A few days later after the trip to the beach, I told myself I was gonna ask Bella to take us to that book store. It was Friday after all and what’s good to start the weekend off is a long trip and a good book to read.
When I got up for school, I saw it was sunny out which was awesomesauce. I wore my skinny jeans and a cute top to go with it. I brought my zip up jacket just in case I needed it. Bella done the same as me when she saw what I was wearing then saw it was sunny out herself. She smiled some when she looked back over to me.
After we got dressed, we headed downstairs to catch some breakfast before school.
School went by kinda fast, which was a good thing. The sun has come out and so has the skin. Kids are in shorts though it's still barely sixty degrees. Everyone eats lunch outdoors. I saw Bella searches the crowd for Edward.
“He's not here.” Jessica said.
We both looked down at Jessica which was sitting on the ground.
“Whenever the weather's nice, the Cullens disappear.” Jessica said.
“They just... ditch?” Both Bella and I asked.
“No, Dr. and Mrs. Cullen yank ‘em out for hiking and camping and stuff. I tried the idea out on my parents. Not even close.” She told us.
As we registered this information that Jessica told us, just as Angela suddenly jumps on us.
“I'm going to the prom with Eric! I just asked him, I took control!” Angela said all excitedly as she hugs Bella. “Are you sure you have to go out of town?”
“It's a family thing.” Bella told her.
“Oh my God, we need to hit the stores in Port Angeles before the dresses get cleaned out.” Jessica said.
“Port Angeles?..” both Bella and I said at the same time. Thinking what I was gonna say to Bella about taking us there which now she don’t since the girls are going there. “Can we go with you guys?” We asked.
“Thank God. We need your opinion.” Angela said.
Once school ended, Jessica and Angela followed us to our house to drop off the truck so we could all ride in her car. It took about an hour to get there but once we did, we went to the dress shop that Esme owned. I didn’t see them, which I didn’t think I would since they didn’t go to school today. I mean the girls probably didn’t go camping or hiking they probably just stayed home while the guys did whatever.
As antsy, distracted, as Jessica and Angela trying on dresses. Bella pulls a Mapquest print-out from her purse it reads, “Thunderbird and Whale Book Store.” Jessica flounces out of the changing room, posing provocatively.
“I think this halter makes my boobs look big. What do you think, Bella, Kat?” Jessica asked us.
Outside the window, a group of rowdy FRAT BOYS head toward a bar. Two of them stare at Jessica in her low-cut dress. Embarrassed, she turns back to us.
“Bella? Kat?”
Bella absently looked back at her. “It looks great.”
“It does look great.” I said after Bella.
“You both said that about the last five dresses.” Jessica kinda whined.
“I mean what do you want us to say, Jess. You’re the one wearing the dress not us.” I said sarcastically.
“You're not very good at this, are you two?” Angela asked us.
“I am but not Bella. But still, you wear what you think is perfect for you. Jessica, that pink one you’re wearing looks hot, Angela that lavender that you tried on a couple dresses ago it was really nice on you.”
“Thank you, Kat.” The girls both said.
“We’re sorry but Kat really wanted to check out the book store out here and maybe I should just go take her there to check it out the and meet y’all at the restaurant later.” Bella said.
“You sure?” Angela asked us.
Both Bella and I nods, then heads out. Jessica's looks in the mirror again as we walked out the door.
“She was right about this halter, though. It does look great.” I heard Jessica say as I walked out the door.
I shook my head at what she said. Jessica should’ve been a freaking blonde she acts so stupid sometimes.
Bella and I walk the few blocks towards the book store. It was okay walking there since it was still daylight. It once we finally got there, it was starting to get dark. Oh boy, I thought to myself. But once we found it, we started looking for the book we needed. At first I couldn’t find it, told Bella to keep looking while I asked for help.
The owner of the store was checking someone out when I walked up to him. I smiled and told him the name of the book that I was looking for after he was cleared up with who he was helping. He told me he had one copy left and it was in the back. He told me he would go get it for me and check me out if I were done. So I went and got Bella and told her that they had one left and that he had to go to the back and get it.
Once we got the book, me and Bella exits the shop and heads towards back where we came from. Bella started thumbing through the book we bought. As we head down the sidewalk, towards the restaurant we then hears footsteps behind us. Bella and I turns, but don’t see anyone. Bella puts the book in her shoulder bag and we continues walking.
I was kinda getting scared but I didn’t want Bella to know. But she kinda figured that out when I grab her hand.
As if Bella had a feeling that someone was following us. She looks around, changing course to cut across a parking lot. As Bella started speed walking pulling me along with her, our breath short, scared, Bella turns around just as TWO MEN emerge from the shadows, it was the Frat Boys, really wasted now.
“Wanna beer?” One of them asked us.
We looks to our left; the other TWO GUYS are there. We’re cornered. Bella let’s go of my hand and takes her purse from around her shoulder.
“Look, just take my bag.” Bella says.
“We don't want your bag.” The second frat boy says.
Bella takes a defensive stance and wraps the strap around her wrist to use her purse as a mace. They chortle derisively. But when one of the Frat Boys comes near, she swings it, hits him in the groin. The BOOK in her bag doubles him over. The other three laugh, and start to close in. But suddenly HEADLIGHTS blind them. A silver Volvo screeches up. The Frat Boys dive out of the way. The passenger-side door opens. It's Edward. We’re both too stunned to even move.
“Get in.” Edward called out.
That’s when we finally do what he says. I opened the back door and jump in as Bella jumps in the front passenger door. But one of the Frat boys jumps into the game and rushes towards Edward's side of the car. Edward SCREECHES to a halt and is out of the car and facing the Frat Boy so fast, neither the Frat Boys, nor us, sees it until it’s too late.
Whatever Edward did or said the Frat Boys were scared, instinctively backs off. As Edward climbs back into the car, Bella just stares at him as I stare towards the frat boys.
“What no, how did you find us?” Bella asked.
“I should go back and rip their heads off.” Edward said pissed off.
“No. Bad idea.” Both Bella and I said.
“You don't know the vile, repulsive things they were thinking.” Edward said confusing me along the way.
“And you do?” I asked.
“Not hard to guess.” He had said looking at me in his rear view mirror.
I shrugged my shoulders and sat back in the seat with my legs up near my chest. As I rocked myself trying to calm myself down, I noticed we was near the restaurant that both Bella and I were supposed to meet the girls.
Just as Jessica and Angela exit the restaurant as we pull up.
“Where were you!? We left you a message.” Angela asked.
“We waited, but we were starving.” Jessica added.
Of course y’all did. I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes. Then they see Edward behind us, climbing out of his car. They freeze, agog. He's composed now, making an effort to be charming. And they are charmed.
“Sorry I kept them from dinner. We ran into each other and got to talking.”
“I - we - understand. We were just... leaving, so..” Jess said.
The two girls start to go towards their car. Bella and I automatically head to go with them.
“Okay, well. Thank you.” Bella told Edward.
We starts to follow the girls then Edward abruptly spoke up stopping us.
“Maybe I should make sure they get something to eat. Since I made them left for dinner.” He had said. “And If you'd like. Then I could drive you back myself.”
“That's so... thoughtful.” Angela had said smiling at Bella.
“Really thoughtful.” Jessica agreed.
Bella debates, then decides. “I could eat. Kat?”
“I’m good. I’ll eat when I get home. I just want to go if that’s okay with you Edward?”
“No that’s fine.” He nods then he guides Bella off, the us girls share a look, and a noiseless scream of excitement came out of Angela and Jessica.
Bella hands me her bag to take the book with me. She must’ve read my mind because I was just about to ask her for it too.
An hour later, the girls dropped me off at the house. Charlie wasn’t home yet. Still. Which is a good thing too since Bella isn’t with me. As I got out and said goodbye to the girls, I ran inside the house and up to my room and start going through the book.
There were something’s I was still a little confused about so I went into Bella’s room and hopped on the computer and started looking up keywords from the book.
About an hour or two later I heard the front door open then heard Bella and Charlie talking. I walked down and heard them talking about what happened tonight.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked.
“Dad’s friend Waylon died tonight.” Bella said.
“What!? No, oh my god dad I’m so sorry.” I said as I went up to him and hugged him.
“Thanks kiddo. As I told your sister, try to stay out of the woods. He got attacked by an animal. This is Phoenix anymore girls, we have animals that can kill you.” Charlie said then hands me a canister of pepper spray. “I gave your sister one back at the station.”
“Okay.” I said.
“Well good night girls. I have a lot to do in the morning.” Charlie said as he went into the living room.
Both Bella and I went up to her room. Bella saw I was reading through the book and looking up stuff on the computer.
“Cold ones?” Bella said out loud.
“Yeah, I was looking that up when I heard you guys came in.” I told her.
She sat down and started helping me look up what I was doing. “Speed.” “Strength.” “Cold skinned.” “Immortal...” “Blood drinker.” So what Jake was telling us that the Cullens’ are these things? Like do we want to believe him?”
“He said it was just a story Bells. It ain’t real.” I said.
Hoping that it was just a story.
“Yeah, but it’s got me thinking though especially after tonight.”
“Bella you’re over thinking it. Go to bed, it’s late.” I said as I kissed her cheek then head off to my room.
That night it didn’t stop me having these crazy dreams. Bella was kinda right though. Edward came out of nowhere, like how did he know where we were. He never answered Bella when she asked. Unless he did when they were alone. But thinking about it, when I met the others, those who I touched their skin was cold. They have weird colored eye colors. They speak as they’re not from this time or from here. They don’t eat. They don’t come out in the sun. At least what Jessica said when the suns out they skip school.
In my dream, I was in the woods walking around when I saw wolves running around then I saw some of the Cullens telling me to run towards them. That they will keep me safe from the wolves. But what Jacob said that wolves are the protectors, so whom do I believe and go towards.
That was my question. What were the Cullens and were they safe to be around?
