Chapter 4 Substitute

1104 Words
Frederic's kisses were always dominant and forceful, giving Joey no chance to resist. He pressed her against the office desk, one hand holding her chin, the other tightly grasping her waist. The tender and sweet sensation gently caressed every nerve in Frederic's body, kindling a desire that was unyieldingly crashing against the confines of his inner cage, yearning to be set free. During his time with Joey, days were filled with harmony and intimacy. No matter what he desired, Joey complied without complaint, even when exhausted. However, the woman beneath him now was fiercely stubborn, struggling desperately as if fighting for her life. Tears of intense heat rolled down her cheeks. Frederic paused, his long and slender fingers tenderly brushing away the tears that lingered at the corners of Joey's eyes. "Joey, the game between us only ends when I say so. Do you understand?" Joey felt an immense sense of humiliation. She quickly adjusted her clothes and walked towards the door. Just as she opened it, she saw Scarlett standing there in a white dress, wearing an innocuous smile on her face. "Frederic, I brought you breakfast." This was the first time Joey had seen Scarlett up close. Their facial features indeed had some similarities, especially their eyes and nose. Joey's speculation was confirmed. She finally understood why Frederic still kept her around despite thinking she had an ulterior motive. As it turned out, she served as a substitute for Scarlett. In the three years of mutual support, she was merely a replacement. The realization left Joey feeling as if her heart were being sliced to pieces. She tried to calm herself down, nodded to Scarlett, and then left. As the office door closed, Frederic looked at Scarlett with an indifferent gaze. "Why are you here?" Scarlett's eyes instantly reddened. She lowered her head like a pitiful puppy. Sound like she was about to cry, she said, "Sorry, Frederic, I heard that you haven't been eating breakfast lately, and your stomach has been acting up. So, I came to bring you breakfast." Frederic furrowed his brows, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Just leave it there." Scarlett immediately brightened, rushing towards him, placing the pink lunchbox on the desk. "Frederic, I remember you love tuna and ham sandwiches. Try it. It's delicious," she said with a soft, sweet, and charming voice. However, looking at the delicate sandwich inside the pink box, Frederic only found himself having zero appetite. He pushed the lunchbox aside and said in a deep voice, "We're about to have a meeting. I will eat after that." Scarlett was disappointed, but she still nodded obediently. "Okay, then you go ahead with your work. I'll wait here for you and won't disturb you." "There's a reception room. You can wait there." After saying that, he called Scott through the intercom. "Take Ms. Palance to the reception room and have someone accompany her." Scott acted swiftly and appeared at the door in less than a minute. He gestured politely to Scarlett. "Ms. Palance, the meeting room next door is ready with refreshments. I'll have Lesly accompany you." Scarlett looked at Scott with sincere eyes. "I've heard that Ms. Renfro is a very nice person. I would like her to accompany me." "Sorry, Ms. Renfro is the chief secretary to the president and needs to attend the meeting as well." Scott was not a fool. Frederic had been at odds with Joey these days. If he let Scarlett stir up more trouble, Frederic and Joey probably would never be able to reconcile. Scarlett smiled faintly. "I see. I've heard she makes great coffee. Have her brew a cup for me." Frederic's handsome brows furrowed slightly; his eyes turned cold. Joey was his. Not anyone could use her as they pleased. But the thought of Joey insisting on leaving made him furious. It seemed he shouldn't spoil her too much. He said coldly, "Do as she said." Scott stared at Frederic in astonishment for a while, then sighed helplessly in his heart. Mr. Adamson, do you realize that having the incumbent work for the predecessor, you could lose Ms. Renfro? Powerless to say anything, Scott had no choice but to leave helplessly with Scarlett. Joey was sitting at her desk, organizing the files needed for the meeting, when Scott knocked on her office desk. "Ms. Renfro, Mr. Adamson wants you to bring Ms. Palance a cup of coffee to Reception Room 02." Joey looked up and replied indifferently, "Okay, coming right away." She went to the pantry after organizing the materials. Joey took the coffee beans out of the cabinet and ground them in the coffee machine. As she was preparing to brew, a petite figure appeared beside her. Her expression was indifferent. "Ms. Palance, the coffee will be ready in five minutes." A hint of coldness appeared on Scarlett's innocent and lovely face. "Ms. Renfro, don't you find it strange to see me?" Joey continued her actions without pause, focusing on her work with lowered brows and serious eyes. She said indifferently, "Countless women throw themselves at Mr. Adamson every day. There's nothing strange about that." "Don't you understand? The sole reason Frederic chose to be with you was because you look so much like me. He never liked you. He always considered you a substitute for me. Now that I'm back, it's time for you, the substitute, to leave." Joey poured boiling water into the coffee cup, and the aroma of the coffee filled the entire pantry. She took a pleasurable sniff and said with a smile, "Italian imported coffee beans, it tastes very good. Ms. Palance, how sweet would you like it?" Scarlett felt like she was punching cotton, and she clenched her fists in anger. "Joey, stop pretending. Aren't you with Frederic just for the money? Here's a check for ten million dollars. Please get away from him ASAP." Joey skillfully concealed her emotions as she nonchalantly dropped a sugar cube into her coffee. With practiced ease, she stirred it, unfazed by the world around her. "I heard you are not in good health. Keep this money for your medical expenses; otherwise, you might not live long enough to marry Frederic, and that would be a shame." She said in a nonchalant and indifferent tone. "Joey Renfro, you..." Scarlett clenched her teeth in anger as she realized Joey was more challenging than she anticipated. She fixed Joey with a fiery glare and, without hesitation, picked up the coffee from the table, throwing it in Joey's direction. The scalding coffee formed a beautiful arc in the air, hurtling towards Joey's face.
