‘Younger sister, how can you...’
The video that was being played on the lady's phone before Gillan stepped into the greenhouse was abruptly cut off.
Hearing Willa's words that drifted from the phone speaker, the contempt in the greenhouse thickened.
Gillian trembled, and her pale face became paler, understanding that the episode of her wedding had gone viral on social media.
Even though she was never at fault, nobody will pay a mind to an illegitimate daughter like her after all of Willa's schemes.
Gillian didn't even want to imagine how the netizens would trash her while hyping Willa on every social media platform!
Gillian clenched her fist upon hearing the beautiful lady's humiliating words.
Gillian had told the old maid to let her get a change of clothes because of an embarrassing situation like what had just happened.
However, the old maid ended up making fun of her and even going as far as scolding her before cruelly rejecting her.
Seeing the beautiful young lady in her twenties whose eyes currently held nothing but pure contempt for her, Gillian's eyes lowered slightly, recognizing the girl in a luxurious dress as Callista, Maverick's cousin.
Being the adorable princess in the family, Callista was widely known to be pampered by Augustus before the accident that dealt a blow to Augustus and turned him into a retard.
After that incident of Augustus, Calista was rumored to have received a deep shock, which she had never healed from.
It was rumored that the blow had switched Calista from being an adorable, innocent girl to a cold-hearted and indifferent person.
Gillian really finds Calista pitiful, but...
Upon recalling her own situation and Calista's status, a rueful smile appeared on her face, and she couldn't help but find herself more pitiful. What position does she have to find Calista pitiful?
Calista has everything a female could ever wish for: a great, wealthy, and supportive family like the Albrecht family, fans who love her, etc.
However, on Gillian's part, not only was she an illegitimate daughter of the Arison family who was scorned by all, she had her man snatched by her step-sister on her engagement day, became a substitute bride of a retard, and ended up being blamed by everyone.
The thought of how her well-thought-out life had turned into a joke in less than two days made her heart sting with pain.
Tears pooled in Gillian's eyes, and her lips quivered. Quickly, she lowered her head to hide her tears.
Gillian pinched her palm hard to snap out of the pain and muddled state, and she clutched her gown nervously.
“I. I'm sorry. While we were on our way, I told the maid I wanted a change of outfit, but she instructed us to keep going because the master and madam had been waiting for a while.” Gillian voiced out truthfully; her voice was raspy and shaky because of nervousness.
Calista’s brown eyes turned cold, and she stomped her feet on the floor immediately. “How could Head Maid Emma do this?” She retorted in disbelief and angrily stormed towards the dining table.
Sitting at the head of the dining chair was an old man in his seventies in a suit who was unconsciously exuding a majestic aura despite sitting quietly. His piercing black eyes were profound and filled with the natural calmness that comes with old age.
Next to the old man on the right side was a pretty woman with not-quite-outstanding features. She was dressed in an extravagant, luxurious brand from head to toe.
Calista immediately sat next to the old man on his left side, her face still wrinkled in a frown.
Renata’s eyes shone with a furious glint upon hearing Gillian's words, and her thick hands slapped the dining table fiercely. “How could Emma do such a thing? Call Emma in.” She bellowed authoritatively.
Despite all their actions, none of the Albrecht family members cast an eye on Gillian or ordered her to sit. It was as if she didn't exist in their eyes!
“Yes, Madam.” A maid suddenly stepped forward and bowed to Renata. As soon as she did so, she turned to leave the greenhouse.
‘Gillian, how can you be so shameless as to request your elder sister to kneel? Not only did you refuse to attend your sister's engagement because you fell in love with your brother-in-law, but now you want your elder sister to apologize to you because you carried an illegal touch!’
Immediately, Ivy's indignant voice drifted out of Calista's phone speaker into everyone's ears.
Immediately, the atmosphere in the greenhouse changed.
Gillian slightly shivered upon feeling six extremely cold eyes on her.
The Albrecht family didn't even bother to hide their contempt for Gillian. Including Augustus' grandpa, who had been calmly staring at her with his hawk eyes all along!
Even if the Albrecht family planned to stay nice to Gillian, with what Willa had done, all the good feelings the Albrecht family held for Gillian would dissipate into hatred immediately, which is what was currently happening!
Gillian didn't even want to imagine what the Albrecht family would do if they heard Ivy's next sentence. Gillian had a feeling that Calista might strangle her to death.
Gillian could only pray to heaven and whatever god was out there to please make them not listen to the next sentence.
Gillian clenched her dainty hands in petrification and nervousness. She finally realized that Willa didn't trash her all because of the netizens. Rather, it was because of this exact moment.
Willa doesn't want anyone, including the Albrecht family, to have a good feeling for Gillian. It was as if Willa's sole aim in life was to destroy Gillian.
Perhaps heaven listened to Gillian's words or Emma hadn't walked a long distance because, in less than four minutes, Emma was escorted into the greenhouse.
Gillian couldn't help but secretly exhale in relief when she saw Calista toss her phone on the table.
Renata's eyes flashed with intense anger after seeing the calm Emma. “Emma, you've been working in the Albrecht family all your life; do you need me to tell you dirt isn't allowed in the eating room?” She bellowed furiously, her slightly fat figure trembling due to indignation.
Gillian's heart stung at the dirt word, but she took a deep breath to stay composed.
A wicked glint flickered past Emma's old eyes, and with a heavy thud, she fell to her knees. “Madam. Young miss. Earlier on our way, I insisted on changing young Miss Gillian's dress, but she refused—”
Gillian's eyes widened, and her body shook in disbelief. She pointed at Emma and cried out. “You. You're lying!”
Emma's hands flew to her chest, and she gasped in feigned astonishment as if she couldn't believe that Gillian would deny it.
She clasped her hands together and bowed to Renata, Calista, and Augustus's grandpa respectfully. “Master, Madam, Miss. I have been an honest worker in the Albrecht family; why will I fail to do the right thing?” She cried out in her old voice, filled with grievances, and turned to Gillian with tears in her eyes. “Miss Gillian, both of us had no grudges with each other; how can you say such words and scheme at me? Are you trying to get me sacked?” She cried out and sniffed righteously. Secretly, Emma's lips curved slightly.
Of course, she worked for the Albrecht family as the head maid. Compared to Gillian, that dimwitted, illegitimate daughter who had just stepped into the mansion with scandal flooding her, Emma will be the one the Albrecht family will clearly support. And that was what Emma believed.
Tears pooled in Gillian's eyes, and she glared at Emma fiercely. She didn't believe that this old hag was someone who feared the strong and bullied the weak. Gillian has never met Emma before; why was Emma scheming at her? “You. You're shameless…”
“Miss Gillian, I knew if this ended up bad, you'd resort to making me take the blame. Luckily, two maids passed by us during our conversation. Madam and Master, if you want fairness, please let the maids testify.” Emma interrupted assuredly and slammed her forehead on the hard floor righteously.
Gillian's eyes lit up, and she nodded immediately. That's right. Two maids passed by Emma and Gillian when Emma was scolding Emma. They should let the maid in to testify!
“Call the two maids in.” Calista coldly proclaimed.
