Chapter #7 - Heritage

Hunter’s POV After training we all disperse into our rooms to shower before breakfast. I should be exhausted from not sleeping at all and then training for two hours, but surprisingly I’m wide awake. I think I’m running on adrenaline from finding Camille. Knowing she’s in this building and sleeping peacefully in bed in the guest room makes my heart rate spike. I can’t help but picture the little pyjamas she might be wearing and what she looks like when she sleeps. I seriously can’t get her out of my mind. My wolf Ezra is constantly doing circles in my head, wagging his tail and purring when she’s around. I end up getting lost in thought and spend way too long in the shower. When I join everyone for breakfast they’re all talking about Camille, as if she wasn’t already all I can think about. “Yeah! I heard she’s super hot too!” I overhear one of my warriors talk about her to another male wolf and a deep, loud growl escapes my throat. Everyone simultaneously goes silent and spins around, finally noticing my presence. “That’s your Luna! You better damn well treat her with the upmost respect!” I make it clear to them using my Alpha tone that if I hear something like that again there will be consequences. “Yes, Alpha.” Everyone bows their heads. Even Jonathon and Avery respond in unison. “Go back to enjoying your breakfast.” I say to everyone and they all nod and continue eating. I sit down at one end of the table beside Jonathon and Avery. “We’ll make sure to say something if it happens again.” Jonathon assures me. “It better not happen again. She may not officially be Luna yet but she’s my mate and needs to be shown respect.” “Of course. We understand.” Avery adds. “Have you seen her yet this morning?” Asks Jonathon. “No. She’s still sleeping.” I cast my eyes downwards to my plate in front of me and grab a slice of bacon. “I’m sure she’ll get up soon.” Says Jonathon. “Yeah, she’s probably exhausted after last night!” Avery exclaims. “I’d really like to try and focus on something else right now. Eat up because we’re having that meeting as soon as we’re done here.” I say as I shovel a fork-full of eggs into my mouth. “Sounds good!” Avery starts shovelling more food into his mouth as well and Jonathon nods. After breakfast, Avery, Jonathon, Brock, my dad; Tony, and mom; Larissa all meet me in my office on the top floor. My office is directly beside my master bedroom which is one of six bedrooms on this level. They’re all designed specifically for the Alpha’s family. Cami will have her own office too but for now it’s a blank space. The same light hardwood floors that flow through the entire house flow into my office. There are floor to ceiling bookshelves on the left and right walls. On the far wall is a floor to ceiling window and in front of it sits my desk and chair. The bookshelves are painted black to match the wall colour and all the fixtures and hardware are black as well. The entire pack house has basically the same vibe as far as material and colours go. “So, what’s going on?” My dad asks as he takes a seat in one of the couches that sit in front of the bookshelves. Everyone else takes a seat on the couches as well and I flop down in my chair at my desk. “When we arrived at our Luna’s condo yesterday, she was already being pursued by four vampires. We infiltrated them just in time and killed them before anything happened.” Brock explains. “Who knows if it was only the four of them or if there are more who knew of her whereabouts.” Jonathon voices. “That’s why we’re having this meeting.” I interject. “It took us years to find Cami’s whereabouts because of her parents best efforts to keep her hidden and safe. That doesn’t mean others haven’t been looking for her too. Those vampires proved to us that other species and covens know she exists. What we need to do is figure out what other type of danger she could be in.” “If she’s the malachite Luna, then she’ll always be in danger, hun.” My mom responds. “I know that.” I reply. “But we need to eliminate as many threats as possible.” All the men nod at my words but my moms eyes flit down at the floor. “Brock, I’d like you to take a couple warriors with you again and go back to her condo. Try to pick up any scents that you can or other evidence of unwanted visitors. Go in your wolf forms, but take a bag with you in case you need to change back. It’ll be faster, and you’ll be more vigilant. If I don’t hear back from you within twenty four hours, I’ll send a search party after you.” “Yes, Alpha.” He nods and his eyes glaze over as he mind-links his warriors. “Jonathon, I’d like you to see if you can contact Cami’s mother. We know she was located in Ohio, but I’m unsure of if she followed Cami to Oregon or not. Let her know that we have her daughter and she’s safe. I’d like to invite her here to the territory so she can fill us in on anything else we should know about Cami.” Jonathon nods and whips out his phone. “Dad, if you don’t mind taking care of some of the contracting meetings over the next few days I’d really appreciate that. I have too much on my mind with Cami’s situation to make that a priority.” “Of course son. Just make sure when Cami’s situation is figured out that you get back to the head office in the city. You’re the new face of Argenti Contracting so you need to be seen doing your job.” “I’m aware of that.” The company is my dads baby. It’s only natural that would be his concern. “Of course I care about my future daughter in law too…” he adds. “I know, dad.” “What’s my job?” Avery asks. “Keeping me sane. I need to help Cami adjust to life here. She still doesn’t know what or who she is… and I need to find a gentle way to break it to her.” “Dude, you picked the wrong man to help keep you sane. Isn’t that more up Jonathon’s alley?” “No. I need Jonathon to contact Cami’s mom. He’s not as brazen as you.” I joke. “Bullshit. I’ve seen Jonny do some brazen s**t!” Jonathan’s head pops up from his phone. “Oh yeah, like what?” “Remember that time we went to that bar in the city and you walked right up to that girl and asked her to sleep with you on a dare!” Avery slaps a hand on his thigh while busting out laughing. “That was you, moron.” Avery takes a second to remember. “Oh yeah… Was I that drunk?!” “Yep. You ended up asleep hugging the toilet once we got back to the pack house.” Jonathon laughs. “Right.” Avery nods in shame. My mom and dad giggle from the sidelines. “Aaanyway… Mom I’d like you to continue making preparations for the banquet tonight and pick out an outfit for Cami. Maybe introduce her to Jessica and Megan.” I suggest. “Of course, hun. Whatever you need me to do.” Jessica is Jonathon’s older sister and Megan is Avery’s younger sister. Jessica is twenty-four and Megan is seventeen. She turns eighteen next month. Even though there’s a six year age gap between them, because they’re high status wolves, they grew up like sisters and are very close. Soon enough they’ll be Cami’s family so she may as well get to know them. And I figure more females around her right now the better. Jonathon also has a younger brother named Jackson who’s the same age as my younger brother, Emmet. They’re best friends. Megan has always been infatuated with Jonathon, though, even though Jackson is her age. Before he turned eighteen four years ago, him and Megan were joined at the hip, as close as siblings. But the minute he turned eighteen he started to distance himself from her. It made me wonder if it was because he wanted to find his mate and stay away from other female wolves… It really hurt Megan’s feelings and their relationship hasn’t been the same since. Maybe once she turns eighteen and finds her mate things will be different. Jessica found her mate a couple years ago and he happened to be Brock, my head trainer. Him and Jonathon are basically brothers in law, but Brock and Jessica have yet to be married. Avery and Jonathon still have yet to find their mates, but I hope for their sake it’s soon. A wolf is never fully complete without their mate. Brock leaves right away and the rest of us spend the next two hours going over strategies in case other covens or packs discover Cami’s existence. We decide to take every precaution when it comes to her and update all the surveillance and safety protocols in the territory. I don’t want a single person coming in or out of the territory without my permission first. Suddenly my moms eyes cloud over and after a few seconds she stands up. “I’ve been summoned for Cami.” She smiles at me. “She’s awake?” I ask, looking at the time and suddenly feeling really antsy. “I guess so. Please don’t follow me down there just yet, give it a few minutes before you guys come downstairs.” She advises. I ponder her words and then she gives me that ‘mom’ look. “Fine.” I nod. My mom leaves the office and all eyes turn to me. “Anxious to see her?” Asks my dad. “Of course I am! You have no idea how hard it is to just sit here so calm when I can smell her from a mile away!” I explain. “I do know what it’s like, actually. Those first few years after I met your mom, we couldn’t keep our hands, or tongues off each other!” He chuckles. “To much information, thanks for that.” I plug my ears and say sarcastically. Wolves are naturally very s****l creatures and it’s usually the first night of meeting your mate that you consummate the relationship. The mate bond enhances your mate’s scent to be mouthwatering. And once you meet them, you immediately have no other eyes for any other wolf. Once you mark your mate the bond strengthens and some wolves can even feel each others’ pain, as if you’ve literally become one. As we wrap up the meeting, I suddenly get a strong whiff of vanilla and raspberry once again. I can tell she’s left her bedroom and is walking down the stairs to the common areas. Ezra threatens to take over and storm downstairs to see her right away. Mate! Mate! Not yet, Ezra. We need to introduce ourselves slowly. No! Just mark her tonight! Mate her and mark her tonight! I’m not having this conversation with you. No. “Dude, you okay?” Jonathon asks me. “Yeah, why?” “Cause your eyes are black.” “s**t, really?” I blink and few times and do my best to shoo Ezra away. He almost completely took over because his feelings for her are so strong. “They back to normal?” I ask him. “Yeah. Don’t worry man… soon I’m sure.” Jonathon assures me. All I can do is nod as he tries to comfort me by putting a hand on my shoulder. “Anyways, I can’t stay up here any longer.” I say as I motion for everyone to leave my office. I follow them out and lock the door behind me. I tend to keep my office locked when I’m not in there. As we make our way down the stairs, Jonathon and Avery hot on my tail, I hear her voice and have to stop and take a deep breath. “You okay?” Asks Jonathon. “Yeah… Ezra is just really impatient.” I joke, trying to keep him pushed to the back of my mind. “He’ll get what he wants soon enough.” Avery chuckles. “Not helping.” I whip my head around and then continue walking. We round the last flight of stairs and my heart feels like it’s going to beat out of my chest. I’ve never felt like this before and it almost makes me woozy. I keep my eyes on the ground until I step off the last stair. I look up and we make eye contact. I swear she becomes more gorgeous every time I see her. Staring into her green eyes, my knees threaten to buckle underneath me. I watch her eyes trail up and down my body. Why does she have to make this more difficult for me?! Ezra is begging me to slam her into the nearest wall and claim her as mine right then and there. Once again I shove him to the back of my mind. We stand there awkwardly for some time until Jonathon shoves me slightly from behind. Speak you fool! “Good morning.” I say softly. “Morning.” Her voice is like music to my ears. And just like that, I fall madly in love.
