all of this? During the end-of-boarding party, Daniel, Samantha, Nícol, and I arrived. Daniel mentioned that Andrea didn't want to attend, so I didn't pay much attention to it. However, during the party, I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable seeing how Daniel and Samantha interacted. I even witnessed them kissing, which bothered me. I decided to talk to them the next day. I wanted to attribute their actions to alcohol because I felt sorry for Andrea. Lost in thought, I heard Nícol mention Andrea's name, and there she was witnessing the scene between Samantha and her "boyfriend." She left, and on impulse, I followed her. I reached out for her arm, but she was furious, and I could see it in her eyes. "Andrea, are you okay?" I asked her. "I'm fine, I just have to go home. I have some problems to solve." I didn't want to leave her alone. "Are you sure? If you want, I'll take you home." "Diego, you're not going to leave me alone here, right?" Nícol responded as Daniel caught up with us. "Let me explain, please..." "I don't want to hear anything from you. You can go with her, and I don't want anything from you either, Diego. You knew about it and didn't tell me. Don't ever talk to me again. And don't worry, Nícol, your boyfriend won't leave with me." I looked at her, and I just wanted to hug her, but I knew she wouldn't let me. She believes that I knew everything. Yes, I had my suspicions, but it's only today that I truly see what is happening, and all I could do was apologize to her. "Andrea, I'm so sorry." "Shut up. I've had enough. I know what kind of 'friend' you are." Daniel attempts to speak, but all he gets is a slap. "Don't come close to me again. Do you understand?!" She gets into her car and leaves. I want to go after her, but Nicol stops me. "Love, just give her time. Tomorrow you can talk to her." I think that's for the best. I looked at Daniel, and he seemed unsure of what to do. "You're an i***t, Daniel! Andrea doesn't deserve this," I remarked. "Diego, you don't know anything. Your friend puts everything before me. I've had enough." "Well, you would have figured it out sooner. I know more than anyone that Andrea's life isn't as simple as it seems. There are commitments that we can't set aside, no matter how much we want to." "Now, brother, you had better help her forgive me. She needs to convince her dad to allow me to do my residency at their hospital. Without that, I would be doomed." "What did you just say? Were you with her for that reason?" I asked him. "Old Andrea is cute, but that girl is not my style," Daniel said. I hit him; he truly is an i***t.  Nicol stops me. "Diego, leave him alone." We all look at Samantha as she cries. "Love, are you okay?" Daniel asked her. "Nicol's boyfriend got angry because of something worthless" "You're a jerk! Andrea is worth a lot!" I remarked. "Hey, Nicol, it seems your boyfriend has a thing for Andrea. Apparently, the rumors that they are more than friends are true." Nicol is furious, so I suggest that we leave. Days later, Nicol asked me to speak to my father to allow Samantha and Daniel to do their residency at our family's hospital because they are expecting a baby. I did it for the child, but I know Andrea will be very upset with me when she finds out. I try to communicate with Andrea, but it's impossible. She doesn't want to listen to me. I found out a week after the incident that she went to Hopkins to study. I haven't spoken to her since that day.
